Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMost PDFKit runtime errors come from one of four places: Rails cannot execute wkhtmltopdf, the renderer cannot reach CSS or images, it deadlocks while requesting assets from a single-thread server, or the response is not sent as a PDF. Check the executable from the Rails process’s environment first, then work through asset URLs, concurrency, response headers, and fonts. PDFKit is a Ruby wrapper; the actual HTML-to-PDF rendering is performed by the separate wkhtmltopdf command-line program.
How PDFKit and wkhtmltopdf fit together
PDFKit turns HTML into a PDF by invoking wkhtmltopdf, which renders HTML using WebKit. Installing the Ruby gem alone does not guarantee that the renderer executable is installed, executable by Rails, or visible in Rails’s environment. The PDFKit README describes the integration and its configuration options: PDFKit project README.
PDFKit can be installed as Rails middleware, or called directly from application code. The main diagnostic distinction is whether the problem occurs before wkhtmltopdf starts (binary or environment), while it fetches page resources (URLs or concurrency), during rendering (fonts or content), or after rendering (HTTP response handling).
The README snapshot lists Ruby 2.5–3.1 and Rails 4.2, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, and 7.0. That is a version-specific statement in the documentation, not a guarantee of compatibility with current Ruby, Rails, or PDFKit releases. Check the version of the gem and the documentation for the versions actually deployed.

Fix “No wkhtmltopdf executable found”
Start by verifying the binary from the same environment and under the same operating-system user that runs the Rails process. Running a command successfully in your interactive terminal does not prove that systemd, Docker, Passenger, or a background worker has the same PATH or filesystem access.
- Check whether the executable is installed. On Unix-like systems, run
which wkhtmltopdf. On systems withoutwhich, use the platform’s executable lookup or inspect the installation location. Record the full path. - Run it directly. Try
/absolute/path/to/wkhtmltopdf --versionas the Rails service user. If it fails, capture its error output; PDFKit may report only a generic wrapper error. - Check execution rights and architecture. Confirm that the service user can execute the file and that the binary matches the host operating system and CPU architecture.
- Set the absolute path in PDFKit. Create or update
config/initializers/pdfkit.rb:
PDFKit.configure do |config|
config.wkhtmltopdf = '/absolute/path/to/wkhtmltopdf'
end
Use the actual path found on the server, not the example path. Restart the Rails process after changing the initializer. PDFKit documents the explicit path configuration in its README. A Rails discussion also illustrates the error text developers may see when a configured path does not resolve: Rails discussion: “No wkhtmltopdf executable found”.
If the direct invocation succeeds but Rails still cannot find the program, compare the service’s environment with your shell, especially PATH, container mounts, and the configured absolute path. If it starts but exits unsuccessfully, inspect stderr and the renderer’s own error rather than treating every failure as a missing executable.

Restore missing CSS, images, or JavaScript
wkhtmltopdf loads referenced resources separately from the Rails request that initiated PDF generation. A relative path such as /assets/application.css may not resolve in the renderer’s context, and a URL that works in a browser on your laptop may not be reachable from the deployed application environment.
- Use absolute filesystem paths or complete URLs for images, stylesheets, and scripts.
- Set PDFKit’s
root_urlor configure the asset host when the generated page needs an externally reachable application hostname. The precise configuration depends on how the application builds its asset URLs; consult the PDFKit README. - Test resource reachability from the same host or container that runs wkhtmltopdf. Check DNS, TLS, authentication, and firewall rules where relevant.
- Verify that the rendered HTML actually contains the expected URL and that the target resource returns the expected content to the renderer.
For example, a stylesheet link should resolve to a full URL or a file path visible to the renderer, rather than relying on a browser’s current page location. Do not assume that having the asset in the Rails asset pipeline means a separate wkhtmltopdf process can retrieve it.
Diagnose hangs during development
A development-only hang can be a callback deadlock. The original Rails request waits for wkhtmltopdf to finish; meanwhile, wkhtmltopdf requests CSS, images, or other assets from the Rails server. If that server has only one request thread, it cannot serve the callback until the original request releases the thread—which it is waiting to do.

Use a development server configuration that can handle concurrent requests, or embed the required resources so the renderer does not need to call back into the application. PDFKit’s troubleshooting notes describe this issue and give a multi-worker Unicorn configuration as an example. The exact server setting depends on the server and version you use. If production does not hang but development does, compare thread and worker capacity as well as resource URL behavior.
Make the browser treat the response as a PDF
If the generated bytes appear as garbled characters or are handled as ordinary text, check the response’s content type. Return Content-Type: application/pdf for a PDF response. Also verify that the response body contains the generated PDF rather than an HTML error page or an empty body; a renderer failure can otherwise look like a browser display problem.

Standardize fonts and protect the renderer
PDF output depends on the runtime’s installed fonts and fontconfig/freetype2 libraries. If line breaks, glyphs, or layout differ between machines, compare the fonts and rendering environment in each host or container image, then install and standardize the required fonts. The wkhtmltopdf project discusses these runtime dependencies on its downloads page.

Treat HTML passed to wkhtmltopdf as security-sensitive. The project explicitly warns against rendering untrusted HTML and advises sanitizing user-supplied HTML and JavaScript; unsafe input can put the server running the renderer at risk. Do not pass arbitrary user content to the renderer without an appropriate sanitization and isolation strategy.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
No wkhtmltopdf executable found |
The binary is absent, not on the Rails process’s PATH, at the wrong configured path, or not executable. | Run it directly as the Rails user, verify permissions and architecture, then set its absolute path in config/initializers/pdfkit.rb. |
| PDF has no CSS, images, or JavaScript | Resources use relative URLs or cannot be reached from the renderer. | Use absolute file paths or full URLs; check root_url/asset host and test access from the deployment environment. |
| PDF request hangs in development | A single-thread server is blocked while wkhtmltopdf calls back for assets. | Allow concurrent requests with suitable workers or embed the resources to eliminate the callback. |
| Browser shows unreadable output | The response is not labeled as a PDF, or the body is not actually a PDF. | Send Content-Type: application/pdf and confirm the generated response body. |
| Output differs between machines | Fonts or fontconfig/freetype2 differ across runtime environments. | Install and standardize the needed fonts and compare the runtime images. |
When to keep a local renderer or use a managed option
A local PDFKit/wkhtmltopdf setup gives a team control over the executable, rendering environment, network access, and deployment. In exchange, the team must own binary installation, permissions, font consistency, asset reachability, security isolation, concurrency behavior, and useful error logging. A managed HTML-to-PDF renderer can shift some executable and runtime maintenance to a provider, but still needs evaluation for asset access, font behavior, isolation, observability, deployment effort, and cost. No provider-specific claims are made here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing the PDFKit gem install wkhtmltopdf too?
No. PDFKit invokes the separate wkhtmltopdf executable, so verify that executable independently.
Why does wkhtmltopdf work in my terminal but not in Rails?
The Rails service may run with a different PATH, user, container filesystem, or permissions. Test the executable from the service environment and configure its absolute path.
Can PDFKit generate PDFs from user-submitted HTML safely?
Do not render untrusted HTML or JavaScript without sanitization and appropriate isolation; wkhtmltopdf warns that unsafe input can compromise the server.
