Start by restarting Windows. If Office setup still hangs on “Getting Things Ready,” run Microsoft’s Office setup troubleshooter. If an older or damaged installation is blocking setup, use Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter (where supported), restart, then reinstall from the Microsoft account or work/school portal that owns the license. If the online download repeatedly stalls, try Microsoft’s offline installer.
The message is a generic setup status, not a diagnosis. The steps below apply to a stalled Office installation, update, repair, or uninstall on Windows—not to Word or Excel merely hanging when you open the app.
Before you stop setup
Office may show “Getting Things Ready” while downloading or staging Click-to-Run files, checking for an existing installation, updating or repairing components, or waiting for another Office process. A slow or unstable connection, security software, a proxy, a conflicting installation, or another update may also be involved. The message alone does not identify the cause.

There is no reliable universal wait time. Avoid opening more installers while one is running; competing setup processes can make it harder to tell what is happening. If the screen remains unchanged and there is no meaningful activity, move on to a restart. Microsoft also advises waiting briefly and restarting when Office appears busy or blocked (Microsoft’s Office busy guidance).

1. Restart Windows and retry once
- Close the installer if Windows lets you do so normally.
- Close any open Office apps, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Restart Windows.
- After signing in, do not open an Office app first. Start setup once from the official Microsoft account page or your organization’s portal.
A restart can clear a process left behind by an interrupted installation, update, repair, or removal. Do not delete Office folders or registry entries at this stage.
2. Run Microsoft’s setup troubleshooter
Microsoft’s current setup troubleshooter runs through Get Help and requires Windows 10 or later. Use it on the same PC that has the stalled installation:
- Open Microsoft’s Troubleshoot installing Office page.
- Select the Microsoft 365 setup troubleshooter.
- If Windows asks whether the site can open Get Help, select Open.
- Follow the prompts and restart if asked.
- Retry the installation from the correct Microsoft or organization account.
If the troubleshooter completes successfully, setup should be able to proceed without the earlier blocked state. If it reports a problem it cannot fix, note the message before continuing or contacting support.

3. Remove an old installation only if it is blocking setup
Use Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter if Office still appears installed, a previous update was interrupted, setup says Office is busy, or repair will not start. The tool can remove Microsoft 365 and Office 2016, 2019, and 2021 on Windows 10 or later. Microsoft says the current troubleshooter cannot uninstall Office 2024. If you have Office 2024, do not assume this tool will remove it; use Microsoft’s current product-specific guidance or contact support.
- Open the same Microsoft troubleshooting page and select Uninstall.
- Allow the link to open Get Help, choose the relevant Office product, and follow the removal prompts.
- Restart Windows when removal is complete.
- Reinstall from the account or portal associated with the license.
Uninstalling Office does not usually mean you need to buy it again. It does mean you may need to sign in and activate the suite again. Do not delete Outlook data files or profiles just because setup is stuck; removing Office and deleting mailbox data are different actions.
4. Reinstall from the account that owns the license
- Personal purchase or subscription: sign in to the Microsoft account originally associated with Office, then choose the appropriate Install option.
- Work or school license: use the organization’s Microsoft 365 portal or instructions from IT, not a personal account unless your organization directs you to.
Choose the edition and installation offered by that account. If Office is managed by an employer or school, check with IT before removing it: you may not have administrator rights, and organizational security or deployment policies can affect setup.

Check for a 32-bit/64-bit conflict
Do not install 64-bit Office over an existing 32-bit installation, or vice versa. Remove the existing version first, then install the architecture you actually need. If Office still opens, check File > Account > About for its version and architecture. If it does not open, check Windows’ installed-apps list or use Microsoft’s removal guidance. Neither architecture is automatically the right choice for everyone: legacy add-ins, ActiveX controls, compatibility needs, and organizational standards can matter.

Also avoid mixing Microsoft Store, MSI, and Click-to-Run installations without identifying what is already installed. Microsoft’s manual uninstall guidance explains the different installation types.
5. Repair Office if it is installed and the problem is inside an app
If Microsoft 365 or Office appears in Windows and the issue is an app malfunction—not a setup process that never finishes—try repair before uninstalling the suite. Repair applies to the whole Office suite, even when only one app seems faulty.

Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office, select the three-dot menu, then choose Modify.
- Choose Quick Repair first. If it does not resolve the problem, repeat and choose Online Repair.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office, then choose Modify.
- Choose the available repair option and follow the prompts.
For Click-to-Run installations, Quick Repair is faster and replaces detected damaged files; Online Repair is more comprehensive and can reinstall Office components, so it may take longer. MSI-based installations may show a different Repair option. See Microsoft’s Office repair instructions.

An offline installer is worth trying when the online setup repeatedly stops at the same point, the connection is unreliable, or a proxy, firewall, antivirus, or endpoint-security product may be interrupting downloads. Microsoft says its offline installer can bypass some of these connection-related problems; follow the current instructions on the Office installation troubleshooting page.
Use only Microsoft’s official download and account pages. An offline installer reduces reliance on a live download during installation; it will not fix an invalid license or an edition, architecture, or installation-type conflict. Do not permanently disable security software. If your organization permits a controlled test, temporarily change only the relevant protection setting, restore it immediately, and ask IT first on a managed PC.

For administrators: use the Office Deployment Tool when configuration matters
The Office Deployment Tool (ODT) is a command-line tool for downloading and deploying Click-to-Run Office. It is suited to administrators deploying to multiple PCs or controlling product, language, architecture, or update channel—not usually the simplest fix for a home installation. Microsoft’s Download Center lists ODT version 16.0.20131.20090, published July 14, 2026; check the page for the current listing.
This illustrative configuration is not valid for every plan or one-time Office edition. Product ID, license, architecture, language, and channel must match the deployment:

Manual removal is a last resort
Do not start by deleting Office folders, stopping services, removing scheduled tasks, or editing the registry. Microsoft warns that manual removal is lengthy and complex, may require administrator access, and can cause serious problems if done incorrectly. Try the supported troubleshooter first and use Microsoft’s manual uninstall instructions only when you understand the installation type and have a specific reason to proceed.
Manual procedures may involve Click-to-Run, MSI, or Store-specific components, processes, services, scheduled tasks, folders, and registry entries. Commands shown in Microsoft’s legacy instructions are not a universal cleanup script. Do not run them indiscriminately, and back up the registry before any required registry change.
When to contact IT or Microsoft
Escalate instead of repeating setup if the troubleshooter fails, your license is missing from the account that should own it, Windows reports a system-level or Click-to-Run error, the connection repeatedly drops, or the PC is organization-managed. Office 2024 users should also seek current Microsoft guidance if removal is needed, since the current uninstall troubleshooter does not support that edition. If you use Office 2016 or 2019, note that Microsoft states support for both ended on October 14, 2025; consult Microsoft’s current product information before relying on them for ongoing support.
