Android Picture-in-Picture (PiP) usually fails for one of four reasons: the app’s Android permission is off, the app has its own PiP setting disabled, the video or activity is not eligible, or the app has a bug. Start here: Settings → Apps → Special app access → Picture-in-picture → select the app → turn on Allow picture-in-picture.
That permission alone cannot force PiP in every app. Android supports PiP from Android 8.0 (API level 26), but each app must implement it and may restrict particular content.
First, test PiP correctly
- Open an app that supports PiP.
- Start an eligible video, video call, navigation session, or other supported activity.
- Keep it actively playing. Do not pause or stop the video first.
- Press the Home button or swipe up using gesture navigation. Do not press Back.
- Wait briefly for the floating window to appear. If the player has a PiP button, you can tap it before leaving.
The Android PiP window should float above other apps, move when dragged, expand when tapped, and close with its X control or by dragging it off the bottom of the screen. If swiping up simply closes the app, Google notes that the particular app may not support PiP.

Turn on Android’s PiP permission
On most current Android phones and tablets, open:
Settings → Apps → Special app access → Picture-in-picture → affected app → Allow picture-in-picture
On older Android versions, the path may be:
Settings → Apps & notifications → Advanced → Special app access → Picture-in-picture → affected app → Allow picture-in-picture
Menu names vary between Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo and other devices. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for picture-in-picture or PiP. You can also open the affected app’s App info screen and look for a PiP-related permission.

Do not substitute Appear on top, Draw over other apps or Display over other apps. Those are general overlay permissions, not the normal Android PiP permission. Samsung documents them separately for features such as chat bubbles and other floating overlays.
Check the app’s own PiP setting

YouTube requires its own setting as well as Android’s app-level permission:

YouTube → profile picture → Settings → Playback → Picture-in-Picture → On
Then verify the Android permission under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Picture-in-picture → YouTube. Start an eligible video and leave YouTube with Home or a swipe up.

YouTube’s availability rules vary by country, account and content. YouTube identifies some music content—including official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs and user-generated song covers—as restricted for PiP unless the account has the relevant Premium eligibility. That does not mean YouTube Premium is a general repair for broken PiP: it cannot fix a disabled Android permission, an app bug or a service outage.
YouTube TV
YouTube TV has a separate control. Open YouTube TV → Settings → Picture in Picture, enable it, then test while a supported programme is playing.
Netflix and other apps
Netflix warns that device support and app settings can limit PiP even when the Android version appears compatible. Other video, calling and navigation apps make their own implementation and eligibility decisions. Android cannot add PiP to an app that does not support it.

Update, force-stop and restart
Use these low-risk fixes in order:
- Update the affected app through Google Play.
- Install any available Android or system software update.
- Open Settings → Apps → affected app, tap Force stop, then reopen the app.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Repeat the controlled PiP test with an actively playing, eligible video.
Updates and restarts can remove stale app state and install fixes, but they will not make unsupported content eligible or necessarily resolve a server-side problem.
Clear the app cache—but not its data first
If PiP is still missing or the window is blank, try:
Settings → Apps → affected app → Storage & cache → Clear cache
The exact labels vary. Clearing cache removes temporary files and is usually low risk. Do not tap Clear storage or Clear data as a first step. That can sign you out, erase preferences and remove locally stored downloads. Use it only after confirming that you know the account credentials and have tried cache clearing, updating and restarting.
Use another app to identify the cause

Fix a blank, frozen or disappearing PiP window
- Tap the PiP window and return to the app.
- Stop the current video or activity and start it again.
- Try a different video or activity.
- Force-stop and relaunch the app.
- Clear the app cache.
- Update the app and restart the device.
If playback stops only after the app is backgrounded, open Settings → Apps → affected app → Battery and review the device’s background restrictions. Battery optimization can affect playback continuation on some manufacturers, but setting every app to Unrestricted is not a standard PiP requirement and may reduce battery life.

Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and other Android differences
Pixel
Newer Pixel software generally uses Settings → Apps → Special app access → Picture-in-picture. Older Pixel instructions may show Settings → Apps & notifications → Advanced → Special app access → Picture-in-picture.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s One UI can use different labels depending on the model and software version. Samsung’s pop-up view is not the same as Android PiP: pop-up view makes an app window movable, while PiP shrinks a supported video, call or navigation activity into a small window. Use the Android PiP permission and the app’s own setting for video PiP.
Other manufacturers
Motorola and other manufacturers also warn that not all apps support PiP. Android version 8.0 or newer is only the platform prerequisite; manufacturer software and app compatibility still determine the result.

Chat bubbles, screen filters, floating toolbars, screen recorders, accessibility tools and automation apps can sometimes interfere with windows or touch input. Temporarily disable a suspicious overlay only if you see permission errors, a blocked or hidden window, touch problems or another floating element covering PiP.
Do not disable every overlay by default, and do not treat Appear on top as the normal PiP fix. It is a separate permission.

Before you reset the phone, check for an app bug
A correct configuration does not rule out a service-side failure. In July 2026, reports described a widespread YouTube PiP problem affecting Android and iOS users, with Google investigating. Reporting indicated that both free and Premium users were affected. This is why buying Premium should not be presented as a general troubleshooting step.
If PiP suddenly stopped after an app update and other users report the same behavior:
- Test another PiP-capable app.
- Check the app’s official help or community channels for an incident.
- Submit feedback from the affected app.
- Install an update when one becomes available.
- Avoid a factory reset unless the manufacturer confirms a broader device problem.
When reporting the fault, include the device model, Android version, manufacturer software version, app and app version, video or activity type, account or subscription status where relevant, whether another app works, and whether PiP is absent, black, frozen or immediately closes.

If the problem is isolated to one app, uninstalling and reinstalling it can repair corrupted local state, but it may remove downloads and reset preferences. Back up anything important first.
For a failure across multiple supported apps, contact the device manufacturer after checking permissions, updates, restarts and overlays. A factory reset is an extreme measure: back up the device, confirm that the fault is not app-specific or service-wide, and use manufacturer support before considering it.
PiP, split screen and pop-up view are different
- Picture-in-Picture: A supported activity, usually video, a call or navigation, shrinks into a small floating window.
- Split screen: Two apps share the display.
- Samsung pop-up view: An entire app becomes a movable floating window.
If you want a floating app rather than a small video player, PiP is not the feature you need.
