If a PhantomJS page is blank or Selenium times out, debug the PhantomJS page load separately from the WebDriver session. Open the URL with a minimal PhantomJS script, log resource and JavaScript errors, then classify the failure as TLS/certificates, proxy or network policy, unsupported JavaScript, a resource timeout, or Selenium synchronization. PhantomJS 2.1.1 is no longer a supported Selenium browser integration, so use the diagnosis to move tests to headless Chrome or Firefox.
Start by separating the two failure layers
A Selenium timeout does not prove that the server failed to return a page. PhantomJS may have received an HTTP response while scripts were still rendering, rejected a certificate, failed one critical resource, or stopped on JavaScript that its old WebKit engine cannot execute. Conversely, PhantomJS may load the URL correctly while the Selenium session, driver, proxy, or wait condition is wrong.
- Record the environment. Run
phantomjs --version. Record the Selenium language binding and driver versions, the browser binary path, operating system, proxy variables, and the exact URL. Make sure only one PhantomJS binary is being invoked; multiple installations can cause you to debug a different version than the one Selenium starts. - Test the endpoint without Selenium. Use the script below and inspect its status and logs.
- Classify the result. An HTTPS-only failure points to TLS or trust; failed transfers point to DNS, proxy, firewall, or a blocked resource; JavaScript errors point to compatibility or application code; a successful load followed by an empty DOM points to asynchronous rendering or an application exception.
- Only then inspect Selenium. Verify that the driver can create a session and that your wait targets a real application condition rather than a fixed delay.
Reproduce the URL directly in PhantomJS
Save this as diagnose.js and run phantomjs diagnose.js https://example.com. It reports the final page status, every resource error and timeout, and JavaScript exceptions. The callback always calls phantom.exit(), so a failed request does not leave a hung process.
var system = require('system');
var webpage = require('webpage');
if (system.args.length < 2) {
console.log('Usage: phantomjs diagnose.js https://example.com');
phantom.exit(1);
}
var url = system.args[1];
var page = webpage.create();
page.settings.javascriptEnabled = true;
page.settings.resourceTimeout = 30000;
page.settings.userAgent = 'Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; PhantomJS diagnostic)';
page.onResourceRequested = function (request) {
console.log('REQUEST ' + request.id + ' ' + request.url);
};
page.onResourceError = function (error) {
console.log('RESOURCE_ERROR ' + error.errorCode + ': ' + error.errorString + ' ' + error.url);
};
page.onResourceTimeout = function (request) {
console.log('RESOURCE_TIMEOUT ' + request.errorCode + ' ' + request.url);
};
page.onError = function (message, trace) {
console.log('JS_ERROR ' + message);
trace.forEach(function (frame) {
console.log(' at ' + frame.file + ':' + frame.line + (frame.function ? ' in ' + frame.function : ''));
});
};
page.open(url, function (status) {
console.log('PAGE_STATUS ' + status);
console.log('FINAL_URL ' + page.url);
console.log('TITLE ' + page.title);
console.log('HTML_BYTES ' + page.content.length);
phantom.exit(status === 'success' ? 0 : 2);
});
success means PhantomJS completed its page-open operation, not that a single-page application finished rendering. Check the logged URL, title, HTML size, and errors. If the title and HTML are present but the application container is empty, the browser probably reached the site and then failed during client-side execution.

