If Hulu shows Loading Error 97, treat it as a general loading or connection failure—not as proof of one specific problem. Hulu’s public Help Center does not clearly define Error 97 or provide a dedicated fix for it. The cause may be a stalled app session, damaged local data, outdated software, a network or location setting, an account issue, a device problem, a title-specific failure, or a temporary Hulu outage.
Use the tests below to find out whether the problem follows your device, home network, account, a particular title, or Hulu itself. Start with the least disruptive fixes.
Quick fixes for Hulu Loading Error 97
- Fully close Hulu, then open it again.
- Restart the affected TV, streaming stick, phone, tablet, computer, or console.
- Try another show or movie.
- Try Hulu on another device or at Hulu.com.
- Update the Hulu app and the device’s operating system.
- Clear Hulu’s cache or app data where the platform allows it.
- Sign out of Hulu and sign back in.
- Uninstall and reinstall Hulu.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, custom DNS, ad blockers, and network filters.
- Test Hulu using a different network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Contact Hulu if the error continues across devices and networks.
Do not factory-reset your TV, Roku, or streaming device at this stage. It erases settings and accounts and is rarely the appropriate first response to a generic loading message.
What does Hulu Error 97 mean?
Hulu does not appear to publish a current, definitive public explanation for Error 97. The safest interpretation is that Hulu could not load or establish a usable connection at that moment. Third-party pages are inconsistent and may discuss Error 97 alongside Error 98, so they should not be treated as official definitions. See the conflicting third-party discussion at TechCult.

That means claims such as “Error 97 always means Hulu’s servers are down” or “it is exclusively a cache problem” are too certain. The diagnostic tests are more useful than the number itself.
1. Find out whether Hulu is down
Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, determine how widely the problem occurs:
- Does Hulu fail on every device in your home?
- Does another Hulu title play?
- Does Hulu work on cellular data or a phone hotspot?
- Do other streaming services work on the same Wi-Fi connection?
- Does Hulu work in a browser but not in the app?
- Does Hulu’s official streaming support page mention a known issue?
If Hulu fails on several devices and networks, repeated reinstalls are unlikely to help. The problem may be account-related or service-side, and Hulu support may need to investigate. Do not assume Hulu is currently down without checking a current status source; outage conditions change.

2. Force-close Hulu and restart the device
Pressing Home may only suspend Hulu in memory. Exit the app completely or use the device’s force-stop control, then launch it again.
Next, use the device’s normal restart command. If it is frozen, disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, and wait for the operating system to finish starting before opening Hulu. Restart phones and computers normally rather than repeatedly killing power, when possible.

3. Try another title, device, and browser
These quick comparisons identify the likely fault:

4. Update Hulu and the device
Open the device’s official app store and install any available Hulu update. Then check for a system update for the TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, phone, tablet, or game console. An update is not necessarily the cause of Error 97, but outdated app and system software can create compatibility problems.
Hulu’s supported device categories include Android and Apple mobile devices, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, selected LG and Samsung TVs, Roku, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and browser access. Compatibility depends on the exact model and platform, so “smart TV” does not automatically mean that every Hulu feature is supported. Hulu lists current device categories and connection requirements on its Hulu + Live TV page.
5. Clear Hulu’s cache or local data
Corrupted temporary data can prevent an app from loading correctly. Menu labels vary by operating-system version, and clearing data may sign you out.
Android phone or tablet
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Select Hulu.
- Tap Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Reopen Hulu.
If that fails, use Clear storage or uninstall and reinstall Hulu. Clearing storage removes the local login session and app settings. Android menu guidance is also described by Android Authority.
Android TV or Google TV
Try Settings → Apps → Hulu → Storage → Clear cache. A Clear data option may be available, but it can remove your sign-in and preferences.

Amazon Fire TV
Try Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Hulu → Clear cache. The exact path can differ between Fire OS releases.

Smart TVs, Roku, and Apple TV
Some smart TVs provide cache or app-reset controls under their Apps or Storage settings. Roku and Apple TV generally do not expose a conventional user-facing cache button. Restarting the device or reinstalling Hulu is usually the practical equivalent.
iPhone or iPad
iOS and iPadOS do not generally offer the same universal cache-clearing control as Android. Force-close Hulu, restart the device, update Hulu through the App Store, and check for an iOS or iPadOS update. If necessary, delete Hulu and reinstall it; you will probably need to sign in again.
6. Reinstall Hulu
Reinstalling is useful when the app installation or local data is damaged, but do it after testing another title and device. It will not fix a Hulu-wide outage or a router that is blocking the service.
- Uninstall Hulu from the affected device.
- Restart the device if the platform permits it.
- Install Hulu again from the official app store.
- Open Hulu and sign in.

7. Check your network
A speed test alone does not prove that Wi-Fi is stable, DNS is functioning, Hulu domains are reachable, or a router filter is not blocking part of the service. Network problems are especially likely when Hulu fails on multiple devices connected to the same home network but works elsewhere.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Wait until the connection is fully restored.
- Move the streaming device closer to the router or connect it by Ethernet.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and game updates.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy.
- Temporarily restore DNS to automatic settings.
- Temporarily disable network-level ad blocking, filtering, or firewall rules for testing.
- Try Hulu on a phone hotspot or another trusted network.
Restore any security or filtering tool after the test. Do not buy a VPN or permanently disable security software as a fix. A VPN can make Hulu less reliable by triggering location or proxy checks. Hulu also lists location and home-network topics among its support subjects.
Hulu states that Hulu + Live TV requires a supported device and a high-speed internet connection, but that statement does not establish a universal speed threshold specifically for Error 97. Secondary loading guides discuss cache, DNS, Wi-Fi quality, and bandwidth as possible factors, but their speed figures should not be treated as official Hulu requirements. On a computer, try Hulu in a private or incognito window. If it works there, an extension or stored site data is a likely contributor.

- Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy tools, VPN extensions, and script blockers.
- Clear cookies and site data for Hulu rather than deleting all browser data immediately.
- Update the browser.
- Try another supported browser.
- Compare the browser result with the Hulu app on another device.
If Hulu works in the browser but not on a TV app, focus on the TV, app installation, or TV-side network path. If it fails in both places, investigate the account, network, and Hulu service.

9. Check the account and active streams
Error 97 is not established as a screen-limit code, but account conditions can still affect loading. Check whether:
- You recently changed the Hulu password.
- The subscription or billing status changed.
- The device was removed, replaced, or reactivated.
- Several people are streaming simultaneously.
- The account works on another device.
Sign out and back in after a password or plan change. If the account fails across multiple devices while other Hulu accounts work normally, ask Hulu to check authentication, entitlement, and device-registration information.
10. What if only one show or episode fails?
Play another episode of the same series, then try a different show or movie. Test the affected title on another device and try again later.
If everything else plays, the problem may be limited to that title, episode, live channel, or a temporary content-delivery issue. Reinstalling the entire app may not resolve a Hulu-side title problem.
When to contact Hulu
Contact Hulu through its official streaming support page when Error 97 remains after restarting and reinstalling, or when the account fails on multiple devices and networks. Hulu advertises live help through its support flow.
Have this information ready:
- The complete error message, not just the number 97.
- The device model and operating-system version.
- The Hulu app version, if visible.
- Whether every title fails or only one.
- Whether Hulu works on another device, browser, or network.
- The troubleshooting steps already attempted.
- The approximate date and time the error occurred.
Avoid third-party “Hulu support” phone numbers or paid repair services. Use Hulu’s official Help Center.
