If your iPhone says “Zero KB used” while the storage bar, apps, photos, or available-space figure show data, the phone is usually displaying an incomplete or incorrect storage calculation—not an empty device. Start by waiting a few minutes, restarting the iPhone, and installing the latest iOS update offered for your model. These steps do not delete your personal data.
Why your iPhone says “Zero KB used”
iPhone Storage is generated from a system calculation that categorizes locally stored apps, photos, videos, messages, Mail, media, iCloud Drive downloads, System, and Other. After an iOS update, migration, restore, large photo import, or major app change, that calculation may take time to finish or may fail to display consistently.
Apple also notes that cached and temporary data may not be counted consistently in an app’s displayed total. “System” and “Other” can include items such as logs, caches, indexes, fonts, dictionaries, Siri voices, Keychain data, and CloudKit data. Therefore, individual totals do not always add up exactly to what you expect. See Apple’s explanation of storage categories at Apple Support.
The exact “Zero KB used” symptom is not currently documented by Apple as a specific bug. Historical Apple Community reports from 2021 linked similar behavior with iOS 15 and said it corrected after an update, but those anecdotal reports do not establish that any particular iOS version available today will fix it.

First, determine whether the storage is actually unavailable
Check the same phone in several places before deleting anything:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Compare the heading with the colored storage bar and the app list.
- Open Settings > General > About and check Capacity and Available.
- If possible, connect the iPhone to a computer and compare its capacity and used space there.
On a Mac, open Finder and select the iPhone. On Windows, use Apple Devices; use iTunes only where Apple Devices is unavailable. Trust the computer if prompted. Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes are supported ways to view and manage iPhone data and backups.
If the phone can still install apps, take photos, and shows a plausible Available number elsewhere, the zero figure is probably a presentation or indexing error. If it says storage is full, cannot update, or cannot save photos, treat the situation as a possible genuine shortage even if the headline says zero.

Leave Settings > General > iPhone Storage open for several minutes, especially after:
- an iOS update;
- a device-to-device migration;
- a restore;
- indexing a large batch of photos or videos; or
- installing or deleting large apps.
There is no Apple-published guaranteed recalculation time. Waiting is reasonable when the phone otherwise works normally, but do not wait indefinitely if the page is blank, the phone is unusable, or storage is genuinely running out.
Fix 2: Restart the iPhone
A normal restart is the safest active troubleshooting step. It does not erase photos, apps, messages, or files. After the phone starts again, return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and leave the page open while the categories load.
If the iPhone is frozen or cannot restart normally, use a force restart. This is not a factory reset and does not intentionally erase the device:

- iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: Hold the Side and Volume Down buttons until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Hold the Home and Side or Top buttons until the Apple logo appears.
Apple documents these combinations in its force-restart and recovery guidance.
Fix 3: Update iOS
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest compatible update offered to your iPhone. Connect the phone to power and Wi-Fi during the update if possible. Then restart if prompted and check iPhone Storage again.
Do not rely on a fixed version number: iOS availability depends on the iPhone model and changes over time. If the phone cannot update normally, connect it to Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows. If it enters the recovery screen, Apple says to try Update before Restore when appropriate. Update attempts to reinstall iOS while retaining personal data, whereas Restore erases the device. See Apple’s update and backup guidance and recovery-mode instructions.
Older Apple Community users reported that iOS 15.1 or later corrected similar displays, but that was a 2021 observation—not a guarantee about current iOS releases.

Fix 4: Recheck storage after restarting or updating
Use this sequence:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage.
- Wait for the categories and app list to populate.
- Compare the heading, colored bar, Available figure, and app totals.
If the app list is populated and the bar looks normal but the heading still says zero, the figures are inconsistent and the problem is likely in presentation or indexing. Avoid deleting content solely to make that number change.
Fix 5: Check the phone from a Mac or Windows PC
Connect the iPhone by cable and inspect it in Finder on macOS or Apple Devices on Windows. This is a diagnostic cross-check, not a guaranteed repair. Some users report that connecting to a computer helped the display refresh, but Apple does not state that doing so always rebuilds the storage database.
If the computer also reports implausible figures, or the phone cannot be recognized, update or back up through the computer before considering more invasive recovery steps. Apple’s computer backup and restore instructions are available at Apple Support.

