If Playwright reports a missing browser executable, install the browser binaries for the same Playwright version your project uses. On Linux, include the operating-system dependencies; behind a proxy, configure the proxy and trusted certificate before downloading. The steps below cover Node.js, Python, Java, .NET, local machines, CI and Docker.
Why Playwright installation fails
Playwright has two parts that are easy to mistake for one: the language package and the browser binaries it launches. Installing or updating the package does not guarantee that the matching browsers are installed. Each Playwright release expects specific browser revisions, so a package update can leave an older browser cache behind. Microsoft’s Playwright documentation states, “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.”
Start by identifying which part is missing. A missing executable usually points to absent or mismatched browser binaries. A browser that is present but will not start on a fresh Linux machine may need operating-system libraries. A failed or stalled download points instead to network access, proxy, certificate, or timeout configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Local workstation: reinstall the browsers for the installed package version.
- Linux server or CI: install browsers and their operating-system dependencies before running tests.
- Corporate network: configure proxy and certificate trust, then retry the browser download.
- Container or shared runner: check that the test process can see the browser cache it was installed into.
Install the browser binaries for your language
Run the installer from the project environment that will run the tests. This helps ensure that the browser revisions correspond to the package actually in use. If you only need one browser, install that browser rather than every supported browser.

Node.js
# Install the project's dependencies first, then install Playwright browsers
npm install
npx playwright install
# Or install Chromium only
npx playwright install chromium
# See which Playwright browsers are installed
npx playwright install --list
If you updated the Playwright package, run the browser installer again. If the install command succeeds but the test still reports a missing executable, confirm that the package manager command is being run in the same project and environment as the test.
Python
# Run in the Python environment used by the project
python -m playwright install
# Or install Chromium only
python -m playwright install chromium
The Playwright package and its browser downloads need to be available to the Python environment that runs your tests. If you use a virtual environment, activate it before installing the package and browsers.
Java and .NET
For Java, use the Playwright CLI provided by the Maven setup for the project to install browsers. For .NET, run the generated playwright.ps1 install script after building the project. In both cases, use the project’s installed Playwright version and run the browser-install step in the same environment that will execute the tests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Install Linux operating-system dependencies
On a fresh Linux machine or CI runner, browser binaries alone may not be enough: Playwright also needs system libraries. Install them alongside a browser, or use the dedicated dependency installer.
Node.js
# Install Chromium and its Linux dependencies
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
# Or install Linux dependencies separately
npx playwright install-deps
Python
# Install browser dependencies and Chromium
python -m playwright install --with-deps chromium
# Or install Linux dependencies separately
python -m playwright install-deps
For Java and .NET, use the equivalent install-with-dependencies or dependency-install option exposed by the Playwright CLI for that project. Choose this route when the Linux image or runner does not already provide the required libraries.
When installing Linux dependencies through a proxy, run the dependency command as root. The package-manager proxy settings may not otherwise be preserved. Browser downloads and operating-system package downloads are separate operations, so a working browser download does not prove that the system package manager can reach its repositories.

Fix downloads behind a proxy or TLS inspection
By default, Playwright downloads browser archives from Microsoft’s CDN. A corporate network may require an HTTPS proxy or inspect TLS traffic with an organization-issued certificate. Configure the environment before running the install command.

Set the HTTPS proxy
# Linux or macOS shell example; substitute your organization's proxy address
export HTTPS_PROXY=http://proxy.example:8080
npx playwright install
Use the proxy address and authentication method supplied by your organization; do not put proxy credentials into a script or repository that other people can read. The same environment variable should be set for the shell or CI step that performs the download.
Trust the corporate root certificate in Node.js
# Use the actual path to the organization's trusted root certificate
export NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS=/path/to/corporate-root.pem
npx playwright install
If the error says “self signed certificate in certificate chain,” TLS inspection may be presenting a certificate Node.js does not trust. Ask your IT team for the approved root certificate and use its real path. Do not disable certificate verification as a workaround.
Increase the download connection timeout
# Example: allow up to 120 seconds for a download connection
export PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT=120000
npx playwright install
The timeout value is in milliseconds. Increase it when downloads are slow or stall on a constrained connection; it does not correct a blocked CDN, incorrect proxy, or untrusted certificate.
Make CI and Docker installs reproducible
Install the project dependencies, then install the matching Playwright browsers and Linux dependencies, and only then run the tests. Browser files installed in one job or container layer are not automatically available to a different environment. Microsoft’s CI guidance recommends using its Docker image on Linux agents or installing dependencies with the CLI.

