Large widgets can stack in iOS 14, but only with other widgets of the same size. If dragging one onto another sends it to a new Home Screen page instead, try the cross-page drag workaround reported by users—or add a large Smart Stack and edit its contents. The cross-page method is a community workaround, not an Apple-guaranteed fix.
First check: are both widgets large?
A stack can contain widgets only when they have the same size: large with large, medium with medium, or small with small. A large widget will not merge with a medium or small one, even if both widgets come from the same app. Apps also do not necessarily offer every widget size.
To check, open the widget gallery, find the app, and swipe through the available widget sizes. Confirm that each widget you want to combine has a large version. If a widget is missing or malfunctioning, update its app and try again.

Try Apple’s normal stacking method
- Touch and hold an empty part of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- Press and hold the large widget you want to move.
- Drag it directly over the other large widget or stack. Move slowly and wait for the target to shift or highlight before releasing.
- Tap Done.
A successful stack lets you swipe vertically through its widgets. A stack can hold up to 10 same-size widgets. Apple documents this basic drag-and-drop method, but some users reported that large widgets in iOS 14 moved to another page instead of merging.

If the widget moves to another page: try the cross-page workaround
During the iOS 14 rollout, users reported that dragging large widgets between pages could be inconsistent. This two-finger maneuver is a reported workaround, not an official Apple troubleshooting procedure:
- Arrange two mostly empty, adjacent Home Screen pages. Put the target large widget or stack on one page and the widget you want to add on the other.
- Enter jiggle mode by touching and holding an empty area of the Home Screen.
- Press and hold the widget to move it with one finger. Keep that finger on the screen.
- With another finger, swipe horizontally to the page containing the target.
- Move the held widget directly over the target and release only when it is positioned on top of it.
Starting with the target near the top-left of a mostly empty page may make placement easier. If the widget creates another page instead, stop, leave jiggle mode, and inspect your Home Screen before trying again; repeated failed drags were reported to create unwanted pages. Use a large Smart Stack instead
If manual stacking keeps failing, a Smart Stack is often the simpler route. It is already a collection of widgets, so you can add one and edit its contents rather than dragging every widget onto another.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- Tap the + button, select Smart Stack, and choose the large size.
- Tap Add Widget, then tap Done.
- Touch and hold the Smart Stack and tap Edit Stack.
- Reorder widgets by dragging them. Swipe left on an unwanted widget to remove it when that control is available, then tap Done.
You can also add and edit an existing stack through the widget controls described in Apple’s widget guide. If the desired app or widget is not available in the stack, check that the app offers a large Home Screen widget.
Smart Stack, custom stack, and rotation are different things
- Custom stack: A collection you make by dragging one widget onto another. You can swipe through its widgets manually.
- Smart Stack: A prebuilt collection that you can edit and reorder.
- Smart Rotate: An optional behavior that lets iOS select which widget to display based on relevance signals and learned behavior. It is not a fixed timer and does not make incompatible widgets stackable.
To change rotation, touch and hold the stack, tap Edit Stack, then turn Smart Rotate on or off. With it off, you can still swipe through the widgets manually. With it on, do not expect every widget to appear on a predictable schedule; Apple describes selection as relevance-based. See Apple’s explanation of widget relevance and Smart Rotate.

Widget Suggestions belong to iOS 15 and later, not the original iOS 14 feature set. Menu labels and behavior may also differ on newer iOS versions; these steps are specifically for iOS 14.
If the stack still will not form
- Check again that both widgets are large and that the apps provide those sizes.
- Make room on the destination page. Large widgets occupy substantial Home Screen space; remove or move another item if there is not enough room.
- Remove the two problem widgets, restart the iPhone, and add them again. You can test with Apple widgets to see whether the issue affects more than one app.
- Try adding a large Smart Stack and editing it, or keep the widgets on separate pages if dragging remains unreliable.
- Install available iOS updates compatible with the device and update the widget apps.
- If only one app’s widget is missing, blank, or corrupted, contact its developer. Reinstalling that app may help with that widget problem, but it is not a general fix for a Home Screen drag issue. If every large widget behaves incorrectly, contact Apple Support.
A Home Screen reset or device erase is not a sensible early step for a widget-placement problem. Preserve your current layout before making any major changes.

Why is my Smart Stack not rotating?
Smart Rotate uses relevance signals and learned behavior, not a guaranteed schedule. Check that Smart Rotate is enabled in Edit Stack; you can still swipe manually.
Do all apps provide large widgets?
No. Widget sizes vary by app. Check the app’s available sizes in the widget gallery.
