If your iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 has no sound, first check Silent mode, the right volume control, and where audio is playing. Then test the ringtone slider, media playback, and a speakerphone call to tell a setting or routing problem from a likely speaker or receiver fault. These steps do not require erasing your data.
First, identify which sound is missing
Ringer and alert sounds, music, call audio, and speakerphone use different settings and audio paths. Start with the symptom that matches yours rather than changing every setting at once.
| What you notice | What to check first |
|---|---|
| No sound anywhere | Silent mode, volume, Bluetooth or AirPlay routing, speaker openings, then restart and software. |
| Music or videos work, but calls and alerts do not | Ring/Silent switch, Ringtone and Alerts volume, Focus, and notification settings. |
| Only one app is silent | That app’s mute control and playback volume; test audio in another app to compare. |
| Normal calls are silent, but speakerphone works | Check the top receiver opening and call volume. On iPhone 12 or 12 Pro, see the service-program note below. |
| Calls work, but the bottom speaker is silent | Test the ringtone slider and music or video playback; inspect the bottom openings. |
| Headphones work but the built-in speaker does not | Check output routing and obstructions. If those are ruled out, the built-in speaker path may need service. |
| Sound is muffled, crackling, or distorted | Remove the case, check for obstruction or liquid exposure, and seek service if the problem persists. |
Try these quick checks
- Turn off Silent mode. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 have a physical Ring/Silent switch on the side. Move it toward the display so orange is not visible. Silent mode suppresses ringing, alerts, and sound effects, but does not necessarily mute music or every other sound. Apple explains Silent mode.
- Raise the correct volume. Play a song or video and press Volume Up to raise media volume. To raise ringer and alert volume, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and move Ringtone and Alerts higher. Consider turning off Change with Buttons there if you keep lowering alert volume by accident. The side buttons affect different audio categories depending on what is active; see Apple’s volume guide.
- Check Focus. Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center, tap Focus, and turn off Do Not Disturb or another active Focus mode for a test. Focus can silence calls, alerts, and notifications; it is not a general explanation for missing music audio.
- Send playback back to the iPhone. While audio is playing, open its playback-destination control from the Lock Screen or Control Center and select iPhone. The sound may be going to AirPods, a car, a television, HomePod, or another speaker.
- Disconnect Bluetooth accessories. Tap the Bluetooth control in Control Center to disconnect accessories, then test. For a clearer test that Bluetooth is off, go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn it off there. Control Center may only disconnect accessories temporarily rather than fully turning Bluetooth off. Apple describes the distinction.
- Remove the case or screen protector temporarily. Check that neither covers the bottom speaker openings or top receiver opening.
If a wired audio accessory or adapter is attached, disconnect it and test without the dock, car cable, or adapter. If the phone appears stuck in headphone mode, try disconnecting the accessory, restarting, and testing again. There is not one universal fix: an accessory, adapter, port contamination, routing state, or hardware fault can produce similar symptoms.

Test the speaker, receiver, and audio source
Use these tests in order and note which outputs work. That result is more useful than simply raising the volume repeatedly.

- Test alerts: Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider. If it is silent or its speaker button is dimmed, Apple says the speaker may need service.
- Test media: Play a song or video, make sure the playback destination is iPhone, and adjust media volume while it plays.
- Test a call: Call someone and switch to speakerphone. If speakerphone works but the normal call receiver does not, the top receiver path—not necessarily all phone audio—is the issue. If neither works, check routing and the broader speaker/software possibilities.
- Test input and playback: Record a short clip in Voice Memos and play it back. This can help separate a microphone/input problem from a speaker-output problem; it does not by itself prove either component is healthy.
- Compare headphones: If audio works through headphones but not the iPhone speaker, the source audio may be fine while the built-in speaker path remains suspect.
Static or crackling during calls can sometimes be related to network reception rather than the speaker alone. Try a call in a different location before concluding that the hardware is defective. Apple’s speaker troubleshooting guide also recommends testing the Ringtone and Alerts slider and trying speakerphone.
Inspect and clean the openings safely
Remove the case and any film that could cover the openings. Inspect both the bottom speaker area and the top receiver. If you see dirt, use only a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush and brush gently, following Apple’s cleaning guidance.
- Do not push a pin, needle, SIM tool, or other metal object into a grille.
- Do not pour water, alcohol, or cleaning solution into an opening.
- Do not blast compressed air at the speaker or receiver.
- Do not scrape or brush aggressively. Some openings contain microphones or other components; not every visible hole is a speaker.
If the phone has been exposed to liquid, dry the exterior and disconnect accessories. Do not charge it while it is wet. If audio stays muffled or distorted after the exterior is dry, or the phone was dropped or damaged, contact Apple or a repair provider instead of trying to force water out with tools or heat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRestart and update before resetting settings
- Restart normally. A restart is a low-risk step if a temporary software or routing problem is involved.
- Force-restart only if needed. If the screen is frozen or the iPhone does not respond, quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Check for an iOS update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Back up the iPhone and ensure it has adequate power before installing an available update. An update may address software problems, but it cannot repair a physically damaged speaker.
Reset settings only if simpler checks fail
Do not erase the iPhone just to troubleshoot sound. If the problem seems tied to network or Bluetooth configuration, you can consider Reset Network Settings first. This removes saved network settings, so be prepared to reconnect.

If the problem persists and seems software-related, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This does not delete photos, messages, apps, documents, or other media, but it does restore or remove settings, including saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, Apple Pay cards, Face ID settings, sound settings, privacy permissions, and VPN configurations. Expect to reconnect to Wi-Fi, pair Bluetooth devices again, and reconfigure preferences. Apple details what changes in its Reset All Settings guide.
Erase All Content and Settings is different: it removes your content and is not a routine sound fix. Do not choose it unless you have a separate reason, a current backup, and are prepared to set up or restore the iPhone.
iPhone 12 and 12 Pro: historical receiver service program
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to seek service
Stop troubleshooting and arrange an inspection if the Ringtone and Alerts slider remains silent after the basic checks, its speaker button is dimmed, sound is persistently distorted, or the receiver stays silent during calls while speakerphone works. Service is also appropriate after a drop or liquid exposure, or when routing checks, cleaning, restart, and a settings reset have not helped.
Apple offers in-person service through Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers, as well as mail-in service. Check the phone’s coverage and request a model- and location-specific estimate before authorizing repair. The final fee depends on inspection, coverage, location, parts availability, and damage; out-of-warranty fees may also involve tax and shipping. See Apple’s iPhone service and repair options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my iPhone have no sound but headphones work?
The audio source may be working while playback is routed to an accessory, the speaker openings are obstructed, or the built-in speaker path has a fault. Select iPhone as the playback destination, remove the case, test the Ringtone and Alerts slider, and seek service if the built-in speaker remains silent.

Does Do Not Disturb mute music?
Focus modes primarily silence calls, alerts, and notifications. They are not usually the explanation when music or video playback itself has no sound.
Does Reset All Settings delete photos?
No. It preserves photos, messages, apps, and other media, but resets settings such as Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, sound settings, and Face ID configuration.
Is Apple’s iPhone 12 no-sound repair program still active?
Apple’s page stated a three-year coverage period after first retail sale. That period has elapsed as of August 18, 2026; contact Apple to confirm whether any service option applies to your device and region.