Example: JavaScript CI steps
npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
npx playwright test
This example installs Chromium only. If your tests use other Playwright browsers, install those too. Keep the install step after the project dependency step so the browser installer is associated with the package version resolved for the project.
Other language bindings
- Python: install the project’s Python dependencies, run
python -m playwright install --with-deps chromium, then run the test command used by the project. - Java: install the project dependencies, run the Playwright Maven CLI browser installation with dependencies, then run the project’s test task.
- .NET: restore and build the project, run its generated
playwright.ps1 installscript with the required browser and Linux dependencies, then run tests.
For Linux agents, the Playwright Docker image is an alternative when you want the browser runtime and Linux dependencies provided together. Keep the image and the Playwright package version aligned; a preinstalled runtime does not remove the need to use compatible browser revisions.
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a website screenshot—not browser automation, interaction testing or control of a local browser—you can use ScreenshotNeo’s screenshot API instead of installing Playwright. One GET request takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
In plain terms: ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed; an MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools; and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Each response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
ScreenshotNeo is not a fix for a Playwright test suite that needs to click, inspect, or otherwise automate a browser. For screenshot capture by URL, it can avoid maintaining the browser installation yourself. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Control where Playwright stores browsers
When installation succeeds but a later test cannot find the browser, check whether the install and test processes use the same browser storage path. By default, Playwright uses its browser cache. Set PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH to share a specific browser directory, or set it to 0 for a hermetic install under the project package directory.
# Use a shared browser cache path (choose a path available to install and test processes)
export PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH=/path/to/shared/playwright-browsers
npx playwright install chromium
npx playwright test
# Or use a hermetic project-local install
export PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH=0
npx playwright install chromium
npx playwright test
Set the variable for both installation and execution. In CI, also make sure the path is preserved across jobs or container boundaries if one job installs browsers and another runs tests. Otherwise, install and test in the same job or environment.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Troubleshoot by error symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Browser executable doesn’t exist” or missing executable | Browser binaries are absent, installed for a different Playwright version, or stored in a different path. | Run the browser installer for the project’s current Playwright package; inspect Node.js installations with npx playwright install --list; verify the install and test processes share the same PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH. |
| Browser download cannot connect | Direct access to Microsoft’s CDN is blocked or a corporate proxy is required. | Set HTTPS_PROXY in the environment running the installer and retry. |
| “Self signed certificate in certificate chain” | TLS inspection or another certificate chain is not trusted by Node.js. | Use the approved organization root certificate with NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS; do not disable certificate checks. |
| Download stalls or times out | The connection is slow or the network is interrupting large downloads. | Increase PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT; if it still fails, verify proxy and CDN access. |
| Browser is installed but fails to launch on Linux | Required operating-system libraries are missing. | Run npx playwright install --with-deps chromium or npx playwright install-deps; for Python, use python -m playwright install --with-deps chromium or python -m playwright install-deps. |
| Dependency installation fails behind a Linux proxy | The OS package-manager step does not have the proxy configuration or privileges it needs. | Run the dependency installation as root and ensure the package manager can use the organization’s proxy. |
| Works locally but fails in CI or Docker | The runner/container lacks browsers or system libraries, or the installed cache is not available where tests run. | Install browsers and dependencies before tests in the same environment, use a consistent browser path, or use the Playwright Docker image on Linux. |
Choose the right installation strategy
| Situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Local development; default network access | Install the project package, then run its browser installer; install only the browser your tests need. |
| Fresh Linux host or CI runner | Install browsers with operating-system dependencies using --with-deps, or install dependencies separately. |
| Corporate proxy or TLS inspection | Configure HTTPS_PROXY; add the organization’s trusted certificate with NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS when needed; increase the download timeout only for slow connections. |
| Several processes need one browser cache | Set a shared PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH available to both installation and test processes. |
| Project-contained browser installation | Set PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH=0 for a hermetic project-local install. |
| Linux Docker environment | Use the Playwright Docker image for the browser runtime and Linux dependencies, or install those requirements in the image before tests. |
There is no published failure-rate statistic in the cited Playwright documentation, so an installation error should be diagnosed from its symptom rather than assumed to have a single common cause.