Fix 6: Back up before resetting anything
Do not erase an iPhone merely because its storage display is wrong. Create and verify a backup before using Reset All Settings or erasing the phone.

Back up with iCloud
Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Confirm that the backup finishes and check its date and time. If it fails, check available iCloud space, use Wi-Fi, and install any available software update. Apple’s iCloud backup troubleshooting provides additional steps.
Back up to a computer
Use Finder on Mac or Apple Devices on Windows. An encrypted computer backup is required to transfer Health and Activity data. Record the encryption password securely; without it, you may not be able to use that backup for a complete recovery. Check the backup date, size, and completion status. Also make sure you know your Apple Account password.
Some apps store data locally or use their own backup and synchronization systems. A general iCloud or computer backup does not guarantee that every app’s data can be recovered simply by signing in again.
Fix 7: Try Reset All Settings
If the display remains wrong after restarting, updating, and backing up, you can try:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings
Apple says this does not delete photos, messages, apps, documents, or other personal media. It does reset system preferences, including saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, Apple Pay cards, Face ID settings, privacy permissions, and VPN configurations. You will need to configure those settings again.

This may help if damaged preferences contribute to the problem, but Apple does not specifically promise that Reset All Settings rebuilds or repairs the storage index. Treat it as an optional, non-guaranteed intermediate step.
Fix 8: Erase and restore the iPhone
Use this only after a successful, verified backup—or when Apple Support specifically directs you to do it. Erasing removes all user data and returns the iPhone to factory settings.

Afterward:
- Complete the Hello/setup screens.
- Choose Restore from iCloud Backup, or restore from Finder or Apple Devices.
- Select the correct backup using its date and size.
- Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while apps, photos, and other content download.
Restoration may continue in the background for hours or days depending on backup size and network speed.
Restore the backup or set up as new?
Restoring preserves more data and settings, but it may bring back the condition if the cause is contained in restored settings, app data, or the backup state. Setting up as new provides the cleanest test, but you must reinstall apps manually and recover data through each service’s own sync or backup system. If the problem appears only after restoring a particular backup, that is a useful clue—not proof of a specific cause.

Contact Apple Support if the storage page remains blank or implausible after an update and restart, the iPhone cannot back up or update, the device is nearly unusable, or the issue returns after a clean restore. If possible, preserve a computer backup before seeking service.

If necessary, remove clearly expendable local videos or apps and use Apple’s storage recommendations. Do not repeatedly erase and restore the phone without confirming that the backup is usable.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing physical iPhone Storage with cloud-based iCloud Storage.
- Assuming “Zero KB used” means photos or apps have vanished.
- Deleting personal content before confirming whether the display is wrong.
- Calling a force restart a factory reset.
- Assuming Reset All Settings deletes data—or guarantees a storage repair.
- Promising that clearing Safari data, offloading apps, or deleting caches will rebuild storage accounting.
- Presenting old iOS 15 reports as evidence about the current iOS release.
- Restoring from an unverified or obsolete backup.
Buying more iCloud storage can help when there is not enough room for an iCloud backup, but it does not increase the iPhone’s physical capacity or directly repair an incorrect iPhone Storage display.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “Zero KB used” mean my photos are gone?
Not by itself. If the photos, apps, colored bar, or Available figure still appear, the zero may be a reporting error. Check the phone and make a backup before taking invasive action.
Is iPhone Storage the same as iCloud Storage?
No. iPhone Storage is physical capacity on the device. iCloud Storage is cloud capacity used for backups, photos, files, and other services.
Will restarting delete anything?
No. A normal restart and a force restart do not intentionally erase photos, apps, messages, or files.
Should I delete apps to fix the display?
Not solely because the heading says zero. Delete content only if the phone also reports genuinely low available space or cannot function normally.
Do I need to factory-reset the iPhone?
Usually not. Wait, restart, update, cross-check on a computer, and back up first. Erase and restore is a last-resort software step.
What if I cannot back up the iPhone?
