If a React-generated PDF drops accented letters, symbols, or non-Latin text, register a TrueType (TTF) font that contains those characters before writing text. jsPDF’s 14 standard PDF fonts are limited to the ASCII code page; UTF-8 text needs a custom font with the required glyphs. The essential order is to load the font data, add it to jsPDF’s virtual file system, register its family and style, select it, and then write the text.
First determine whether the problem is font coverage or registration
Reproduce the issue with a small export containing the exact characters that fail—not just an English sample. Include the punctuation, accented letters, currency symbols, or language-specific characters that users report. If ordinary ASCII text appears but non-ASCII characters are missing or garbled, suspect the PDF font’s glyph coverage before investigating React CSS or browser font styling. A font can be registered correctly and still lack the glyph for a particular character.
jsPDF’s documentation says its 14 standard PDF fonts have ASCII-codepage limits and advises integrating a custom font that supplies the needed glyphs for UTF-8 output. It also cautions that unsupported glyphs can appear garbled. The fix is therefore two-part: choose a TTF that covers the actual text, then ensure jsPDF has loaded and selected that font when it writes the PDF.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a font and an integration route
Use a TTF file that includes every character your export needs, as well as the styles you intend to use. Check coverage against representative real content, and review the font’s license and redistribution terms before embedding it in an application or generated PDFs. A family name alone does not guarantee that every script or symbol is present.

The jsPDF project documents two ways to make font data available:
| Route | Where the font data lives | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Converter-generated JavaScript | The converter produces a JavaScript file containing base64 font data and jsPDF registration code. | Import the generated module into the application bundle so its registration code runs before the export needs the font. This can be convenient when the same font is reused. |
| Load and register the TTF at runtime | The application loads the TTF content and passes it to jsPDF. | Make sure loading has completed before creating text that uses the font. This route can fit applications that already manage font assets or load them on demand. |
The documentation describes both approaches but does not establish a performance or bundle-size winner. Choose based on how your app serves assets, when the font is needed, and how you want to package it; test the built application rather than assuming a development-only import is sufficient.
Register a TTF in a React jsPDF export
Install and import jsPDF as you would another third-party library. The project README shows the named import import { jsPDF } from "jspdf";. The example below assumes myFont is already available as a binary string containing the TTF file’s data. Obtain that data through the documented font converter or load it using an asset-loading approach appropriate to your bundler.

import { jsPDF } from "jspdf";
export function downloadPdf(myFont) {
const doc = new jsPDF();
// Add the TTF bytes to jsPDF's virtual file system.
doc.addFileToVFS("MyFont.ttf", myFont);
// Register the filename under a family name and style.
doc.addFont("MyFont.ttf", "MyFont", "normal");
// Select the registered family before writing text.
doc.setFont("MyFont", "normal");
doc.text("Text with the required glyphs: café — 東京", 10, 10);
doc.save("export.pdf");
}
Replace the sample string with the characters your export actually needs, and replace the example family and filename consistently if you use different names. The sequence is significant: the font data must be available, its filename/family/style registered, and that family selected before the relevant text call. Registering a font does not add missing glyphs to the TTF.
Using the converter-generated module
The jsPDF font converter accepts a TTF and generates JavaScript with embedded font data and registration code. Add that generated file to the React project and import it on the code path that creates the PDF, following the generated module’s intended usage. The converter implementation uses an addFonts event to add the file to the virtual file system and register its family/style. Confirm the module is included in the deployed bundle and runs before your export writes text; an unimported generated file cannot register the font.
Loading the TTF at runtime
If your application loads the font separately, wait until the TTF content has been obtained and converted into the binary string expected by the registration calls. Then call addFileToVFS, addFont, and setFont before writing text. Keep this ordering inside the actual export flow, particularly if loading is asynchronous, so the PDF cannot be generated while the font is still unavailable.

Verify the result in the deployed React build
- Export a focused test. Include the exact failing text and save a small PDF. Check that the export path selects the custom family before writing it.
- Check the registration names. The filename passed to
addFontmust match the VFS filename, and the family and style passed tosetFontmust match the registered family and style. - Check the font’s glyph coverage. If only certain characters fail, verify that the TTF has glyphs for those specific characters. Registration cannot compensate for absent glyphs.
- Test the production build. Verify the generated font module or runtime asset is bundled or loaded in the same deployed code path that calls the PDF export.
- Open the PDF in the viewer used by your audience. If it fails only in one viewer, compare the same file in another viewer before attributing the fault to a viewer-specific issue.
React and bundler considerations
jsPDF can be imported in React like another third-party library. Its README separately notes that Create React App externals can be configured with react-app-rewired or by ejecting. That note is about external configuration, not the custom-font registration procedure; changing externals is not the first remedy for missing glyphs.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no single font-asset recipe established here for every React framework or bundler. If the font works during local development but not after deployment, inspect whether the registration module is imported by the export path and whether the production bundler resolves and includes the font asset. Also compare the installed jsPDF version with the API and type declarations in that project. jsPDF provides TypeScript typings, but that alone does not establish compatibility for every release or plugin declaration.
Troubleshooting missing or garbled text
- Nothing changes after calling
setFont: Confirm that the VFS filename, registered family, and style agree across the registration and selection calls. Check that font data is loaded before the export runs. - Some characters work and others disappear: Inspect the TTF’s coverage for the exact failing characters. Select a font that includes those glyphs; a successful registration only proves the font was made available, not that it contains every requested character.
- The generated converter file works locally but not in production: Ensure the export code imports the generated file and that the build includes it. Check asset/module resolution in your bundler’s production configuration.
- TypeScript flags a method: Check the installed jsPDF version and the type declarations resolved by the project. The existence of jsPDF typings does not establish that every release or plugin declaration has identical type coverage.
- One PDF viewer renders the file differently: Compare the exported file in another viewer and recheck registration and glyph coverage. Viewer-specific behavior is not established as a universal cause or fix, so treat the viewer and its environment as variables to isolate.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The documented guidance does not provide benchmarks comparing embedded converter modules with runtime font loading, nor does it establish a universally faster option. The operational reliability requirement is clearer: the font bytes must be available and registration must have completed before the export writes text. Test this timing in the deployed build, especially if font loading happens asynchronously.

Embedding a TTF also makes font choice a licensing and distribution concern. Confirm that the font’s terms permit the way your app packages and embeds it. For reliability, include a representative multilingual or symbol-heavy test string in your export checks and verify the resulting PDF in the viewers that matter to your users.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing a React component’s CSS font fix missing characters in a jsPDF PDF?
Not by itself. The exported PDF needs jsPDF to use a registered font containing the characters being written; browser CSS font styling is a separate concern.
Can I register a font once and use it for several PDF documents?
The documented registration calls operate on a jsPDF document instance. If you create a new document for an export, make sure that document has the font data registered before using it.
