If a PhantomJS test changes a <select> but its jQuery click code does not run, first decide what you are testing. A jQuery .trigger('click') can invoke jQuery handlers, but it is not proof that PhantomJS performed a native user click. Selection-driven application code usually belongs on change: set the option value, trigger the event the page uses, and verify the resulting state. Then check load timing, selectors, replaced DOM nodes, page-context boundaries, console output, and the exact PhantomJS executable and jQuery versions.
Why a select “click” fails in PhantomJS
Three separate states are often confused:
- DOM state: which option is selected and what
select.valuereturns. - jQuery state: which handlers are bound to the current element and which synthetic events they receive.
- browser interaction: the native focus, mouse, keyboard, default-action, and event sequence produced by a real user.
The jQuery Learning Center explains that .trigger() runs handlers bound to an element without user interaction, but it does not reproduce every native event or default action (jQuery: Triggering Event Handlers). A test that needs application logic should normally exercise the page’s change path. A test that must prove native interaction needs browser-level interaction in the actual PhantomJS/WebKit environment; there is no single universal “click a select” recipe established for every page.
Use the event your application actually handles
Inspect the control and its value
Start inside page.evaluate, where DOM APIs and page variables are available. Return only JSON-serializable data; PhantomJS cannot transfer a DOM node or an outer-scope closure across the boundary (PhantomJS webpage.evaluate).

Trigger a change handler deliberately
If the page listens for change, set the value and trigger that event. The following code runs in the page context and confirms that the element exists before changing it:

});That call does not establish that a native mouse click occurred, that the control gained focus, or that the browser performed a default selection action. If your code binds both events, test them separately so a passing synthetic click is not mistaken for a passing interaction test.
Load jQuery before running dependent code
PhantomJS’s documented automation pattern loads a library with page.includeJs and starts page-side work from the include callback (PhantomJS Page Automation). Calling $ before that callback creates a race.

});Keep phantom.exit() inside the callback (and after your assertions). Exiting earlier can terminate the page before jQuery or the handler has loaded.
Verify that the handler is attached to the current element
Check direct and delegated bindings
jQuery’s event guide covers .on() and shorthand methods such as .click() and .change() (jQuery Event Basics). A direct binding such as $('#country').on('change', handler) applies only to the element that existed at binding time. If another script replaces that <select>, the new node has no handler. Bind after replacement or delegate from a stable ancestor:

Separate synthetic tests from native-interaction tests
When a synthetic event is the right test
Use val(...).trigger('change') when your requirement is “given this selected value, the application updates its model, fetches data, or toggles fields.” It is fast, deterministic, and directly exercises the handler.
When browser interaction is required
Use a browser-level action when the requirement includes focus styling, keyboard navigation, native option selection, default actions, or the exact event order produced by WebKit. Inspect the control in the PhantomJS version you actually run and verify the resulting value and application state. The available PhantomJS documentation describes page automation and remote debugging, but does not define one universal select-click implementation for every control and page (PhantomJS Troubleshooting).
Do not “fix” a native-interaction test by replacing it with .trigger('click'); that changes the behavior under test. Conversely, do not require native interaction when the application contract is simply a change event.
Make PhantomJS diagnostics visible
Messages logged inside the page are not displayed by default. Forward them with page.onConsoleMessage:

console.log('after: ' + $('#country').val());If logs still do not explain the failure, PhantomJS’s troubleshooting guidance describes remote debugging with a WebKit-based inspector. Pause at the point before the event, inspect the live DOM and listeners, and compare what the page contains with what your selector assumes.
Check versions and the executable you are really running
Run:
phantomjs --versionPhantomJS troubleshooting notes that multiple installations can cause a different executable to be invoked. Record the PhantomJS/WebKit version, jQuery version, URL, and whether the select was replaced after load. Legacy WebKit differences can change event behavior, so a result is meaningful only when those versions are known.

- Confirm the URL opened successfully and wait for the page’s required content.
- Inspect
document.querySelector(...),value, andselectedIndexinpage.evaluate. - Load jQuery with
page.includeJs; run all dependent code in its callback. - Verify the handler is bound to the current node, or use delegation if the node is replaced.
- Set the value explicitly and trigger
changefor selection-driven logic. - Use
trigger('click')only for jQuery click-handler coverage. - Forward console output and page errors; add a temporary handler flag.
- For native behavior, use an interaction method supported by your exact PhantomJS/WebKit page and inspect the resulting state.
- Check
phantomjs --versionand eliminate duplicate installations from your PATH.
Common failures and precise fixes

Should I trigger click or change on a select?
Trigger change when the application reacts to the selected value. Trigger click only when you are explicitly testing a jQuery click handler; it does not prove native interaction.
Can PhantomJS page.evaluate access my PhantomJS variables?
No. The function runs in the page context, and only JSON-serializable arguments and return values cross the boundary.
Why does the same script behave differently on two machines?
Check the actual PhantomJS executable with phantomjs –version, then record its WebKit and jQuery versions; duplicate installations can invoke different binaries.
