“MCP Client Closed” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Open Cursor’s Output panel, select MCP Logs, and inspect the error immediately before the closure. Then troubleshoot that earlier failure: a missing executable, invalid configuration, unavailable environment variable, authentication problem, timeout, or server crash. The right fix depends on the server’s transport and the environment where it is launched.
What “MCP Client Closed” means
The message tells you that Cursor’s connection to an MCP server has closed; by itself, it does not explain why. The useful evidence is usually the preceding log entry. Cursor says MCP Logs include server initialization, tool calls, and errors, including connection, authentication, and server-crash problems. Start there rather than changing runtimes or copying a workaround before identifying the failure.
Think of diagnosis along four axes: where startup or connection failed, whether the server uses local stdio or a remote endpoint, which machine or runtime is involved, and whether the exact configured command also fails outside Cursor.

- Transport: local stdio process or remote endpoint.
- Execution environment: Cursor’s host, WSL, an SSH machine, or another runtime.
- Reproducibility: whether the same command and arguments fail in a terminal too.
Start with MCP Logs
- Open Cursor’s Output panel and choose MCP Logs.
- Find the full error immediately before “Client closed,” not just the final closure line.
- Record whether the preceding message indicates an executable lookup failure, authentication issue, timeout, configuration problem, or server exit.
- Note the server name and whether the configured server is local stdio or remote. The next checks differ by transport.
Cursor’s MCP documentation identifies the log workflow and describes the log as a place to inspect initialization, tool calls, and errors. If the panel shows no useful detail, confirm you have selected MCP Logs rather than relying on a status indicator alone.

Check which MCP configuration Cursor is using
Cursor documents project-level configuration at .cursor/mcp.json and global configuration at ~/.cursor/mcp.json. Its help page says both are merged, with the project entry taking precedence when server names conflict. Check both locations if a server behaves differently between projects or a global entry seems to be ignored.
For a stdio server, Cursor’s documented configuration fields include command, args, env, and envFile. Verify that the active entry has the intended server name, command, argument array, and environment settings. A typo or a stale duplicate entry can make Cursor launch something other than the command you tested.
Fix local stdio launch failures
Confirm the executable is available to Cursor
Look for errors such as spawn python ENOENT. ENOENT in this context is an example of a process-spawn failure: Cursor could not find the executable it was asked to start. It does not prove that every “Client closed” error is a PATH problem.

- Check that the configured
commandis spelled correctly and is installed in the environment where Cursor starts the server. - If Cursor cannot resolve the executable by name, configure its full path where appropriate.
- Check that each item in
argsis a separate argument in the configured array, and that the arguments match the server’s launch command. - For Windows, WSL, SSH, or a remote workspace, verify the executable on the machine or runtime that actually launches the process—not only on your usual terminal host.
A community help report describes spawn python ENOENT before a client closure. Treat it as a diagnostic example, not as evidence that installing Python or changing PATH will solve unrelated cases.
Compare environment variables and runtime settings
Cursor’s stdio configuration supports environment values through env and envFile. Check that required tokens and other settings are present in the configuration Cursor uses, and that the file path is valid in the launch environment. Avoid putting secrets into logs or sharing an unredacted configuration when asking for help.
A terminal and Cursor do not necessarily inherit the same PATH, npm settings, runtime, working context, or remote environment. One reported case was resolved by correcting a difference between user-level and project-level npm registry configuration. That example shows why environment comparison matters; it is not a universal explanation for this message.

Run the exact configured command outside Cursor
- Copy the configured command and arguments from the active MCP entry.
- Run that command in a terminal that represents the same machine and runtime as closely as possible.
- Read any startup output or error, and check whether the process exits immediately.
- If it works there but not in Cursor, compare the environments rather than treating terminal success as proof that the Cursor launch is valid.
Terminal reproduction can expose a server-side startup error. A successful terminal run narrows the problem but does not establish that Cursor can resolve the same executable, read the same environment values, or use the same npm configuration.
For remote endpoints, authentication, and timeouts
If the preceding log points to authentication or a remote connection, focus on the endpoint’s credentials and reachability rather than changing a local stdio command. Confirm that the configured credentials are available in the intended environment and that they have not expired or been omitted. Do not paste access tokens into a support post.
If the log indicates a timeout, determine whether the server failed to start, took too long to initialize, or lost a later connection. A timeout and a process-spawn error are different failure stages; changing PATH will not address a remote authentication failure, for example. Use the earliest relevant log line to choose the branch.

Windows, WSL, SSH, and remote-workspace cases
In mixed environments, the key question is: where is the MCP process supposed to run? A command installed in Windows may not exist in WSL; a package available on your local computer may not be installed on an SSH host. Check the actual execution environment, its PATH, runtime, and configuration file locations.
Community reports describe environment-specific workarounds and later changes. They are not guarantees for every operating system, Cursor release, or MCP server. Do not apply a blanket wrapper command or reinstall a runtime solely because someone with a different setup reported success. First match the log error to the machine and launch configuration that produced it.

Apply the fix and verify the server
- Correct the specific issue identified by the preceding log line: command resolution, arguments, environment, credentials, configuration, or remote availability.
- Use Cursor’s MCP controls to toggle the affected server or reload it using the controls available in your release.
- Return to MCP Logs and confirm that initialization completes without the earlier error.
- Check that the server is available and, if relevant, that its tools can be called.
Cursor documents toggling servers and checking logs. Exact labels and reload behavior can vary by release, so use the controls currently shown in your installation instead of assuming a particular menu path.

Common errors and what to check
| Log clue | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
Executable not found or spawn … ENOENT |
Process spawn | Confirm the command exists in Cursor’s execution environment; try a full executable path. |
| Server exits during startup | Launch command, arguments, runtime, or server-side startup | Run the exact configured command and arguments in the same environment and inspect the first error. |
| Authentication error | Credentials or their availability to the server | Verify the credential is current and configured for the environment Cursor uses. |
| Timeout or connection failure | Initialization or remote connectivity | Determine whether the failing connection is local or remote and inspect the preceding log lines. |
| Works in terminal, fails in Cursor | Different launch environments or configuration | Compare PATH, runtime, npm settings, environment values, and the active MCP configuration. |
Keep the troubleshooting low-risk
- Change one cause at a time so the next log output tells you whether the fix mattered.
- Keep a copy of the original MCP entry before editing it.
- Redact tokens, cookies, and private endpoint details before sharing configuration or logs.
- Record the Cursor version and whether the server runs locally, in WSL, over SSH, or elsewhere when asking for help; those details affect which environment needs checking.

Does “Client closed” mean Cursor is broken?
No. The message alone does not establish whether the failure is in Cursor, the server, or the launch environment. The preceding MCP log entry is the useful diagnostic evidence.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo to fix a different MCP server’s closure error?
No. ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server; it does not repair another server’s launch or connection configuration.
