If images appear in a Kendo UI page but disappear from its PDF, start with the image request rather than the PDF viewer. Kendo’s Drawing export can render scene images only when they are same-origin or successfully CORS-enabled. Then verify that the response’s real image format matches its filename, test from an HTTP(S) origin instead of file://, and check for tainted canvases or browser-specific SVG limitations.
What usually causes missing images
The export process captures a drawing scene, not a screenshot of whatever the browser happens to display. Every image must therefore remain readable under browser security rules while Kendo converts the scene to PDF. The documented causes are:
- Cross-origin delivery without permission: the image host does not return a permissive CORS response header.
- Incorrect file type: the bytes are PNG (or another format) while the URL extension says JPG, or the reverse.
- Local-file execution: the page was opened from disk with a
file://URL. - Tainted canvas content: a canvas contains pixels loaded from an origin that was not CORS-approved.
- Conditional browser or format limits: Telerik documents, for example, an Internet Explorer limitation involving SVG documents referenced through an
imgelement. - Pipeline or version mismatch: the code is not following the asynchronous Drawing API flow, or the example targets a different Kendo product or release.
These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of every application. The fastest path is to inspect one failing image and work through the checks below.
1. Inspect the final image request
Use the browser’s Network panel
- Open DevTools and select Network.
- Reload the page, then filter by
Imgor search for the image filename. - Open the request that supplied the pixels actually shown on screen. Follow redirects and record the final URL.
- Compare that URL’s scheme, host and port with the page URL. Any difference is cross-origin.
- Check the response status,
Content-Type, response body and CORS headers.
Kendo’s exportPDF API states that scene images must be same-origin or CORS-enabled. A successful request in the Network panel is not enough: the browser must also allow the image to be reused by the drawing export. The page’s JavaScript cannot grant permission that the image server omitted.

Choose a delivery fix
- Same origin: proxy or serve the asset from the application’s own scheme, host and port. This avoids a cross-origin check.
- Cross origin with CORS: configure the image server to return an appropriate
Access-Control-Allow-Originvalue for the application. If credentials are used, the server and client settings must be consistent; do not replace a restricted policy with a wildcard casually. - Unconfigurable third party: obtain a permitted copy through a server-side arrangement or use an image host whose response policy you control. Client-side code cannot override the third party’s headers.
After changing headers or hosting, clear caches, reload the page, and verify the final response again. A redirect to a different host can reintroduce the problem even when the original URL looked same-origin.
2. Verify the real image format
Telerik warns that a PNG served with a JPG extension can be omitted from the PDF or trigger exceptions in a PDF reader. Inspect the response bytes or an image inspector, not just the filename. The URL extension, Content-Type, and encoded image must agree.
- For a PNG, serve PNG data, use a
.pngURL where practical, and returnimage/png. - For a JPEG, serve JPEG data, use a
.jpgor.jpegURL, and returnimage/jpeg. - For SVG, confirm that the browser and Kendo version support the way the SVG is referenced.
If an image transformation service changes the format while preserving the old extension, correct the transformation URL or response metadata. Re-test the exported file in more than one PDF viewer when an exception is reported.

3. Stop testing from file://
Opening an HTML file directly from disk gives it a file:// origin. Telerik lists local-file export as a possible CORS failure. Run the same application through its normal development server or another HTTP(S) server instead:
- Start the project’s usual development server.
- Open its HTTP URL, such as your configured localhost address.
- Load the image through the same route used in production.
- Repeat the export and inspect Network and Console output.
This separates a local-origin restriction from an actual image-host problem. Do not treat a successful disk preview as proof that production export is configured correctly, or vice versa.

4. Check canvases, CSS images and SVG
Canvas tainting
Kendo can include a canvas only when it is non-tainted. If a cross-origin image was drawn into the canvas without a valid CORS load, browser security prevents pixel access and the export may omit it or fail. Configure the image response first, set the image element’s cross-origin behavior before assigning its source, and draw only after the image has loaded. A canvas that was already tainted cannot be repaired by changing a setting afterward; recreate it with correctly loaded assets.
Elements that are not ordinary img tags
Background images, inline SVG, CSS-generated content and canvas drawings can travel through different browser paths. Isolate the failing element by exporting a minimal container containing one image. If a plain same-origin img exports while the styled or canvas version does not, the rendering route—not the PDF writer—is the useful next lead.

The Kendo limitations documentation records an Internet Explorer limitation for SVG documents referenced through img. Treat this as a conditional legacy-browser check, not a universal ban on SVG. Confirm the browser, SVG form, and Kendo release before changing assets. Testing the same page in a current supported browser helps establish whether the limitation is environment-specific.
5. Confirm the asynchronous Kendo export path
The Kendo UI for jQuery getting-started flow creates a drawing group with kendo.drawing.drawDOM, then saves it with kendo.drawing.pdf.saveAs. Export is asynchronous. Wait for the promise (or the callback style supported by your release) and inspect rejected operations instead of immediately assuming that an absent image is the only failure.
kendo.drawing.drawDOM($("#invoice"), {
paperSize: "A4",
margin: { top: "1cm", left: "1cm", right: "1cm", bottom: "1cm" }
}).then(function(group) {
return kendo.drawing.pdf.saveAs(group, "invoice.pdf");
}).catch(function(error) {
console.error("Kendo PDF export failed", error);
});
Make sure the Kendo scripts and Drawing/PDF modules match the product and version used by the page. Kendo UI has multiple product flavors and widget-specific export methods; an example for Kendo UI for jQuery is not automatically valid for another framework. The PDF overview also notes that most export options use the Drawing library, while some jQuery widgets expose built-in export commands.

A repeatable diagnostic checklist
- Record the browser, Kendo product and exact release.
- Identify whether the source is an
img, CSS background, SVG or canvas. - Capture the final image URL after redirects.
- Compare page and image origins.
- Verify CORS response headers for cross-origin images.
- Compare extension,
Content-Typeand actual encoded format. - Repeat from HTTP(S), never only from
file://. - For canvas content, recreate it after a CORS-correct image load.
- Check the documented SVG/browser limitation when relevant.
- Confirm that the asynchronous
drawDOMandpdf.saveAschain completes without console errors.
Common symptoms and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Image displays in the page but is absent in the PDF | Cross-origin response lacks permissive CORS headers | Serve it same-origin or configure the image host’s CORS policy. |
| PDF viewer reports an image exception | Bytes and extension describe different formats | Serve matching data, extension and MIME type. |
| Export fails only when opening the HTML file directly | file:// origin restrictions |
Run the app from its HTTP(S) development or production origin. |
| Canvas content is blank or rejected | Canvas was tainted by a cross-origin image | Load the image with a valid CORS response before drawing, then recreate the canvas. |
| Only an older browser fails with an SVG image | Documented Internet Explorer SVG-through-img limitation |
Use a supported browser or an alternative SVG delivery route after confirming your version. |
| Console shows export or promise errors | Pipeline, script, widget or version mismatch | Verify matching Kendo modules and handle the asynchronous completion/rejection path. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is simply a reliable image or PDF of a URL rather than debugging a Kendo scene, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP endpoint. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
