“No Preview Available” is a symptom, not a single fault. First identify the operating system and app, then test whether the failure affects one document or every program. A browser or PDF viewer problem needs a different fix from a Windows spooler, driver, or printer-connection problem.
Start with a two-minute scope check
- Record the context: note Windows or macOS version, application (such as Edge, Word, Preview, or Adobe Acrobat), printer model, and whether the file is a web page, PDF, image, or office document.
- Try another document in the same app. A damaged file or unusual font can break preview while ordinary files work.
- Try another app: on Windows, print a simple page from Notepad or a Windows test page; on Mac, try TextEdit. If preview works elsewhere, concentrate on the original app or its PDF/print component.
- Separate preview from printing: does the preview pane stay blank, does the app hang, or does the job also fail at the printer? A preview-only failure points toward the application; failures everywhere require checking the operating system and printer path.
Do not install an old Windows update or replace a printer until these tests show that the problem is system-wide. Official guidance treats printer setup, software, drivers, and communication as separate layers.
Windows: work from the application outward
Check the selected printer and application settings
Open the app’s print dialog and confirm that the intended printer—not “Print to PDF,” an offline queue, or a disconnected device—is selected. Verify paper size, orientation, page range, and color settings. Close and reopen the app after changing the printer. A malformed driver dialog can prevent a preview even when the printer itself is healthy.

Use Microsoft’s Windows printer troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Get Help, search for printer problems, and run the guided troubleshooter. Also confirm in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners that the printer is installed, online, and using the expected port or network address. Install or reinstall the current driver
Download the driver intended for your exact printer model and Windows edition from the manufacturer. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, remove a duplicate or stale printer entry, restart Windows, and add the printer again if necessary. A driver package may supply its own preview window; that is not the same as a universal Windows preview.
Restart the Print Spooler only when needed
The spooler manages queued jobs. Restarting it can clear a stuck queue, but deleting spool files removes pending jobs, so warn anyone sharing the printer before doing it.

- Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop.
- Open
C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERSand remove the files inside (leave the folder itself). - Return to Print Spooler, choose Start, then retry from the application.
Microsoft also recommends checking settings, printing a Windows test page, updating or reinstalling drivers, and restarting the app or PC in its guide for printing from Word, Excel, and other apps: Fix printing problems in Word, Excel, or other apps.
The exact legacy Microsoft error—and its narrow fix
Microsoft has an article whose wording closely matches “Preview not available.” It applies only to custom print applications that use Windows App print APIs on Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft attributes the defect to incomplete state cleanup and identifies the May 2016 update rollup KB3156418 as the fix. The support article was published in January 2017; it is not a general remedy for Windows 10 or Windows 11, and it should not be installed blindly on a different system. If your computer is one of those legacy editions and the failing program is a custom Windows print app, bring it fully up to date through the organization’s normal Windows servicing process, then retest. For every other Windows version, use the application, driver, spooler, and connection checks above instead.

Microsoft Edge and PDF preview failures
When the message appears only in Edge, compare the same page in another browser or save it as a PDF and open that file in a separate viewer. Edge’s troubleshooting guidance lists an unavailable built-in PDF viewer as one possible reason Edge cannot show a print preview; that is a condition to check, not proof that it is your cause.

- Update Edge, then restart it.
- Open edge://settings/content/pdfDocuments and check the PDF handling setting if the failure involves PDFs.
- Try an ordinary web page and a locally saved PDF. If only PDFs fail, repair or replace the PDF component or use another viewer.
- Confirm the printer and driver in the Windows print dialog, then follow Microsoft’s Edge print troubleshooting steps.
macOS: isolate the app, then inspect printer software
Do not apply Windows spooler instructions or KB3156418 to a Mac. Apple’s guidance is to try printing from another app—TextEdit is a useful test—and review the printer’s software and driver information. If TextEdit previews correctly while one application does not, update, reset, or reinstall that application rather than changing printer hardware. If every app fails, verify the printer is online, remove and re-add it in System Settings > Printers & Scanners, and install the manufacturer’s current macOS software where applicable. Manufacturer preview windows are optional
Some driver packages add a separate preview feature. HP documents a Windows Show preview before printing checkbox that appears only when HP Print Preview is installed. If that checkbox is missing, it does not mean Windows printing is broken; the optional HP component may simply not be installed. HP’s Mac instructions use the PDF menu, and the available controls vary by dialog. See HP’s Preview a print page for the relevant HP setup. Do not assume another manufacturer exposes the same label or option.

Recovery checklist after each change
- Restart the affected application; some print dialogs cache the old driver state.
- Print a one-page test document before resubmitting a long job.
- Check the queue for duplicates created during troubleshooting.
- Record which app, file type, printer, and driver version worked. That pattern is more useful to support than the message alone.
- If the issue began after a driver or application update, use the vendor’s supported rollback or reinstall process rather than downloading an unknown driver.

When to escalate
Contact the application vendor when one program fails across multiple printers or when its preview component is missing. Contact the printer manufacturer when several applications can preview but jobs fail only for one device or driver. For a managed Windows PC, ask the administrator before installing updates, removing queues, or clearing spool files; those actions can be restricted by policy and clearing the queue discards pending work.

No. Microsoft documents KB3156418 for Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 custom apps using Windows App print APIs. It is not a general Windows 11 fix.

It removes queued print jobs from that computer. Save or resubmit anything still needed before deleting spool files.
