The fix is usually to load the right configuration in Continue’s Agent mode, then verify that each entry has the required mcpServers structure and a launchable command or URL. The phrase “No MCP Servers configured” can describe an empty configuration panel; it does not by itself prove that an already-configured server failed at runtime. Work through the checks below in order.
First separate an empty list from a failed connection
Continue has two different failure states that are easy to confuse:
- Not listed: Continue is showing no server entries at all. The usual causes are the wrong mode, the wrong active configuration, an incorrect file location, or malformed YAML/JSON.
- Listed but unable to connect: The entry appears, but its process cannot start or its remote transport cannot be reached. This is a launch, environment, network, or server-specific problem.
Continue Hub pages can also display “No MCP Servers configured” simply because a published configuration has an empty MCP section. That page text is not evidence that every local Continue installation is broken. Start by checking the client you are actually using and the configuration it has selected.
Use Continue’s required mode and configuration locations
1. Switch to Agent mode
Continue’s MCP guide states that MCP can only be used in Agent mode. Select Agent in the Continue mode selector before judging whether a server is available. Chat or other modes may not show MCP tools even when the configuration is valid.

2. Identify the active configuration
Continue can use a selected configuration rather than the file you happened to edit. Confirm the active configuration in the Continue client, then make the change there or in the workspace server directory that the client is reading. Do not assume that a global configuration, another workspace, and the current project share the same server list.
3. Check the workspace directory
For a workspace-level setup, the documented directory is .continue/mcpServers at the root of the workspace opened in your IDE. A file elsewhere will not be discovered as a workspace server file. If you opened a parent directory or a different copy of the project, the path you edited may not belong to the active workspace.
Make the server definition match Continue’s schema
Continue expects an mcpServers key containing a list of server entries. Standalone YAML block files in .continue/mcpServers should also include the top-level metadata fields name, version, and schema. Each entry needs its own name. A command-launched server needs a resolvable command; args, env, and cwd are optional but often essential.
Minimal local stdio YAML
This is the documented structural pattern. The package and executable are only examples; verify that the particular MCP server supports them in your environment.

Verify launch details for a local server
Command and arguments
Run the command independently in a terminal first. The executable must be installed and visible to the environment used by the Continue process, not merely to an interactive shell with a different PATH. Confirm every argument, including package names, flags, and required subcommands, against the server’s own setup instructions.

Environment variables
API keys and other settings belong in the entry’s env map when the server requires them. Check variable spelling and whether Continue inherits the expected shell environment. A missing key can make a server exit immediately, which appears as a connection failure rather than an empty list.
Working directory
Use cwd when the server expects to find a project file, virtual environment, or relative path. An entry can be syntactically correct yet fail because its process starts in an IDE directory instead of the project directory.

Use a full executable path when necessary
On macOS, Continue documents a workaround for spawn ENAMETOOLONG: replace a short command such as npx with the resolved executable path. Find it in a shell with which npx (or the command you use), then put that full path in command. This addresses a specific process-spawn error; it is not a general remedy for an empty server list.
Configure remote MCP transports correctly
Not every MCP server is a local process. Continue’s reference documents stdio, sse, and streamable-http transport forms. A remote entry uses the server’s URL and any transport-specific request options rather than a local executable.

Use the transport documented by the server owner. A URL alone cannot turn a stdio process into a remote service, and adding a URL to a command-only entry will not repair its launch path.
Reload Continue and test the entry
- Save the YAML or JSON file with valid syntax.
- Return to the workspace and configuration you confirmed earlier.
- Switch to Agent mode.
- Reload the Continue extension or restart the IDE if the client does not refresh the server list automatically.
- Look for the server entry before attempting a tool call. If it is absent, keep investigating discovery and structure; if it is present, move to process or transport diagnostics.
Testing one server at a time makes failures attributable. Temporarily remove additional entries if several start simultaneously and their logs are difficult to distinguish.
Read the right logs when an entry is present but fails
Continue recommends log inspection as a first troubleshooting step. In VS Code, open Developer Tools and read the Console. In JetBrains IDEs, inspect ~/.continue/logs/core.log. Reproduce the failure immediately before reading the log so the latest process and transport messages are easy to identify.

Make configuration reliable across machines
Pin what must not change
Example entries that use a package tag such as @latest can change behavior when the package publishes a new release. For a repeatable team setup, follow the server’s instructions for a supported version and record the runtime and package requirements in the project.

Use environment variables or your organization’s secret-management method instead of committing API keys to a workspace configuration. Check file permissions and IDE account ownership when a server works in a shell but not in Continue.
Set a sensible timeout
Continue exposes an optional connection timeout. A value that is too short rejects a slow but healthy startup; a value that is too long makes a dead endpoint appear frozen. Choose it according to the server’s documented startup and network behavior, then use logs to distinguish timeout from authentication or process-exit errors.
Check resource and network blockers
Corporate proxies, VPN policies, firewalls, certificate stores, and restricted subprocess execution can affect remote and local servers differently. Compare a manual launch and a direct URL check from the same user account and machine as the IDE. Do not treat a successful test in another shell or on another computer as proof that Continue can reach the server.

When to stop editing the file
If the server is still absent after confirming Agent mode, the active configuration, the workspace path, and the required metadata, the problem is discovery or parsing rather than the server runtime. If the entry is visible and the logs show a spawn, authentication, timeout, or transport error, leave the structure alone and fix that specific launch condition. This distinction prevents repeated YAML changes from masking an installation or network problem.

Why does a server work in my terminal but not in the IDE?

What does the connection timeout control?
It limits how long Continue waits while establishing the MCP connection. It does not install the server, correct credentials, or repair an invalid endpoint.
