If a shared link has no useful title, description, or image, first check the HTML your website actually delivers—not just the values saved in a CMS. Open Graph metadata belongs in the document’s <head>. Add or correct the four required properties—og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url—then validate the live page with the debugger for the platform where you plan to share it.
What to check first
A missing preview field does not always mean that every Open Graph tag is absent. The page may have no tags, malformed tags, tags with the wrong page’s values, or tags that are saved in a field but do not make it into the HTML a crawler receives. A platform may also reject or ignore an image that fails its own requirements.
Start with the exact URL you are sharing, including whether it uses a trailing slash, a canonical redirect, or a particular page path. Inspect its delivered HTML and compare the values in the head with the page. Then use the target platform’s debugger, if available, to see what it parses. This separates a website publishing problem from a platform-specific preview issue.
Which Open Graph tags are required?
The Open Graph Protocol specifies four required properties for each page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. They are expressed as meta elements in the document head. The Open Graph Protocol documentation describes og:url as the object’s canonical URL and permanent ID.

| Property | What to put in it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
og:title |
The title of the specific page being shared. | It should identify this page, not repeat a site-wide default when the page has its own title. |
og:type |
The type of object represented by the page. | Use an appropriate type value; website is shown in the protocol’s basic example. |
og:image |
The URL of an image that represents the page. | Use an absolute image URL and check that the image is suitable for the target platform. |
og:url |
The intended canonical URL of the page. | Check that it points to the canonical page, not a different page or an unintended URL variant. |
og:description is optional in the protocol but generally recommended. Add it when you want a concise, page-specific description in the share preview. og:site_name is another optional property. Do not mistake recommended optional metadata for one of the four required properties.
Inspect the HTML that visitors and crawlers receive
Check the published page, not just the editor
Open the exact public page and inspect its page source, or fetch the HTML it returns. Search for og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Confirm that each appears in the document head and that its content value describes the page being shared. If the tag exists only in a CMS input field and not in the delivered HTML, the crawler cannot use that input directly.
For a quick command-line check, retrieve the page response and search its source:

curl -L "https://example.com/page/" -o page.html
grep -i 'og:title|og:type|og:image|og:url' page.html
Replace the example URL with the exact live page. This is a source inspection, not proof that every social platform can fetch the page or accept the image. If the markup is assembled by client-side JavaScript, a plain HTTP response may not show the same final DOM as a browser; compare the source with the rendered page and use the target platform’s debugger to validate what it parses.
Check syntax and values
Open Graph examples use property="og:..." and a content attribute. Check that the property name is spelled correctly, the value is inside the content attribute, and the tag is in the head. A tag with an empty value, a typo, or a URL belonging to another page can be present in source and still fail to produce the preview you intend.
Add or correct the tags
Use this minimal head template
Place the tags in the page head, replacing every example value with a page-accurate one:

This is an illustrative template, not code tested against a particular CMS or site. Do not paste it as a second set of tags if your theme or SEO system already generates them. First find which component owns the page head, then correct its output so that you have one clear set of page-appropriate values.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix the right layer for your site
- CMS with social metadata fields: Check the page’s social or sharing metadata fields and confirm the live page output changes when you update them.
- CMS using a theme or SEO plugin: Identify whether the theme or plugin generates the tags. Avoid configuring both to emit competing values.
- Custom site: Update the shared document template or page metadata component. Populate values from that page’s title, canonical URL, and representative image rather than repeating one global value across unrelated pages.
The exact control names and steps depend on the CMS, theme, or application. The key requirement is the resulting HTML: page-specific Open Graph meta elements in the head. If you do not know which component is generating them, compare the live source before and after changing one setting, or ask the site maintainer which template owns the head.
Choose an image that can work in the preview
Use an image URL that is absolute and intended to represent the page. A relative path such as /images/share.jpg does not state the full image URL in the tag; use the complete URL instead. Then test the published page in the target platform’s debugger rather than assuming that a syntactically correct tag guarantees the crawler can retrieve the image.

Platform rules are not interchangeable. LinkedIn says developers should ensure their source complies with Open Graph and also meets LinkedIn’s image requirements. Having all four basic tags therefore does not establish that a LinkedIn preview satisfies every image constraint; consult LinkedIn’s sharing guidance for a LinkedIn-targeted share.
Google’s image guidance notes that page content and metadata can influence where and how an image appears in Google results, and cautions against a generic image such as a site logo in og:image. This is image-selection guidance, not a promise that Open Graph tags control every Google image display. See Google Search Central’s image documentation.
Validate the fix on the platform you care about
- Publish the metadata correction and load the live page again.
- Inspect the returned source or rendered HTML to confirm the updated tags are in the head and the values match the page.
- Open the target platform’s official sharing or object debugger, when one is available, and submit the exact URL you intend to share.
- Review the fields the tool reports, including the image, and correct any remaining problems in your page output.
- Run the debugger again after a correction to check the result it currently reads.
The Open Graph Protocol page identifies Facebook’s Object Debugger as an official parser and debugger; it is a useful validation target for Facebook sharing. See the Open Graph Protocol site. A debugger for one service does not establish that another service will display the same preview. Platform behavior and refresh procedures can differ, so do not rely on a particular waiting period or URL trick as a guaranteed cache refresh.

If you also need a visual record of how the published page renders, ScreenshotNeo can return a page screenshot or PDF with one GET request. A screenshot is useful for checking visible layout, but it does not inspect or repair Open Graph metadata; use the page source and platform debugger above for that.
For example, save a WebP screenshot of the page with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page/ -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and whether a capture was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No title, description, or image appears. | The tags may be absent from the delivered head, malformed, empty, or not emitted by the CMS setting you changed. | Inspect the live source for the four required properties, correct the output, and submit the page to the target debugger. |
| The preview shows another page’s title or URL. | A site-wide default or shared template may be supplying values for every page. | Generate title and canonical URL values from the specific page, then verify the live output. |
| The image is missing or unsuitable. | The image URL may be wrong or unavailable to the platform, or the image may not meet that platform’s requirements. | Check the absolute image URL and use the target service’s debugger and image guidance. For LinkedIn, consult its additional image requirements. |
| The tags appear in the editor but not in source. | The edited field may not be connected to the template or metadata component serving the page. | Identify the component that generates the head and confirm the published response after changing it. |
| The source looks correct but the share preview is still old. | The platform may be showing previously fetched data, or it may parse the page differently from your source inspection. | Recheck the live URL and run the platform’s debugger. Exact cache duration and refresh steps are platform-specific and are not established here. |
| A plain HTTP fetch does not show tags visible in a browser. | The page may add or alter markup through client-side rendering. | Compare the response source with the rendered document and let the target platform’s debugger show what it parses. |
FAQ
Do I need og:description for Open Graph compliance?
No. The protocol lists four required basic properties; it describes og:description as optional and generally recommended.
Will adding Open Graph tags guarantee a Google image result?
No. Google describes metadata as one influence on image display, not a guarantee that a particular tag controls every image result.
Can a screenshot confirm that my meta tags are correct?
No. A screenshot shows rendered appearance, not the metadata values in the document head. Inspect the HTML and validate it with the relevant platform’s debugger.