Capture the DOM after application rendering
For pages that render asynchronously, add a short polling loop instead of assuming that page.open is the final state. Replace #app with a selector that only appears when your application is usable:
var deadline = Date.now() + 20000;
var timer = window.setInterval(function () {
var ready = page.evaluate(function () {
return !!document.querySelector('#app .ready');
});
if (ready || Date.now() > deadline) {
window.clearInterval(timer);
console.log('READY_SELECTOR ' + ready);
console.log(page.content);
phantom.exit(ready ? 0 : 3);
}
}, 250);
Run this polling code after page.open invokes its callback. A fixed delay can be useful as a temporary diagnostic, but a DOM condition is more reliable because network and rendering times vary.
Fix HTTPS and certificate failures
If the same URL works over HTTP but not HTTPS, inspect the OpenSSL/TLS libraries used by your PhantomJS build, the certificate chain presented by the server, the selected protocol, and any private certificate authority required by your network. PhantomJS exposes these command-line controls:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
--ssl-protocol=<protocol>selects the TLS protocol behavior supported by the build.--ssl-certificates-path=<directory>points PhantomJS at trusted certificate files.--ignore-ssl-errors=truesuppresses certificate validation.
Use --ignore-ssl-errors=true only to prove that trust validation is the blocker. It does not repair the certificate chain and should not be used as a production security setting. The durable fix is a PhantomJS build with compatible TLS support or a correct CA path. Also check whether a corporate proxy is replacing certificates; in that case, install the organization’s CA in the trust location rather than disabling validation.
Check proxy, DNS, and outbound policy
Before changing browser code, test the same hostname from the machine running PhantomJS. Confirm DNS resolution, firewall egress, proxy authentication, and access to third-party assets such as scripts, fonts, and API endpoints. PhantomJS documents a Windows default-proxy latency problem; try --proxy-type=none when the machine should connect directly. If a proxy is required, configure its host, port, and credentials explicitly instead of silently inheriting an unusable system setting.

A page can appear blank when its main document loads but a JavaScript bundle or API request is blocked. The onResourceError and onResourceTimeout callbacks identify that distinction. Fix the blocked dependency or network rule rather than increasing Selenium’s page timeout indefinitely.
Verify PhantomJS page settings
Inspect settings before calling page.open; the settings reference applies them during that initial navigation. Confirm that:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorspage.settings.javascriptEnabledis true for application pages that require scripts.userAgentis acceptable to the site and does not trigger an incompatible legacy response.webSecurityEnabledandlocalToRemoteUrlAccessEnabledmatch the cross-origin behavior your test needs. Relaxing browser security can hide an application defect, so change these only for a controlled diagnostic.resourceTimeoutis long enough for the slowest required resource but finite enough to expose a dead endpoint.
Changing settings after navigation starts will not reliably alter the initial load. Set them first, then call page.open.
Fix Selenium synchronization instead of adding sleeps
When PhantomJS reports a successful load but Selenium cannot find an element, wait for the application state that matters: a visible element, a populated result, a URL change, or a specific JavaScript condition. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance identifies poor synchronization as its most common error source.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
options.add_argument('--headless=new')
options.add_argument('--window-size=1440,1000')
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get('https://example.com')
ready = WebDriverWait(driver, 30).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, '#app .ready'))
)
print(ready.text)
finally:
driver.quit()
This example uses Selenium 4’s Chrome options object and an explicit wait. Replace the selector with an element that represents readiness in your application. If the page uses a network request that has no visible marker, wait for a stable DOM value or a JavaScript state exposed by the application. Keep browser-console and network logging enabled in CI so a timeout includes the underlying error rather than only Selenium’s exception message.

Use remote debugging when the DOM is wrong
Launch PhantomJS with --remote-debugger-port=9000, then open its inspector from a WebKit-based browser. Inspect console errors, network activity, and breakpoints at the code that should create the missing DOM. Remote debugging is especially useful when the HTTP status is successful but a syntax error, unsupported API, or failed bundle leaves the document structurally empty.

