When a Rails PDF looks different in production than in development, compare the renderer executable, the assets it can actually reach, and the host platform before changing your template CSS. Wicked PDF runs wkhtmltopdf as a separate process, so a page that renders correctly in a browser does not prove that the PDF process can load the same stylesheets, images, scripts, or fonts.
Start by comparing the PDF runtime, not just Rails
Write down the environment details for both development and production before changing anything. Wicked PDF invokes wkhtmltopdf outside the Rails application; its README explains that normal Rails layouts do not automatically work for that separate process. The executable, its command-line options, and the files it can access are part of the PDF runtime, not incidental details of the Rails view. See the Wicked PDF README.
- Wicked PDF gem version and the code path used to generate the document.
- Path to the wkhtmltopdf executable, its version, and the options passed to it.
- Operating system, container or image, and processor architecture.
- PDF page size, orientation, margins, and any zoom or other layout options.
- Whether the PDF view includes stylesheets, JavaScript, images, or fonts, and how each is referenced.
Check these facts in the actual production runtime, such as the deployed application container or host. A developer machine’s executable may differ from the one installed in production even when the Rails code and gem are the same. Do not assume a particular wkhtmltopdf build or command option: establish what your deployment runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecord the executable and options
Inspect the application configuration and deployment setup to find the executable Wicked PDF launches and the options supplied to it. Run the executable’s version command in each environment using the path actually configured for that environment; compare the reported versions and paths. If production runs inside a container, inspect from within that container rather than from the host machine.

Keep the evidence together with the output PDF and the HTML passed to the renderer. This turns “it looks different” into a comparison of specific inputs. If a mismatch begins after a deploy, check whether the executable, system image, asset build, or PDF options changed in that release.
Verify that the renderer can load every asset
A Rails view can appear correct in a browser while wkhtmltopdf produces missing styles, images, or fonts. The renderer is an external process; a relative URL or a Rails-specific asset reference that resolves in the browser may not resolve from the renderer’s context. Inspect the HTML delivered to wkhtmltopdf and check every referenced asset from the production process’s point of view.
Check the rendered HTML and references
- Capture or inspect the exact HTML used for the PDF in each environment, not only the template source.
- List its stylesheet, script, image, and font references. Note whether each is an absolute URL, a relative URL, or a local file path.
- For an absolute URL, confirm the production renderer can reach it, including any authentication, network, DNS, or TLS requirements that apply in your deployment.
- For a local path, confirm that the file exists and is readable by the user running the renderer. A path on the Rails host may not exist inside a separate container.
- Check renderer output or logs for failed resource loads, then compare the affected files with the resulting PDF.
The Wicked PDF documentation recommends absolute asset references or its helpers/CDN approach for this reason. Avoid assuming that a browser-relative path such as /assets/application.css automatically means the same thing to wkhtmltopdf. Use the documented helper or a URL/path strategy that is valid in the actual rendering environment. The right choice depends on where the process runs and how assets are served.

Distinguish missing assets from CSS differences
If the production PDF loses colors, spacing, or layout wholesale, first determine whether its stylesheet loaded. If only selected images or glyphs are absent, inspect those individual URLs or files. A font fallback can alter line wrapping and page breaks even though the rest of the CSS appears intact. Change one class of asset at a time so a newly successful load is not confused with a layout-engine difference.

Make production assets available to PDF views
Production asset delivery commonly uses compiled and cached files, while development is configured for rapid asset iteration. Consequently, a PDF view may reference a source asset successfully in development but fail to find its deployed, fingerprinted counterpart in production. Rails’ Asset Pipeline Guide describes production asset compilation and delivery; exact setup depends on Rails version and whether the application uses Sprockets, Propshaft, or another asset system.
- Identify the assets the PDF view needs, including fonts and images as well as stylesheets and scripts.
- Ensure those assets are included in the production asset build using the mechanism appropriate to the application’s asset system and Rails version.
- Build assets as part of the same production release process used for the deployed application. For Sprockets applications, consult the Rails guide and the app’s deployment configuration for the applicable precompilation task; do not assume one command or configuration fits every Rails setup.
- After deployment, inspect the final HTML generated for the PDF. Confirm its fingerprinted URLs or file paths point to files present in the deployed output.
- Check that the renderer can access those deployed files or URLs from its own host or container.
Wicked PDF specifically recommends precompiling assets to avoid production failures when runtime asset compilation is disabled. Do not solve an absent production file merely by changing a CSS rule: first establish that the renderer received the intended asset at all.
Compare the host platform, fonts, and page geometry
Even with identical HTML and assets, the same wkhtmltopdf version can produce different output on different platforms. Wicked PDF’s documentation notes that rendering resolution may vary by platform and shows a zoom adjustment as an example for matching Linux output to Windows. Treat that as a diagnostic, not a universal value: validate any adjustment against the actual executable, operating systems, and PDF page.

