If your iPhone started losing battery quickly or getting unusually warm after an iOS 26 update, the update may still be doing background work—but it is not the only possible cause. Check Settings > Battery for update activity, app usage and weak-signal warnings; then test the likely cause one step at a time. If the phone shows a temperature warning, stop using and charging it and let it cool. Persistent heat while idle, repeated charging pauses or a Battery Health service alert warrants further diagnosis.

First, decide whether the iPhone is warm or overheating

An iPhone can become warm during setup, backup restoration, an iOS update, wireless charging, gaming, navigation, high-resolution streaming or extended camera use. It should generally cool after the demanding activity stops. Apple describes these as conditions that can affect temperature and notes that iPhones are designed for ambient temperatures between 0°C and 35°C (32°F and 95°F). Prolonged exposure to hotter conditions can permanently shorten battery life. See Apple’s guidance on operating temperatures and thermal management.

Heat that continues during light use or while the phone is idle deserves investigation. A temperature warning, charging pause, dimmed display or shutdown means iOS is managing excess temperature—not that you should keep testing the phone under load.

If it is very hot: stop gaming, navigation, recording or streaming; disconnect the charger; remove a case temporarily if it traps heat; and move the phone out of sunlight or a hot car. Lock the screen and let it cool naturally. If it remains very hot, turn it off if safe to do so. Do not put it in a freezer or against ice: condensation and rapid temperature changes can cause damage. Do not continue wireless charging while investigating.

If you updated recently, check whether background work is still running

After a major update, iOS may continue tasks such as indexing, photo analysis, setup and app processing. Apple says this can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance, and advises allowing several days before judging battery life. There is no guaranteed recovery time: it can vary with the iPhone, update, photo library, storage and accounts.

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Review Battery Suggestions and Insights for update-related activity, such as an ongoing iOS update.
  3. Use the Daily Usage chart to compare recent days rather than relying on one unusually busy day.

Keep the phone on trusted Wi-Fi and connect it to power when convenient, in a cool environment. If update activity is still shown, give it time to finish. If the phone remains hot or drains unusually quickly after that insight disappears—or after several days of ordinary use—continue with the checks below. Apple explains these battery tools in its iPhone battery and performance guidance.

Find what is using the battery

  1. Go to Settings > Battery and tap View All Battery Usage.
  2. Compare app and system activity in the usage view and inspect the Daily Usage chart.
  3. Tap a frequently listed app to compare its current use with the previous seven days.
  4. Look at the activity label as well as the percentage: the cause may be background work, weak cellular coverage, screen use or a temporary system task.
  • High use with Background Activity: An app or service may be working when you are not actively using it. Check whether the same app recurs over multiple days.
  • No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal: The phone may be using extra power searching for or maintaining a cellular connection. This is not, by itself, evidence of a defective battery.
  • High screen-on use: Long screen time, high brightness or demanding content may explain the drain without a software fault.
  • Update-related or other system activity: Consider whether it matches a recent update or setup before treating it as a persistent fault.

Patterns are more useful than a single top entry. A demanding app used for hours can legitimately lead the list; repeated background activity from an app you barely use is more actionable. Apple’s battery view describes app activity and signal-related use in its battery guidance.

Try the fix that matches the evidence

If one app stands out

Update it from the App Store, then test whether its activity changes. You can temporarily turn off Background App Refresh for that app at Settings > General > Background App Refresh, or review its access under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. App-specific options may also appear under Settings.

Change one thing at a time and observe the phone for about a day of normal use. Restrict location or background activity only where appropriate: doing so can affect navigation, tracking, widgets, notifications or other features. If considering deletion and reinstallation, first confirm that the app’s data is synced or backed up. Do not force-close every app as a general battery fix. Apple’s developer documentation explains how app activity, network use and location can affect energy consumption and temperature: Analyzing your app’s battery use.

If low signal appears in Battery

Compare behavior somewhere with stronger reception, or use trusted Wi-Fi where available. Underground spaces, rural areas, large buildings and moving vehicles can all produce weak or inconsistent service. As a short diagnostic test, Airplane Mode can help reveal whether cellular connectivity is contributing to the drain; it is not a practical permanent fix if you need calls or mobile data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also test 5G Auto instead of forcing 5G: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > 5G Auto. Apple says iPhone can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeable benefit, which can help save battery. If service is unusually poor across locations, ask your carrier about coverage or the connection.

If screen use or brightness is high

Try reducing brightness, enabling Auto-Brightness and using a shorter Auto-Lock interval. If your model has an always-on display or high-refresh-rate options, test changing the relevant setting rather than turning off every visual feature. These are controlled tests: keep the changes that improve battery life without disrupting how you use the phone. Apple lists brightness and Auto-Lock among factors that affect battery life in its battery guidance.

