If Notes or Files keeps closing on your iPhone, first protect any notes and files that may exist only on that device. Then check Apple’s service status, restart and update the iPhone, and work out whether the crash is tied to one note, file, account, or storage provider. There is no single confirmed iOS 26 fix for every Notes and Files crash, so avoid deleting apps, changing iCloud settings, or erasing the phone until your data is verified.
Before troubleshooting, protect your data
Do not start by deleting Notes or Files, switching off iCloud synchronization, or erasing the iPhone. Any of those steps can complicate recovery if an item has not synced.
- Sign in at iCloud.com and check Notes and iCloud Drive. Confirm that important items are present and current.
- If possible, check another iPhone, iPad, or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account.
- In Notes, look for notes stored under On My iPhone or accounts such as Gmail, Outlook, or Exchange. These are separate locations; a note in one is not necessarily in iCloud Notes.
- In Files, identify anything stored locally under On My iPhone, as well as items from third-party providers. Confirm that important cloud files are available from the provider’s website or another device.
- Check Recently Deleted if an item seems to be missing. If Notes opens even briefly, copy important text and save attachments somewhere safe.
A device backup is useful, but it is not the same as verifying that every synchronized item is present and up to date. iCloud Drive synchronization and an iPhone backup are separate; do not assume every iCloud Drive file is duplicated in a device backup.

Check Apple System Status for iCloud Notes, iCloud Drive, iCloud Account & Sign In, iCloud Backup, and the App Store. These services have separate status indicators. If the relevant service is experiencing an outage, wait for it to recover before trying to refresh synchronization. Repeatedly turning iCloud services off and on during an outage is unlikely to help and can add confusion.

Try these low-risk fixes first
- Force-close the affected app. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to open the app switcher. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click the Home button. Find Notes or Files and swipe its preview up, then reopen the app.
- Restart the iPhone. Use the normal shutdown procedure for your model, wait several seconds, then turn it back on. If the phone is frozen and will not restart normally, use Apple’s model-specific force-restart instructions. A force-close or restart can clear a temporary hang, but will not necessarily repair a particular damaged note, file, account connection, or iOS issue.
- Install the current iOS 26 update offered to your phone. Go to Settings → General → Software Update. Check the version shown there rather than relying on a version number in an older article: available updates can vary by date and device. Apple’s iOS 26 update information lists bug fixes and security updates, but does not establish a general Notes-and-Files crash fix. An update may help with a software problem; do not assume it will resolve every crash.
- Update apps that integrate with Files. Open the App Store, tap your account icon, and install available updates for cloud-storage apps, PDF readers, document managers, and other apps that provide content to Files.
- Check free device storage. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. If space is very low, remove or offload nonessential apps and delete downloaded videos or podcasts you can replace. Avoid deleting unsynchronized notes or files. Restart after freeing space. Low storage can contribute to failed downloads or broader instability, but it is not a confirmed cause in every case. Work out what triggers the crash
Notice whether the app closes immediately, or only after you open a particular note, folder, file, search result, account, or storage location. That clue helps separate a general app problem from an item or provider problem.

If Notes keeps crashing
It crashes as soon as you open it
Check whether Notes works at iCloud.com or on another Apple device. If your data is visible and current there, you have a safer reference point before trying account or app changes. If it is not visible, check whether the notes belong to another configured account, such as Gmail or Exchange, and check Recently Deleted. Do not treat missing data as merely an app-crash problem.
It crashes when you open one note
A note with many images, scans, drawings, PDFs, or audio recordings—or one that was recently edited, shared, or imported—may be a useful place to investigate. That does not prove the note is damaged. Open it through iCloud.com or another Apple device if possible, copy its text into a new note, and save attachments separately. Once you have confirmed the copy is complete, you can consider recreating the note or removing a problematic attachment. Allow syncing to finish before reopening it on the iPhone.

