If java.awt.Robot throws a SecurityException, produces a blank-looking BufferedImage, or appears to freeze on macOS, first grant Screen & System Audio Recording permission to the application that actually launches your Java process. On macOS 13 and later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, enable the launcher, then run the capture again. On macOS 12 and earlier, use System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy; labels vary by release. Apple documents the current path and how to add a missing app at Apple Support.
Identify the failure before changing permissions
Run the smallest reproducible capture and record exactly what happens. A denied permission can raise SecurityException; Java also permits a BufferedImage whose contents are undefined, so a white, black, or otherwise blank image is consistent with denied access but does not prove it. A delay may instead be permission acquisition or a slow capture. Oracle documents these behaviors in the Java SE 25 Robot API.
- Exception: save the complete stack trace, including the first failing
Robotcall. - Blank or undefined image: verify permissions, then verify the rectangle and image-writing code.
- App appears stuck: determine whether capture is running on the AWT Event Dispatch Thread (EDT).
- Unrelated error: check coordinates, dimensions, display selection, and output-file handling before changing privacy settings.

}Compile and run it from the same terminal, IDE, launcher, or packaged application you use in production. That detail matters because macOS permissions are presented for listed applications, not for an abstract “Java” concept.
Grant Screen & System Audio Recording access
macOS 13 and later
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Open Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Find the application that launches the Java process and turn recording on.
- Authenticate if macOS asks, then quit and relaunch that application before testing again.
Apple’s instructions are at Control access to screen and system audio recording on Mac. If the launcher is absent, use the page’s Add control to navigate to and add it. Add only a binary you recognize and control.

macOS 12 and earlier
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy and locate the screen-recording control. Apple changed the product name and layout in macOS 13, so older systems use different labels. The broader permission model is described in Apple’s app-access security guide.
Which application should be enabled?
Enable the trusted application that launches the process: for example, Terminal, an IDE, a script runner, or your bundled Java app. The official Apple material explains selecting listed apps and adding one, but does not establish a universal rule that every Java workflow appears under Terminal, an IDE, or a particular JVM binary. If you use several launch routes, test and authorize each route separately.

Do not assume Accessibility or Input Monitoring is the remedy. Those permissions govern other forms of interaction; the documented control for reading screen pixels is Screen & System Audio Recording.
Prevent an apparent freeze
Oracle recommends that screen-capture methods not run on the AWT Event Dispatch Thread because capture can be lengthy, especially when permission acquisition involves user interaction. Move the call to a worker thread and keep the EDT available for repainting and input.

Check rectangles, displays, and scaling
Rectangle validity
createScreenCapture rejects rectangles with non-positive width or height. Log x, y, width, and height immediately before the call. A window or monitor can move, be disconnected, or report coordinates that differ from your assumptions.

The default screen-size API describes a single logical area and may not match a multi-monitor virtual coordinate space. Obtain device bounds from GraphicsEnvironment and capture the specific device rectangle you intend. On high-resolution displays, Java’s createMultiResolutionScreenCapture can return scaled and native-resolution variants; choose the variant appropriate for your output rather than assuming logical pixels equal physical pixels. Make the output testable
- Write to a new, absolute path and print that path.
- Print image dimensions and color model before saving.
- Open the file with a known image viewer to separate capture problems from display or encoding problems.
- Capture a small, known rectangle first; then expand to full-screen or multi-display bounds.
A repeatable troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce the issue and classify it as exception, blank/undefined image, delay, or another error.
- Identify the exact launcher (Terminal, IDE, script host, or packaged app).
- Enable that launcher under the macOS screen-recording privacy control, adding it with Apple’s Add control if necessary.
- Quit and relaunch the launcher, then rerun the minimal program.
- If it still hangs, move capture off the EDT and log start, completion, and exception times.
- Validate rectangle coordinates and positive dimensions; test one display and then additional displays.
- Record macOS version, Java vendor and version, launch route, permission state, exception text, and image dimensions for further diagnosis.

Does granting Screen & System Audio Recording require Accessibility permission too?
Not for the screen-pixel access described here. Accessibility and Input Monitoring control different interactions; do not enable them unless your application independently needs those capabilities.
Why does the permission change seem ineffective?
macOS may be authorizing a different launcher than the one you changed. Confirm the exact app that starts the Java process, add that recognized app if it is missing, then quit and relaunch it before testing.
Can I use Robot to capture only one window?
Robot captures a screen rectangle. Compute the window’s current screen coordinates and dimensions, validate positive width and height, and remember that overlapping windows can appear in the rectangle.
