Most Playwright installation failures on Windows come from using the wrong command for the project, skipping the browser-download step, or running installation and tests with different PowerShell, user, proxy, or cache settings. For .NET, build the project first and run the generated playwright.ps1 script from the output folder. For Node.js, use the project’s npx playwright CLI. Then match any download or missing-executable error to the remedy below.
First identify which Playwright project you have
Playwright has separate entry points for .NET and Node.js. The commands are not interchangeable: a .NET project gets a generated PowerShell script after building, while a Node project uses the Playwright package’s CLI.
| Project | Browser installation command | What must exist first |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright for .NET | pwsh bin/Debug/net8.0/playwright.ps1 install |
A Microsoft.Playwright package reference and a successful build |
| Playwright Test for Node.js | npx playwright install |
A Node project with the Playwright package installed |
If you are unsure, inspect the project files. A .csproj file indicates .NET; a package.json with Playwright dependencies indicates Node.js. Do not point a Node project at a .NET script path, and do not expect npx to create the .NET script.

net8.0with the framework folder that your build actually produced, such as the value shown underbinDebug. If you built in Release mode, use the corresponding Release path.
The package and the browser binaries are separate. A successful dotnet add package or dotnet build does not prove that Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit is present.
Install only one browser when appropriate
The generated script accepts a browser name, so you can reduce the download when your tests target one engine:

Install Playwright Test for Node.js
Run the CLI from the Node project directory. The usual command installs the browser versions required by the installed Playwright package:
npx playwright install
To install a particular browser, name it explicitly:
npx playwright install chromium
The Node CLI also supports browser-install controls such as --force and --dry-run. Use the CLI reference for the exact option spelling for the version in your project: Playwright command line. A .NET script path such as bin/Debug/net8.0/playwright.ps1 is not a Node installation method.
When PowerShell says pwsh is not recognized
This failure happens before Playwright attempts a browser download. It means the PowerShell executable named pwsh is unavailable or cannot be resolved in the current process. Install or update PowerShell, open a new terminal so the command is on PATH, and retry the same generated-script command. Do not troubleshoot proxies, certificates, or browser archives until pwsh itself runs.
Also verify that you are in the project directory and that the script path exists. A TypeNotFound-style message from the documented .NET workflow points to the PowerShell tool or invocation rather than to a missing Chromium executable. The .NET getting-started instructions describe this generated-script requirement: Playwright .NET library getting started.

Separate package, browser download, and runtime discovery
Package or build failure
- Symptom:
dotnet add packageordotnet buildfails. Action: fix the .NET project or package restore first; no Playwright script is available until the build succeeds. - Symptom: the script path does not exist. Action: inspect the framework directory generated under
binDebugorbinRelease, then substitute that directory in the command. - Symptom:
npx playwrightis unavailable. Action: run it from the Node project containing the Playwright dependency and complete package installation before attempting browser installation.
Browser download failure
If the package and script run but an archive cannot be downloaded, use the error’s symptom to choose a network remedy. Playwright downloads browser archives from Microsoft’s CDN by default. The browser documentation covers these variables and host settings: Playwright .NET browsers.
Missing executable at test runtime
Errors saying that a browser executable does not exist usually mean the required browser was never installed, the package was upgraded without refreshing browsers, or the test process is looking in a different cache. Run the matching install command again after updating Playwright. Releases can require newer browser revisions, so keeping only the package current is not enough.

Fix proxy, certificate, and timeout errors
Corporate or authenticated proxy
Set the proxy for the current PowerShell process before invoking the install script:
$Env:HTTPS_PROXY = "https://proxy.example:8080"
pwsh bin/Debug/net8.0/playwright.ps1 install
Use the proxy format and credentials required by your organization. This setting affects the process in which the command runs; opening a different terminal without the variable will not inherit it.
TLS inspection and a self-signed certificate chain
If the error contains self signed certificate in certificate chain, a TLS-inspecting proxy may be replacing the server certificate. Point Node’s certificate handling at the organization’s trusted root certificate before installation:

$Env:NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS = "C:certsorg-root.pem"
pwsh bin/Debug/net8.0/playwright.ps1 install
Use a PEM file supplied and approved by your organization. A proxy setting alone does not repair an untrusted inspection certificate.
Slow or stalled connections
For a connection that is valid but too slow, increase the download connection timeout in milliseconds:
$Env:PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT = "120000"
pwsh bin/Debug/net8.0/playwright.ps1 install
Do not use a longer timeout to conceal a certificate or access-policy failure; select the variable that matches the reported error.
Internal mirrors and custom hosts
Playwright supports custom download hosts, including per-browser host settings. That is generally an organization’s artifact-mirror decision. An individual developer should first confirm the proxy, certificate trust, and timeout conditions before changing download hosts. The browser documentation lists the supported host variables.
Check the browser cache and account identity
On Windows, the default browser cache is:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalms-playwright
Installation and test execution must agree on the cache. If PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH was set while installing, set it to the same location when running tests. A common failure pattern is installing as one Windows account and executing tests as another, or setting a custom path in one terminal but not the other.

- Confirm the current Windows user with the account that owns the cache.
- Check whether
PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATHis set in the install and test processes. - Run the generated script’s browser-list operation to inspect what Playwright sees before deleting anything.
- After a Playwright upgrade, reinstall browsers so the cache matches the package revision.
Deleting the entire cache should not be the opening move. It removes useful evidence and may force large downloads without fixing a path or account mismatch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify Windows and framework support
Playwright .NET documents Windows 11 or later and Windows Server 2019 or later, with .NET 8 recommended. If the machine or target framework is outside those requirements, resolve that support mismatch before experimenting with cache or network workarounds. See the setup requirements at Playwright .NET installation.
For Windows CI agents, the .NET CI guidance says no additional Windows-specific configuration is required beyond installing Playwright and running the tests. If CI works while a developer workstation fails, compare the local shell, account, proxy, certificate, and cache variables rather than assuming Windows itself is unsupported: Playwright .NET CI and Playwright .NET CI setup.
A symptom-to-remedy checklist
| Observed message or behavior | Likely stage | Next action |
|---|---|---|
pwsh is not recognized |
Shell resolution | Install or update PowerShell, reopen the terminal, and rerun the .NET script. |
playwright.ps1 is missing |
Build or path | Run dotnet build and use the framework directory actually generated. |
| Browser executable does not exist | Browser installation or cache | Run the matching install command, then compare cache paths and Windows accounts. |
| Download blocked by proxy | Network access | Set HTTPS_PROXY in the installation process. |
self signed certificate in certificate chain |
TLS trust | Set NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS to the approved organization root certificate. |
| Connection stalls or times out | Slow network | Increase PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT. |
| Failure only after upgrading Playwright | Package/cache mismatch | Re-run browser installation for the upgraded package. |
Keep installation predictable in CI
Use the same package version and browser-install command in the CI job that runs the tests. Avoid relying on a browser cache created by an unrelated user or machine. If you override PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH, define it consistently in both the installation and test steps. A clean CI failure should identify whether the problem is package restore, shell invocation, browser download, or executable discovery; preserve that stage in logs instead of immediately deleting caches.

If your goal is simply to obtain a website image or PDF rather than run browser automation, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing result.
Use the documented API examples at ScreenshotNeo documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its features include full-page and selector captures, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Every feature is available on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, with yearly billing providing two months free.