iOS 26 supports Markdown import and export, but that alone is not evidence that an imported Markdown note caused a crash. Treat it as a possible detail to check only if the problem began after importing a particular note.
Check Notes accounts and iCloud synchronization
Notes can be stored in iCloud, locally on the iPhone, or under a mail account. In iOS 26, review Settings → Apps → Notes → Notes Accounts to see which accounts are configured; labels or paths can vary with the device’s software configuration. For iCloud Notes, review Settings → [your name] → iCloud → See All → Notes.
Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Apple Account, iCloud Notes is enabled if you use it, and you have available iCloud storage. Check iCloud.com or another device before changing the Notes sync setting. If you decide to switch synchronization off, read the prompt carefully: the choice about keeping or removing a local copy matters. Do not choose to remove local notes unless you have verified the synced copy.

If Files keeps crashing
If Files stays open long enough, tap Browse and test locations separately: On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, third-party providers, and any external or network locations. Avoid reopening a folder or file that reliably triggers the crash until you have tried to access it elsewhere.

A fresh download may help if only the local copy is affected. If the crash appears when browsing Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, or another provider, update that provider’s app and check whether the same issue occurs in a different Files location. Files is Apple’s interface; a third-party provider extension can still be involved in what happens inside it.
If you need to isolate a provider, first confirm its cloud copy is available. Then try updating, signing in again, or temporarily disabling or removing that provider’s app or location. Removing an account or app can make its files disappear from Files until it is added or authenticated again. It does not establish that the cloud files themselves were deleted. Apple’s App Store history for Keep It, for example, includes Files-integration fixes; that shows provider compatibility can matter, not that this app causes general Files crashes.

Reinstall Notes or Files only after verifying data
Reinstalling can replace a faulty local app installation, but it is not a safe first step if unsynchronized content may be stored locally. Before deleting either app:
- Verify important Notes content on iCloud.com or another device, and export or copy anything stored only on the iPhone or another account.
- Confirm that important Files items exist in their original cloud service or elsewhere, particularly items under On My iPhone.
- If practical, make a current computer backup, and make sure you know the Apple Account password.
Then touch and hold the app icon, choose the available remove or delete option, and confirm. Restart the iPhone, redownload the app from the App Store, reopen it, and give synchronization time to complete. If iOS does not offer an option to delete the app, skip this step. Apple’s guidance for apps that close unexpectedly also recommends standard troubleshooting such as restarting and checking for updates.

If other apps are crashing too
When the problem extends beyond Notes and Files, check device storage, install the latest iOS 26 update offered to your iPhone, and restart. If the phone is repeatedly restarting, Settings is unusable, or several Apple apps remain unstable, consider a recovery-mode update. Back up first if you can. Connect the iPhone to a Mac and use Finder, or connect it to a Windows PC and use Apple Devices. Enter recovery mode using the button sequence for your model and choose Update before Restore. An update attempts to reinstall iOS without choosing the erase option; Restore can erase the device. Apple’s iOS 26 release notes describe Recovery Assistant and computer-based recovery for certain update failures.

If you are using an iOS 26 developer or public beta, say so when seeking help: beta releases can contain regressions and have separate release notes. Preserve your data before attempting to move to a supported public release, and use Feedback Assistant to report reproducible beta problems.
Resetting settings or erasing the iPhone
Reset All Settings is a later option, not a targeted repair for Notes or Files. Find it at Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. It does not intentionally erase personal content, but it resets preferences such as network settings, privacy permissions, keyboard dictionaries, and Apple Pay cards. Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings unless you have verified or backed up your data, know your Apple Account password, and understand the consequences. Check the backup date: a backup may not include recent changes, and restoring it may bring back the condition that caused the problem. Consider an Apple Support consultation or recovery-mode Update first.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if multiple built-in apps crash, the iPhone repeatedly reboots, important data is missing both from the device and iCloud.com, a recovery update fails, storage reporting appears clearly wrong, or the issue affects multiple devices after an update. If the crash is limited to a third-party provider, contact that app’s support as well. Apple Community posts can describe individual experiences, including reports of sync or data-access trouble, but they are anecdotal and do not establish a confirmed widespread iOS 26 defect: Apple Community discussion.
