For a standalone Playwright API test, configure the proxy on the APIRequestContext created with request.newContext(); increasing its timeout only makes the test wait longer and does not route traffic through the proxy. First identify whether the failing operation is an API request, a browser page request, or a browser download: each has a different configuration surface.
First identify which Playwright operation is timing out
“Playwright timed out” is not enough to identify the cause. A standalone API call, a request made by a browser page, and playwright install downloading a browser do not share one proxy setting. Configure the path that actually sends the failing request.
| Failing operation | Where to configure the proxy | Timeout setting to investigate |
|---|---|---|
Standalone API call through APIRequestContext |
The proxy option passed to request.newContext() |
The context’s API request timeout |
| Request made from a page or browser context | Browser launch or browser-context proxy configuration | The relevant page or browser operation’s timeout |
| Browser archive download during installation | Download environment configuration, including HTTPS_PROXY |
PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT |
The settings are documented separately by Microsoft Playwright’s APIRequestContext documentation, its HTTP proxy guidance, the Browser API, and the browser installation guide. These URLs reflect the official documentation reviewed on September 29, 2026; check the docs for the Playwright version in your project because APIs and behavior can change.

Configure a proxy for a standalone API test
For an API request, pass the approved proxy server and any required proxy credentials to the context that issues the call. The example uses TypeScript and @playwright/test. The proxy environment variable names are your own conventions; Playwright does not require those names. Supply the scheme and host:port your organization approves, and do not commit secrets.

import { request } from '@playwright/test';
const api = await request.newContext({
baseURL: 'https://api.example.test',
proxy: {
server: process.env.CORPORATE_PROXY!, // approved scheme and host:port
bypass: process.env.PROXY_BYPASS, // optional comma-separated domains
username: process.env.PROXY_USER, // only if required
password: process.env.PROXY_PASSWORD, // only if required
},
timeout: 45_000, // illustrative; choose for your API and CI budget
});
try {
const response = await api.get('/health');
// Assert the status and response body expected by your API.
} finally {
await api.dispose();
}
For the documented option names and accepted proxy configuration, see the APIRequest.newContext() reference. If the test does not use a base URL, request an absolute URL instead. Adapt the health endpoint and assertions to the service under test.
Set only the fields your network requires
server: the HTTP or SOCKS proxy server. Confirm the correct scheme, hostname, and port with your network team; a guessed scheme or endpoint can prevent a connection.bypass: optional comma-separated domains that should connect directly instead of through the proxy. Check whether the failing API host matches an entry; a bypass match can send that destination down the wrong route.usernameandpassword: optional proxy credentials, separate from the API’s own credentials. Keep them in the CI secret store or another approved secret mechanism.timeout: the maximum wait for an API request in milliseconds. The documented default is 30,000 ms (30 seconds);0disables the timeout. A finite, measured increase can help diagnose or accommodate a slow API, but it does not configure proxy routing.
A 45-second timeout in the sample is an illustrative choice, not a Playwright recommendation. Set an explicit limit based on the API’s expected response time and the test job’s budget. Disabling the timeout is generally a poor CI fix because a stalled request can then wait without that guard.
Distinguish proxy routing, authentication, and TLS trust
Capture the failing URL, HTTP method, elapsed time, full error text and code, and any proxy response or status information exposed by your environment. A timeout alone cannot establish whether the problem is routing, proxy authentication, certificate inspection, DNS, a firewall rule, server latency, or another condition.

Check proxy routing and bypass rules
Verify the proxy hostname, port, and scheme with the network administrator, then compare the target API host with the configured bypass list. If the destination should use the proxy but matches a bypass entry, remove or narrow that entry according to your organization’s policy. If it should bypass, confirm the required domain pattern rather than assuming a broad rule behaves as intended.
Keep proxy credentials separate from API credentials
Proxy username and password authenticate to the proxy. API authorization headers, tokens, or HTTP credentials authenticate to the service. One does not replace the other. Ask the network team whether this proxy requires credentials and which authentication arrangement the approved endpoint supports; do not put an API token into proxy fields.
Treat certificate errors as trust failures
If the failure reports an untrusted certificate chain, investigate the corporate TLS inspection setup and the trust configuration of the Node.js process running the test. Obtain the approved root certificate and follow your organization’s instructions for that runtime. Playwright’s browser installation guide advises using NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS when intercepted proxy requests to the browser archive fail because of an untrusted custom CA. That is specifically browser-download guidance, not a complete recipe for every API request or Node.js deployment.

