Netflix error 40104 usually means an iPhone or iPad cannot connect to Netflix well enough to start playback. First, try another title and switch to a reliable private Wi‑Fi network. If that does not help, restart the device, then reinstall Netflix as a last step—reinstalling deletes downloaded videos and signs you out.
Netflix’s official 40104 guidance is specifically for iPhone and iPad; the code does not automatically mean Netflix is down, your account is broken, or the title has been removed.
What Netflix error 40104 means
The full message is: “Cannot play title. Please try again later. (40104)”.
Netflix associates this error with a network-connectivity problem that prevents an iPhone or iPad from reaching Netflix. The code alone does not identify one universal cause. It may involve the current Wi‑Fi network, a public or managed network restriction, cellular or hotspot performance, local device connectivity, or the Netflix app.

Netflix’s dedicated troubleshooting instructions cover iPhone and iPad. If you see a similar problem on Android, a smart TV, streaming stick, game console, or desktop browser, use the troubleshooting instructions for that device and its displayed error code instead.

Try these checks before reinstalling Netflix
- Play another title. This tells you whether playback fails everywhere or only with one movie or episode.
- Try Netflix on another device using the same network. If Netflix fails there too, the network is more likely to be the problem.
- Try the iPhone or iPad on another reliable network. A normal private Wi‑Fi connection is the best comparison.
- Check other apps and websites. If the device cannot connect reliably elsewhere, fix the connection before troubleshooting Netflix.
Public and managed Wi‑Fi
Hotel, café, school, workplace, guest, and other managed networks may block video streaming. Complete any required sign-in page in Safari, then try Netflix again. If the network still fails, ask its administrator whether streaming services are restricted. Reinstalling the app will not remove a network-level block.
Cellular data, hotspots, and satellite internet
Netflix warns that mobile hotspots, cellular connections, and satellite networks may be too slow or unstable for playback even when basic browsing works. Temporarily switch to private Wi‑Fi if possible.

- If Netflix works on Wi‑Fi but not cellular, investigate coverage, congestion, carrier restrictions, data-saving limits, or hotspot limits.
- If Netflix works on cellular but not home Wi‑Fi, investigate the router, ISP, parental controls, content filtering, or custom DNS.
- Do not buy a faster plan or replace your router before testing another network and checking for restrictions.
Restart your iPhone or iPad
A full power-off restart is different from locking the screen or merely swiping Netflix away.
- Press and hold the side button and one volume button until the power-off sliders appear.
- Drag the top slider to turn the device off.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Press and hold the side button, sometimes labeled the Sleep/Wake button on older devices, to turn the device on.
- Open Netflix and try the title again.
Reinstall the Netflix app
If the network works and restarting did not help, reinstall Netflix using this path:
- Go to the Home Screen and touch and hold the Netflix app.
- Tap Remove App.
- Tap Delete App, then Delete.
- Open the App Store and search for Netflix.
- Tap the cloud/download icon.
- Open Netflix, sign in again, and retry playback.

Check VPN, proxy, and custom network settings
The dedicated 40104 article does not say that VPNs cause this error. However, if your iPhone or iPad uses a VPN, proxy, privacy service, antivirus VPN, or custom DNS configuration, temporarily disable it and test Netflix again.
Do not install a VPN as a fix. Netflix documents VPN-related playback and location problems separately, including for error 40103. Its separate guidance also describes using Fast.com’s expanded information to check whether the detected client country matches your actual location when VPN interference is suspected. That test is not a confirmed diagnostic for every 40104 case.

If other titles play normally, the problem may be limited to that title or its playback data rather than the whole device, account, or network. Avoid factory-resetting the iPhone or repeatedly reinstalling Netflix.
Test another episode or title first. If the same title continues to fail, Netflix’s broader playback guidance allows you to report a problematic title through Viewing Activity by selecting Report a Problem. Use another title temporarily while Netflix investigates.

These are practical diagnostic interpretations, not additional meanings that Netflix assigns to error 40104.
When to contact your ISP or network administrator
Contact the network administrator or internet provider when:
- Other devices cannot stream on the same connection.
- Netflix works on another network but consistently fails at home.
- Your network uses parental controls, content filtering, enterprise security, or custom DNS.
- The connection is unstable or slower than Netflix’s recommended speeds.
- Restarting the router and testing another network do not help.
Netflix’s 40104 guidance recommends checking whether a private connection is slower than its recommended speeds and contacting the provider when necessary. It does not specify one universal minimum speed for this error.

Contact Netflix if reinstalling does not resolve the error, multiple titles fail on a known-good private network, the same account fails across supported devices, or one title remains unavailable after you report it.
Contact Apple or the device manufacturer if the App Store cannot install or update Netflix, the iPhone or iPad has broader Wi‑Fi or cellular problems, or the device cannot maintain a connection for other apps.
Do not factory-reset the device, change your subscription, replace the router, or assume Netflix is globally down solely because 40104 appears. Test the title and network first.
