Threads’ “Post failed to upload” message means the post did not finish publishing, but it does not reveal why. The cause may be a fluctuating connection, a particular photo or video, the app being interrupted, an account restriction, or a Threads-side problem. First check whether the post appeared on your profile, then save your draft before trying fixes. A short text-only post is the quickest way to narrow down the cause.
Start with these safe checks
- Check whether the post published. Open your profile before retrying. An upload may have reached Threads even if the app did not receive confirmation, and retrying could create a duplicate.
- Save the draft outside Threads. Copy the text to Notes or another editor, save attached media to your device, and take a screenshot if the failed composer may disappear. A failed draft may not be recoverable, and reinstalling or clearing app data can put local content at risk.
- Keep Threads open after tapping Post. Wait for the upload to finish before switching apps or locking your phone. Meta says photo and video posts require more time and local processing than text posts. On iOS, backgrounding Threads immediately after posting can leave the operating system only a few seconds to complete the upload (Meta Engineering).
- Switch networks. Try cellular instead of Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi instead of cellular. If you use a VPN, proxy, or restrictive network filter, temporarily test without it if you can do so safely. This is a diagnostic step, not a reason to leave security protections disabled.
- Try a short text-only post. Leave out links, photos, videos, GIFs, polls, and topic tags. If it publishes, add parts of the original post back one at a time to find the trigger.
- Try Threads.com. Sign in to the same account in a current browser and test a short post. Meta’s instructions confirm that Threads.com supports creating posts and attaching photos or videos (Meta Help Centre).
These checks are diagnostic, not guaranteed fixes. If a post failed after an app crash, reopen Threads and check your profile and drafts before recreating it.
Use the result to narrow down the cause
| What happens | What it suggests | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| Text publishes, but a post with media fails | The file, local media processing, permissions, or upload time may be involved. | Test one attachment at a time, then re-save or re-export the file that triggers the failure. |
| The app fails, but Threads.com works | The app’s local state, permissions, mobile network handling, or device-specific media processing may be involved. | Check permissions and updates; use the browser temporarily while troubleshooting the app. |
| Both app and Threads.com fail | A broader network issue, account restriction, session problem, or Threads-side failure is possible. | Try another network, check Account Status, and wait before repeated attempts. |
| New posts work, but replies fail | The problem may be specific to replies, that conversation, or the reply’s contents. | Try a shorter reply without media or links, reply to a different post, or test from Threads.com. |
| Only one file fails | That file or its processing is the main suspect. | Use a fresh local copy or re-save/re-export it, then try again. |
A feed that loads normally does not prove uploads will work: posting also requires outbound data transfer and, for media, additional processing. A failure across app and web is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove Threads is down. User reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal outage (example report).
Isolate a photo, video, or other post element
- Start with the saved text and no attachments. Test links, GIFs, polls, and topic tags separately rather than adding them all back at once.
- If text works, attach one image or video and try again. Add the remaining files individually so you can identify which item coincides with a failure.
- For an image that fails, open and re-save it in your device’s photo editor, or try another local copy.
- For a video that fails, export it again with a common mobile-friendly preset. If practical, try a shorter or smaller version.
- If your editor offers it, try removing unusual metadata. Avoid passing the file through multiple messaging apps first, since they may alter its quality or encoding.
Meta’s general upload guidance recommends a strong connection and troubleshooting the file, but it is not a Threads-specific specification (Facebook Help Center: Photos & Videos). Meta’s Threads posting instructions confirm that posts can include text, links, photos, videos, or combinations, but the cited page does not establish every current media limit (Meta Help Centre). Do not assume old third-party claims about fixed image counts, video duration, formats, caption length, or hashtags are current universal rules. If a file repeatedly fails, try a smaller or re-exported copy; the composer may reject a file without explaining which requirement it did not meet.

Check permissions and app state
On iPhone
Open Settings → Apps → Threads → Photos and confirm Threads can access the intended images; also check that cellular-data access is enabled if you are testing on mobile data. Menu labels can vary with iOS versions. After changing access, reopen Threads and try a fresh test post.
On Android
Open Settings → Apps → Threads → Permissions and allow the photo or video access needed for your post. The wording and location can vary by Android version and device manufacturer. Reopen Threads after changing permissions.

Update or restart only after saving your draft
- Force-close Threads, reopen it, and try a new minimal post.
- Install any available Threads update from your device’s app store, then restart the phone.
- On Android, clear the app cache if that option is available in the app settings.
- Reinstall only after copying the text and saving the media. Reinstallation may remove local drafts or unsent composer data, and it cannot resolve an account restriction or a Threads-side failure.
Check whether your account can post
An upload error alone does not prove that your account is banned or restricted. Meta’s Threads Account Status page can show removed content, recommendation restrictions, and features the account can no longer use; review options may be available in relevant cases. On Threads.com, open Menu → Settings → Account Status (Meta Help Centre). If it shows a restriction, follow the options displayed there. If it shows no issue, that does not rule out an app, network, or service problem.
When to stop retrying and report it
Pause rather than repeatedly tapping Retry if text and media fail across multiple networks or devices, Threads.com also fails, or the problem began suddenly after posting had been working. Check your profile before trying again in case a delayed upload completed. If the same issue persists, report it to Meta with enough detail to reproduce it:

Meta’s general upload help points users toward reporting unresolved problems (Facebook Help Center). If you publish through a third-party scheduler, test direct posting in Threads too: a scheduler or integration can have its own outage, separate from direct posting. Buffer, for example, has reported a partial incident affecting video publishing to Instagram and Threads (Buffer Status).