If the heat appears during charging

Disconnect the phone and let it cool before charging again. Try wired charging in a cool room, without intensive activity such as gaming, navigation, video recording or hotspot use. Remove a heat-trapping case during the test and avoid charging in direct sun or a hot car. Wireless charging can make an iPhone warm; sustained excessive temperature, rather than warmth alone, is the concern.

If the Lock Screen says “Charging On Hold. Charging will resume when [device] returns to normal temperature,” allow it to cool instead of repeatedly reconnecting the charger. Apple explains charging pauses and temperature management here. Do not use battery-drain-to-zero or other extreme-temperature “calibration” routines.

Use Low Power Mode as a short-term test

Turn it on at Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. It reduces or pauses some power-consuming behavior, including Mail fetch, “Hey Siri,” Background App Refresh and some visual effects. It is useful as a temporary workaround and diagnostic comparison, but it changes convenience and background behavior. Low Power Mode automatically turns off after the iPhone is charged above 80 percent.

If the phone still gets hot and drains rapidly in Low Power Mode, look more closely at apps, signal, battery condition or hardware rather than assuming a setting will solve it. Feature details are in Apple’s battery guidance.

Adaptive Power is available only on selected models

With iOS 26 or later, Adaptive Power is available on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. If supported, find it at Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power. Owners of other models should not expect to see this option.

Adaptive Power can make automatic performance adjustments and may turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20 percent. That may help on high-use days, but can alter performance or behavior. It is optional, not a universal overheating repair; use it only if the trade-off suits you. See Apple’s model and feature details.

Restart, update and check Battery Health

After reviewing Battery activity, save your work and restart the iPhone normally. Then check Settings > General > Software Update and install a later stable iOS update if one is offered. Reassess after the phone has had time to complete any background activity. Some people report battery or heat changes after particular iOS 26.x releases, but those reports do not establish that an update universally caused or fixed the problem. Do not assume a specific release will resolve it without confirmation from Apple or reliable testing.

Battery Health is at:

  • iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Battery Health
  • iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging

Maximum Capacity is one indicator, not a complete diagnosis. A high percentage does not rule out every battery or hardware issue, and a percentage alone is not a universal replacement threshold. A Service message is a stronger reason to arrange an inspection. If the reading changed after an update, that timing alone does not prove the update physically damaged the battery; age, heat, charging cycles and measurement recalculation can all matter.

If a battery was replaced, check Parts and Service History where available. Apple says nongenuine parts can affect battery information and service behavior; iPhone 15 and later may show a Used message when a battery was previously installed in another iPhone. Read Apple’s battery parts and service information.

Reserve resets and erasing for later

Reset All Settings is not a first-line fix. If you have already checked update activity, apps, signal, charging, restarted and installed available updates, it may be worth considering. The path is generally Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings; menu labels can vary by iOS version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This does not erase personal photos, apps or messages like a full erase, but it resets system preferences, network settings, privacy and location choices, keyboard settings, Apple Pay cards and other configuration. Back up first and be prepared to reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore preferences. It is not guaranteed to fix battery drain.

Erasing the iPhone should be a last-resort diagnostic step, after less disruptive checks have failed. Before proceeding, make a current iCloud or encrypted computer backup and confirm you can recover photos, messages, passwords, authenticator accounts, Health data, eSIM details and two-factor authentication access. If you need to distinguish a software configuration problem from hardware, temporarily setting up the phone as new can be informative—but it takes time and should not be done without a reliable recovery plan. Restoring the same configuration immediately may bring the original problem back.

When to contact Apple

Arrange professional service if the iPhone stays hot during light use or idle, repeatedly pauses charging because of temperature, shows a temperature warning, shuts down or restarts, has major performance reductions, or continues to drain severely after post-update activity has ended and the checks above. A Battery Health Service message, swelling or enclosure damage, or heat that began after a drop, liquid exposure or repair also calls for inspection.

Apple offers in-person and mail-in repair options through Apple Support. Battery service eligibility and cost depend on model, location, coverage and inspection; use Apple’s battery service estimator rather than relying on a universal price. Coverage and repair options vary by device and plan. Do not use a third-party “cleaner” or battery-booster app as a substitute for diagnosis; such apps cannot repair iOS battery behavior and may add activity or permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick troubleshooting order

  1. For concerning heat, stop demanding activity, disconnect charging and let the phone cool safely.
  2. In Settings > Battery, check Insights, Daily Usage and View All Battery Usage.
  3. Allow several days if an update-related task is still shown; otherwise investigate recurring app activity or low signal.
  4. Test targeted app, display, signal or charging changes one at a time; use Low Power Mode temporarily if useful.
  5. Restart, install any available stable iOS update and check Battery Health.
  6. If heat persists at idle, a warning appears, Battery Health says Service or the device is damaged, contact Apple or an authorized provider.