PhantomJS 2.1.1 is a legacy WebKit browser. Selenium removed native PhantomJS support because its WebDriver implementation was no longer actively developed and directs users toward headless Chrome or Firefox. A PhantomJS-specific constructor can therefore fail before navigation, even when PhantomJS itself can open the URL.
| Concern | PhantomJS repair | Headless Chrome or Firefox migration |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium support | Native integration is removed and maintenance is limited. | Supported Selenium 4 browser and driver combinations. |
| Web platform compatibility | Old WebKit JavaScript and APIs can break modern applications. | Current browser engines provide broader JavaScript and platform coverage. |
| TLS behavior | Depends on the bundled legacy TLS/OpenSSL stack and CA configuration. | Uses the browser’s maintained certificate and protocol implementation. |
| Driver maintenance | PhantomJS-specific WebDriver code is obsolete. | Selenium Manager can discover or download supported Chrome, Firefox, and Edge combinations. |
| Headless features | Legacy implementation with limited modern behavior. | Chrome’s current full-featured mode uses --headless=new; Firefox supports headless operation through Selenium. |
| Synchronization and diagnostics | Requires PhantomJS callbacks and remote debugging. | Retain explicit waits plus browser console and network logging. |
Migrate a test to Selenium 4
Headless Chrome
Replace PhantomJS constructors and legacy DesiredCapabilities with a browser Options object and W3C-compatible capabilities. Keep Chrome and chromedriver on matching major versions. Selenium Manager can reduce manual PATH errors by discovering or downloading a supported pair.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
options.add_argument('--headless=new')
options.add_argument('--disable-dev-shm-usage')
options.add_argument('--window-size=1365,900')
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get('https://example.com')
WebDriverWait(driver, 30).until(
EC.presence_of_element_located((By.TAG_NAME, 'body'))
)
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
Headless Firefox
Use Selenium 4 with Firefox 78 or newer and a current geckodriver. Configure an Options object rather than PhantomJS capabilities:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.firefox.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument('-headless')
driver = webdriver.Firefox(options=options)
try:
driver.get('https://example.com')
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
Do not carry unprefixed, non-standard PhantomJS capabilities into the new session. Selenium’s upgrade guidance warns that such capabilities can prevent a W3C session from starting. Port the intent—window size, proxy, downloads, certificates, or user agent—using the target browser’s documented options.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
PAGE_STATUS fail with resource errors |
DNS, firewall, proxy, certificate, or a timed-out dependency | Read the failing URL and error code; test it from the runner, correct network policy, and set the proper CA or proxy. |
| HTTP works, HTTPS fails | Legacy TLS stack or untrusted chain | Inspect OpenSSL/TLS and CA configuration; use ignore-SSL only as a short diagnostic. |
| Page source exists but app container is empty | JavaScript exception, unsupported API, or blocked bundle/API | Use onError, resource callbacks, and remote debugging; then move the test to a current browser if the API is unsupported. |
| Selenium says element not found immediately | Application is still rendering | Use an explicit wait for a meaningful DOM condition. |
| Selenium cannot create a PhantomJS session | Removed or obsolete native support | Migrate to Chrome or Firefox Options and W3C capabilities. |
| Run hangs after an error | Missing phantom.exit() or an unbounded wait |
Exit in every callback path and bound resource and readiness waits. |
| Only CI fails | Different binary, proxy, CA store, DNS, or driver version | Print versions and paths in the job, compare environment variables, and let Selenium Manager provision the supported driver. |
A practical reliability checklist
- Print PhantomJS, Selenium binding, browser, and driver versions at the start of every run.
- Run the direct PhantomJS diagnostic before launching Selenium.
- Save resource-error, resource-timeout, JavaScript, console, and network logs as CI artifacts.
- Use finite resource and explicit-wait timeouts; do not replace a synchronization problem with a very long global timeout.
- Test the exact URL and its third-party dependencies from the same machine or container as the test.
- Keep Chrome and chromedriver on matching major versions, or let Selenium Manager handle supported provisioning.
- When migrating, recreate the old viewport, proxy, cookies, user agent, and authentication deliberately; do not copy obsolete PhantomJS capability names.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image or PDF rather than an interactive Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the same request in other environments. The supplied Python and Node.js forms are:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free ScreenshotNeo plan.

FAQ
Can PhantomJS still be useful for a legacy regression suite?
It can help reproduce an old failure or preserve a historical baseline, but it should not be the destination for new Selenium coverage. Keep the diagnostic script and logs, then port assertions to a maintained browser so future failures reflect current web behavior.
What should I archive when reporting a blank-page failure?
Archive the exact URL, version output, command line, final status, final URL, title, HTML length or source, resource errors and timeouts, JavaScript stack traces, proxy and certificate settings, and the Selenium exception with its wait condition. That set distinguishes an unreachable dependency from a rendering or synchronization defect.

Why does changing the global Selenium timeout rarely solve this?
A global timeout controls how long Selenium waits, not whether PhantomJS trusts the certificate, can reach a proxy, understands the page’s JavaScript, or receives a required API response. Identify that underlying condition first; then choose a bounded wait appropriate to the application.
