First check whether uvx is installed; then configure the client to use its full executable path, or correct the environment the client inherits. Quit and relaunch the desktop client after changing the installation, PATH, or server configuration.
What “spawn uvx ENOENT” means
ENOENT is an operating-system error indicating that the process trying to start a program could not locate the requested executable. If an MCP configuration says "command": "uvx", the client must be able to resolve that command from its own PATH. If it cannot, the server process never starts, so this error generally points to command discovery rather than an MCP protocol failure.
This distinction matters because uvx can work in a terminal and still be unavailable to a desktop app. A terminal may load shell-profile settings that add the executable’s directory to PATH; a graphical client may start with a different, smaller environment. An issue report for Claude Desktop described uvx working in the terminal while a configuration using the bare command failed. Electron-based clients may likewise omit shell additions such as /opt/homebrew/bin.
Check whether uvx is installed and find its path
Use the lookup command for your operating system. Run it in the same user account that runs the MCP client.

| Operating system | Command | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| macOS | which uvx |
A full path, for example /Users/your-name/.local/bin/uvx |
| Windows | where uvx |
A full path ending in uvx.exe |
| Linux | which uvx |
A full path returned by the shell’s command lookup |
If the command prints a path, copy that exact result. Do not assume the example path applies to your machine: installations can differ, and macOS may report a user-local or Homebrew location. If the command returns no path, the shell cannot find uvx either. Install uv using the method appropriate for your operating system, then run the lookup again.
Before editing the MCP configuration, verify that the discovered file can run. In a terminal, invoke the path directly with --version, for example:
/Users/your-name/.local/bin/uvx --version
On Windows, quote a path if it contains spaces:
"C:pathtolocalbinuvx.exe" --version
A version response confirms that the executable at that path can be invoked from the terminal. It does not by itself prove the desktop client will find a bare uvx command; using the resolved full path in the configuration avoids relying on that lookup.
Fix the MCP configuration with an absolute path
Replace the bare command name with the complete executable path returned by your lookup. Keep the server’s arguments as they are unless you have a separate reason to change them. For example, a macOS configuration might look like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"fetch": {
"command": "/Users/your-name/.local/bin/uvx",
"args": ["mcp-server-fetch"]
}
}
}
The server name and package argument above are an example configuration; retain the values for the MCP server you actually intend to launch. On Windows, use the path reported by where uvx, with JSON backslashes escaped or written as forward slashes. For example:
{
"mcpServers": {
"fetch": {
"command": "C:\path\to\local\bin\uvx.exe",
"args": ["mcp-server-fetch"]
}
}
}
Use the actual path from your system, not the illustrative C:pathtolocalbinuvx.exe. After saving valid JSON, fully quit the desktop client and reopen it. Merely closing a window may leave the process running, depending on the client; the important point is to start a fresh process so it reads the edited configuration.

Choose between an absolute path and fixing PATH
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Set command to the absolute uvx path |
A single machine, or a client that does not inherit shell PATH settings | Explicit and direct, but the path is machine-specific and may need updating if the executable moves. |
| Make the executable directory available in the client’s PATH | Setups where the client reliably inherits a configured environment | Can be more portable across configurations, but depends on how the client is launched and which environment settings it receives. |
For a quick diagnosis, prefer the absolute path: it removes ambiguity about which executable the client should start. If you maintain a setup across multiple machines, a PATH-based configuration may be easier to maintain, but verify that the desktop client actually receives the relevant PATH. On macOS, Homebrew directories such as /opt/homebrew/bin may be present in an interactive shell but absent from an Electron app’s environment. The path returned by which uvx is more useful than guessing a Homebrew location.
Platform-specific checks
macOS
- Run
which uvxin Terminal and copy the returned path. - If there is no result, install
uvusing your chosen macOS installation method and repeat the lookup. - Run the resolved path with
--versionto confirm it starts. - Put that full path in the MCP server’s
commandfield, save the JSON, and relaunch the client.
If the lookup returns a path under ~/.local/bin or a Homebrew directory, use the expanded full path rather than a literal tilde unless the client explicitly supports shell expansion. A process launcher may treat the command as a program path, not as text to pass through your shell.
Windows
- Run
where uvxin Command Prompt or a compatible terminal. - Copy the path to the executable, usually ending in
.exe. - Test that executable with
--version. - Use that path in the MCP JSON, taking care to escape backslashes, then restart the client.
If where uvx finds more than one result, use the one that runs successfully and corresponds to the installation you intend to use. The client needs a valid executable path, not simply a directory name.
Linux
The same command-discovery principle applies: use which uvx, test the returned path, and configure the MCP client with that full path if it does not inherit the shell environment. This is the general PATH remedy; the available platform-specific guidance here does not establish a separate Linux-specific installation recipe.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The lookup command returns nothing
Likely cause: uvx is not installed for this user, or its directory is not on the terminal’s PATH. Fix: install uv using an appropriate method for your operating system, open a new terminal if needed, and repeat which uvx or where uvx. Do not edit the MCP configuration to point to a path you have not confirmed exists.
The command works in Terminal but the MCP client still reports ENOENT
Likely cause: the GUI process has a different PATH from the interactive shell. Fix: replace "uvx" with the full path returned by the lookup, save the JSON, and completely relaunch the client. If you instead choose to adjust PATH, ensure the client is launched in an environment that receives that setting; a shell-profile change alone may not affect an already-running graphical app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The absolute path still fails
Likely cause: the configured path is mistyped, points to a file that has moved, or is not the executable that succeeded in the terminal. Fix: rerun the lookup, copy the result exactly, and invoke that exact path with --version. On Windows, include the .exe filename and ensure JSON backslashes are escaped. Restart after correcting the configuration.
The error changes after fixing command discovery
If the client now starts a process but reports a different error, the original executable lookup problem may be resolved and the next failure may involve a different part of startup. Check the new error on its own rather than continuing to change PATH or the executable path without evidence. This guide’s diagnosis addresses failure to find uvx; it does not establish the cause of other server-startup errors.
A Node-based MCP server reports “spawn npx ENOENT”
This is the analogous command-discovery problem for npx: the process cannot find npx on PATH. npx is included with Node.js. Confirm its location and, if the GUI client cannot resolve the bare command, configure the absolute path to npx instead. The same kind of GUI-versus-shell environment mismatch can affect bare npx, uvx, or uv.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ENOENT mean the MCP server package is broken?
Not necessarily. For this error, the process cannot locate the configured executable; the server may not have been launched at all.
Should I use a path beginning with a tilde in the MCP JSON?
Use the full path returned by your command lookup rather than assuming the client expands ~.
