If a Slack link will not open, first copy it and try it in your regular browser. If it fails there too, the problem is probably the destination, your connection, or an access requirement—not Slack’s click handler. If the copied link works, restart and update Slack, clear its cache, then check your browser settings and any company security policies. A missing preview is a separate issue: the URL may still work when clicked.
Identify what is failing
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Clicking or tapping does nothing | Slack cache or version, browser handoff, device permissions, or a managed-device policy |
| A browser opens, but the page will not load | The destination, sign-in, network, VPN, proxy, or web filter |
| The link opens in the wrong browser | Your default-browser settings or an organization-required mobile browser |
| Only the preview is missing | Preview metadata, privacy, message format, or workspace preview settings |
| One website fails but other links work | The site, its authentication, the specific URL, or a domain restriction |
| Links fail for several people | A shared network or workspace policy, a service issue, or an app bug |
Start with these quick checks
- Copy the URL and open it outside Slack. Right-click or long-press the link and choose Copy Link if that option appears. Paste it into your normal browser. Check that the address is complete and begins with
https://orhttp://. Avoid pasting private company links or URLs containing access tokens into public websites or tools. - Try a second, known-working website. If that opens but the original does not, focus on the original site, URL, sign-in, or domain access. If neither opens, investigate the browser or network.
- Quit Slack completely and reopen it. Closing a window may leave the desktop app running. Quit the app, launch it again, and retry.
- Install available Slack and browser updates. Updates can include fixes for link handling as well as security improvements. Slack has documented fixes for past external-browser handoff problems on Windows and Android; those historical fixes do not establish the cause of a current problem.
- Clear Slack’s cache and restart. Use the platform-specific steps below before trying more disruptive resets.
The copied-link test is the most useful split: if the address fails in a browser too, Slack may not be the cause. If it works when pasted but fails when clicked in Slack, concentrate on Slack, browser handoff, extensions, or device policy.
Fix links in the Slack desktop app
Clear the desktop cache
- Open Slack.
- In the computer’s top menu bar, choose Help, then Troubleshooting.
- Select Clear Cache and Restart.
On some Windows installations, a three-line menu in the upper-left corner provides access to Help and Troubleshooting. Labels can vary slightly between operating systems and app releases. Slack’s connection troubleshooting guide documents this cache-reset path. Clearing the cache can resolve stale local app state, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Check which browser handles links
For ordinary web addresses, Slack generally hands the link to the operating system or browser environment. Open your system’s default-app settings and confirm that http and https links are assigned to the browser you intend to use. Make sure that browser is installed and updated, then launch it directly outside Slack. A security prompt asking permission to open another app may be expected; approve it only when you recognize and trust the destination.

Compare clients as a diagnostic test: open the workspace in a supported browser and try the same link there. If it works in the browser but not the desktop app, the desktop app’s cache, version, handoff, or endpoint security is a stronger suspect. If it works in the app but not in the browser, investigate browser extensions, cookies, cache, permissions, and browser support.
Test browser extensions and network filters
Open Slack in a private or Incognito window. If the link works there but not in a normal browser window, temporarily disable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict. Private windows can have their own extension and cookie restrictions, so treat this as a comparison, not a permanent fix.
A VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus product, browser extension, or other security device can interfere with loading or connections. If company rules allow it, briefly test without a personal VPN or on another network, such as a phone hotspot. Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, web filtering, or device-management protections. On a managed device, ask IT to check the relevant logs, domain rules, and allowlists instead.

Fix links in Slack on iPhone or Android
Reset Slack’s mobile cache
- iOS: In Slack, tap your profile picture, open Preferences, then look for Debug & Reset Cache and Reset Cache. Slack also documents a device setting that can reset the cache the next time the app launches; its label may differ by iOS version.
- Android: Tap your profile picture, open Preferences, and choose Reset Cache if available.
If Android troubleshooting requires going to the device’s app settings and choosing Slack’s storage controls, distinguish a cache reset from Clear Data. Clearing app data is more disruptive and can sign you out of every workspace. Be sure you can sign in again, including through your organization’s SSO or two-factor authentication, before doing it. Slack’s mobile troubleshooting guidance covers cache-reset options.
Check for a required company browser
Some Enterprise organizations require a secure browser for external links tapped in Slack on mobile. Depending on the organization’s configuration, Slack may prompt you to install or use a browser such as Microsoft Edge or BlackBerry Access rather than opening the link in Safari or Chrome. You may need an access key or sign-in information from IT. Slack explains these arrangements in its guides to requiring a mandatory mobile browser and using one as a member.
Mobile device management, browser allowlists, VPN requirements, SSO sessions, web filters, and endpoint security can also affect link opening. Don’t try to bypass company controls by changing security settings. Ask your administrator which browser and access steps your workspace requires.

If the website opens but will not load
- Check the URL. Look for a truncated address, a typo, an expired invitation, or punctuation accidentally included at the end when copying.
- Sign in to the destination service directly. A company document or private service may require an active session, SSO, a VPN, or permission to view the file.
- Try another browser or network if permitted. If the site works on another network but not the company network, a proxy, DNS rule, firewall, or web filter may be involved. Ask IT whether the destination domain is blocked.
- Check for an authentication or connection prompt. Some third-party services connected to Slack can prompt you to link an account. Slack lets users manage these prompts under Preferences → Connected accounts; turning off all connection prompts also disconnects connected accounts. See Slack’s guide to connecting other services.
For non-web links—such as SSH, FTP, SFTP, SMB, mail, or links that launch another application—the operating system may need a registered app or may show a confirmation prompt. Don’t approve an unfamiliar application launch just to dismiss an error. Slack has documented handling for these link types and confirmation behavior in its Windows beta release notes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf only the link preview is missing
A preview is the title, image, or other content Slack may show beneath a posted URL. It is not the link itself. If the URL is clickable and opens, the problem is with preview generation, not link opening.
Slack says previews may be absent if a page lacks the necessary preview data; is private or password-protected; was recently posted in the conversation; comes from an unsupported media service; or appears in a message containing more than five links. In some cases, the URL format—including omitting http://—can affect expansion. Try clicking the actual URL, sending the complete address, or posting the links in smaller groups. A workspace owner or admin can also manage preview settings. See Slack’s guidance on sharing links and preview preferences and managing workspace previews.

If no clickable URL appears, paste the full URL as plain text. For a private service, sign in to the destination separately; a preview cannot establish that you have access.

Slack updates its supported operating-system, app, and browser requirements periodically. Check the Slack support lifecycle for current thresholds rather than relying on version numbers from an older article. An unsupported or outdated client can cause compatibility problems, but it does not prove why a particular link is failing.

What to send IT or Slack Support
If the basic tests do not resolve it, provide useful evidence rather than only saying “links are broken”:
- Whether clicking does nothing, an error appears, the browser opens, or only the preview is missing
- Whether the copied URL works in a browser, and whether other websites work
- The affected device and operating system, Slack app or browser version, and browser name
- Whether the issue affects one person, one workspace, one domain, or multiple users and networks
- The approximate start time, exact error text, and whether VPN, SSO, or a required company browser is involved
Slack provides a connection test. If it reports errors, Slack recommends contacting your network administrator. Avoid sending confidential URLs or tokens unless your organization has a secure process for sharing them.
Quick Recap
Recommended order