Check platform and typography
- Compare operating system and architecture, including the production container image if used.
- Compare installed font families and verify that the renderer process can see the fonts. If a font is missing, determine whether fallback typography accounts for changed line lengths or page breaks.
- Keep paper size, orientation, margins, and renderer options identical while comparing environments.
- Test a zoom adjustment only after confirming assets and fonts load. Record the value and validate it on the production executable; do not copy a platform-specific example as a general fix.
Separate page geometry from content flow
A PDF that breaks at different points may be responding to a changed font, page size, margin, or renderer resolution rather than different record data. Use the same fixed data fixture and page settings in both environments. Compare a single page or a stable element first, then assess full-document pagination. Avoid compensating for a missing font or stylesheet with arbitrary width and zoom changes, since that can conceal the underlying discrepancy and create new failures elsewhere.

Reproduce the mismatch with a fixed fixture
A useful reproduction holds application data and markup steady while varying one environment input at a time. Save the generated PDFs, the HTML passed to the renderer, and available renderer logs for each run. Compare changes in this order: executable and options; asset availability; fonts and platform; then the remaining layout behavior.
- Choose a representative record or fixture with stable text, images, and page breaks.
- Generate the PDF in development and production from equivalent data and the same PDF-specific view.
- Inspect the HTML and resource references for each run, then verify the referenced files or URLs from the corresponding renderer host.
- Compare executable versions, operating systems, fonts, geometry, and options against the inventory you recorded.
- Change a single variable, regenerate both PDFs, and note whether the difference disappeared or moved.
This sequence helps distinguish a Rails-data or template difference from an external resource failure or a platform-dependent rendering difference. If output remains inconsistent after the inputs above match, preserve the minimal fixture and logs for further investigation rather than adding several unverified CSS or zoom adjustments at once.
Troubleshoot common failure patterns
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Styles are absent or partly missing in production | The renderer cannot resolve a relative reference, or the compiled production stylesheet is missing or inaccessible. | Inspect the final HTML and verify the referenced URL or file from the renderer’s environment; confirm the asset was included in the deployed build. |
| Images appear in development but not production | Different URL resolution, inaccessible local paths, or a deployed asset reference that points to a file not present in the release. | Check the exact image reference and test its availability from the production renderer host or container. |
| Text wraps differently or pages break at different points | Different installed fonts or fallback behavior, page geometry, renderer build, or platform rendering behavior. | Compare fonts, executable/version, OS, paper settings, margins, and options using the same fixture. |
| A proposed zoom change fixes one environment but harms another | The adjustment was treated as universal despite platform and executable differences. | Validate a measured adjustment against the target executable and page; retain the same fixture and change only zoom. |
| A PDF works locally but fails after deployment | Production compilation may be disabled at runtime and a needed asset may not have been precompiled or deployed. | Check the asset build and deployed output, then verify the final production HTML points to available assets. |
Account for security and operational reliability
When PDF content includes user-controlled HTML or JavaScript, treat rendering as a security boundary. The wkhtmltopdf downloads page warns against using wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML unless user-supplied HTML and JavaScript are sanitized. This warning is relevant to content safety; it does not by itself explain a rendering mismatch.

ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for wkhtmltopdf and not a way to render a Rails PDF. It can help capture the deployed HTML page visually when you are checking whether the site itself differs from the document output. It does not establish that wkhtmltopdf can load the same assets or that PDF pagination will match. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
For a web-page screenshot, one GET request returns an image or PDF. Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture by default, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. Frequently Asked Questions
Does matching the Wicked PDF gem version guarantee identical PDFs?
No. The renderer executable, assets, fonts, host platform, and options can still differ.
Can a screenshot of the web page prove the PDF will render correctly?
No. A browser screenshot can help inspect the page, but wkhtmltopdf is a separate renderer with its own asset access and layout behavior.
