There is no single “missing cursor” fix: first determine whether the missing item is Playwright MCP’s visual pointer decoration, coordinate-based mouse movement, or browser automation tools in Cursor. Each points to a different setting or connection problem, and the symptom alone does not establish a universal bug.
First identify what “cursor” means
Before changing settings, identify the client, MCP server, browser, and exact symptom. In this context, “cursor” can describe three different things: an annotation shown during a pointer action, the automation mouse’s ability to move to screenshot coordinates, or Cursor’s browser automation feature itself. Those are not interchangeable.
- A click works, but no pointer mark appears: investigate Playwright MCP’s pointer-action decoration.
- You need to move the mouse to an x/y position, but cannot: check whether the server exposes vision-mode tools.
- You cannot find browser tools in Cursor: establish whether you mean Cursor’s built-in Browser Tab or an external MCP server.
- The browser does not open or attach: treat it as a connection or profile issue, not a cursor-visibility problem.
Record the client and server names, their versions, the browser and profile, what action you attempted, and any exact error. Without those details, it is not possible to identify one root cause reliably.
If the pointer decoration is missing
Microsoft Playwright MCP documents a cursor decoration parameter for pointer actions. Its documented default is pointer; setting it to none disables the decoration. This controls a visual action overlay. It does not, by itself, mean the browser’s mouse cannot move or that a click failed.

Check the arguments or configuration used for the pointer action and look for the cursor value. If you want the decoration, remove an explicit none setting or set the documented value to pointer. If the action is still being performed, but the mark is not drawn, check this decoration setting before changing the browser connection.
Do not assume every MCP server implements this Playwright-specific parameter. If you are using another server, consult its own tool description and configuration instead.
If coordinate-based movement is unavailable
Playwright MCP’s ordinary interaction approach uses structured accessibility snapshots. Coordinate-driven mouse input is a separate method: browser_mouse_move_xy is listed among the tools available in vision mode, enabled with --caps=vision. The coordinates correspond to screenshot pixels, so this is the relevant route when a task specifically requires moving to an x/y location.

- Check the server capability. Confirm that the Playwright MCP server is started with
--caps=visionwhen you need vision-mode tools. - Inspect the tools exposed to the client. Look for
browser_mouse_move_xy. If it is absent, verify the server configuration and whether the client has loaded that server’s tools. - Use coordinates from the current screenshot. A coordinate is meaningful relative to the screenshot being used. Do not substitute an accessibility locator for a task that specifically requires coordinate input, or assume a coordinate tool is necessary for ordinary structured interactions.
- Separate capability from connection. If the tool is available but cannot act on a page, investigate whether the browser is connected and the intended tab is attached.
Enabling vision mode is not a fix for a missing visual decoration, and the decoration setting does not enable coordinate movement. Confirm which capability is missing before altering either one.
If browser automation tools are missing in Cursor
Distinguish Cursor’s built-in Browser Tab from an external MCP server. A Cursor community response dated February 7, 2026 described Browser Tab automation as built-in rather than a separate MCP server, and pointed users who wanted external Chrome control to Playwright MCP. That is a dated community explanation, not a guarantee that every current Cursor version has identical menus or behavior. Check the current product interface and version before following version-specific setup steps.
If you intended to use an external server, verify that the Playwright MCP server is configured in the client and that its tools are available there. A browser feature built into a client and an MCP server configured by the user are different paths; the absence of one does not prove that the other is broken.

For external browser automation, the Playwright MCP project describes browser capabilities through the Model Context Protocol, using structured accessibility snapshots for page interaction. If your task needs a logged-in session or installed browser extensions, select a connection route that can use the relevant existing browser profile rather than expecting a fresh browser context to contain that state.

Playwright MCP documents several connection routes. The right one depends on the browser endpoint available and whether you need to reuse a session. These routes address attachment and browser access; none should be treated as a cursor-visibility fix unless the evidence points to a connection failure.

For the extension route, Playwright MCP attaches by default to the last-used profile that has the extension installed. The documented setup also supports choosing a profile directory. If a task depends on logged-in tabs or installed extensions, confirm that the selected profile is the one containing them; being connected to a browser is not enough if it is the wrong profile.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Name the components. Write down whether you use Cursor Browser Tab, Microsoft Playwright MCP, or another server; also note the browser and client/server versions.
- Describe the missing behavior precisely. Say whether the overlay is absent, x/y movement is unavailable, browser tools are absent from the client, or browser attachment fails.
- For an absent overlay, check decoration. In Playwright MCP pointer-action settings, look for
cursor;nonesuppresses the decoration andpointeris the documented default. - For unavailable coordinates, check capability. Verify vision mode is enabled with
--caps=visionand whetherbrowser_mouse_move_xyis exposed. - For missing Cursor tools, identify the intended product path. Check whether you meant built-in Browser Tab automation or a separately configured external MCP server, then check the current client interface and server configuration.
- For failed attachment, check route and profile. Confirm the channel, CDP endpoint, Playwright endpoint, or extension route matches the browser you intend to control; verify the profile when session state matters.
- Only then consider version-specific recovery. Capture the exact error and client, server, browser, and operating-system versions before trying a downgrade, reinstall, or workaround. The symptom alone does not justify any one of those actions.

The documented settings distinguish decoration from coordinate tools, while the connection guide documents ways to attach to a browser.