Browser-page traffic uses a different proxy configuration
If the failing request originates from a page rather than a standalone API context, configure the browser globally or the browser context, as appropriate. Playwright’s browser proxy options also support credentials and hosts to bypass. The request surface matters: a proxy attached to an API request context is not a substitute for browser configuration, and a browser proxy setting is not the APIRequestContext option.
Use the relevant Playwright HTTP proxy guidance and Browser API reference for the browser setup supported by your version. In a test that creates both a page and an API context, determine which one issued the request that failed before changing configuration.
Browser installation timeouts are not API test timeouts
If the error occurs while installing Playwright browsers, the request is downloading a browser archive, not calling your test API. The browser installation documentation describes HTTPS_PROXY for download traffic. For slow connections to the browser archive it gives PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT=120000 as an example, in milliseconds. These settings concern installation and should not be presented as a way to route or extend an APIRequestContext request.

For an intercepted archive download that fails on an untrusted custom CA, follow the installation guide’s NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS advice with the approved corporate certificate. Confirm the diagnosis from the installation error before changing trust settings; do not weaken certificate verification as a workaround.
Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the sender. Establish whether the failing operation is a standalone API context, browser page, or browser installation download.
- Preserve the evidence. Record URL, method, elapsed time, error text/code, and any proxy response details. Avoid diagnosing by the word “timeout” alone.
- Check the relevant configuration surface. For a standalone API context, inspect the
proxypassed torequest.newContext(); for pages, inspect browser proxy configuration; for archive downloads, inspect installation proxy settings. - Confirm endpoint and credentials. Validate approved scheme, host, port, proxy authentication requirements, and bypass list with the network owner. Do not conflate proxy authentication with service authentication.
- Resolve certificate errors on their own terms. If logs show a trust-chain problem, confirm the corporate CA and which process must trust it. Use the browser-download advice only for that documented download path.
- Adjust timeout only after routing is understood. If the path is correct and the API is genuinely slow, use a finite timeout that fits the service behavior and CI budget; the default API request timeout is 30 seconds.
- Reproduce in the same environment. Run from the same CI worker, container, or machine as the failure. Proxy variables, certificates, DNS access, and egress policy can differ by environment.
Common symptoms and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| API call waits about 30 seconds and fails | Default API request timeout, or a path that cannot reach the service | Check proxy routing and logs first; increase the finite timeout only if the service is expected to take longer. |
| Proxy returns an authentication error | Proxy credentials or the organization’s proxy authentication policy | Confirm whether credentials are required and use the proxy fields for proxy authentication, not API credentials. |
| Certificate-chain or untrusted CA error | TLS interception and process trust configuration | Obtain the approved corporate CA and configure the process that makes the request; do not treat this as a timeout setting. |
| Only one destination fails | Bypass matching, destination-specific network policy, DNS, or API behavior | Compare the host with bypass rules and ask the network or service owner to check the destination path. |
| Browser installs fail, but test API calls work | Browser archive download proxy or archive connection timeout | Use the installation-specific HTTPS_PROXY, PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT, or CA guidance where applicable. |
| Works locally but fails in CI | Different proxy variables, credentials, certificates, DNS, or egress policy | Compare approved network configuration and repeat diagnosis in the exact CI execution environment. |

FAQ
Does a timeout prove the corporate proxy is the cause?
No. A timeout can result from routing, DNS, firewall policy, service latency, or other failures. Use the error details and the exact request path to narrow it down.
