If installing [email protected] fails with spawn git ENOENT or an error fetching eligrey/FileSaver.js over SSH, check that Git is installed and available on PATH, then check that your machine or CI runner can reach GitHub using the transport shown in the error. jsPDF 1.5.3 declares a GitHub-hosted dependency, so the failure can occur before your application ever runs. Pin the version and keep the lockfile to make successful installs reproducible.

Why jsPDF 1.5.3 installation fails

jsPDF is a JavaScript library for generating PDFs in the browser. Version 1.5.3 is a legacy release whose package manifest specifies eligrey/FileSaver.js#1.3.8 as a dependency using a GitHub repository reference. That means an npm installation may need to invoke Git and fetch a repository, in addition to downloading ordinary registry packages.

The characteristic error reported for this version includes npm ERR! syscall spawn git, npm ERR! enoent spawn git ENOENT, and a fetch of eligrey/FileSaver.js.git. ENOENT commonly indicates that the install process could not find or launch the git executable. If Git is present, the fetch may instead be blocked by network policy, SSH configuration, or credentials. This is an installation-environment problem to investigate first—not evidence of a PDF-generation API bug.

The package manifest also pins several dependencies, including [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected]. That older dependency tree is another reason to verify compatibility before changing versions or relying on a modern build setup.

Fix the Git or GitHub fetch failure

  1. Confirm the requested version. Check your package.json, install command, and lockfile. If the application specifically needs 1.5.3, use an explicit version so the troubleshooting result is not confused with a different release.
  2. Read the failing part of the npm log. Look for spawn git ENOENT, the GitHub repository name, and whether the remote URL uses SSH (for example, a [email protected]: form). The precise message distinguishes a missing executable from a connection or authentication problem.
  3. Install Git in the environment that runs npm. On a workstation, install Git and open a new terminal. In a container or CI runner, add Git to the image or setup steps before running npm. It is not enough for Git to be installed on a developer’s computer if the failing install runs in a separate build environment.
  4. Check executable visibility. In a fresh shell, run git --version. If the command is not found, correct the environment’s PATH or install location; then start a new shell or runner so it inherits the updated environment.
  5. Test the actual GitHub transport. If the error shows SSH, confirm that the runner is permitted to make outbound SSH connections and has the required key or access. If your organization blocks SSH or GitHub access, ask whether an approved HTTPS route or dependency mirror is available. Installing Git alone cannot overcome a firewall, missing credential, or blocked outbound connection.
  6. Retry the version-pinned install and save the lockfile. Use the project’s package manager and commit its lockfile, such as package-lock.json, so later local and CI installs resolve the same dependency tree.
npm install [email protected] --save

If the project already has a lockfile, use the project’s normal reproducible-install workflow in CI rather than silently regenerating dependency versions. For npm projects, that commonly means installing from the committed lockfile with npm ci after the required Git and network access are available.

Choose an installation path that matches the project

npm package in a bundled application

The versioned documentation lists npm installation and imports for webpack- and framework-era applications. Install the requested release explicitly:

npm install [email protected] --save

Depending on the project’s module configuration, the documented import styles include:

import * as jsPDF from 'jspdf';
import jsPDF from 'jspdf';

Do not assume both forms work identically in every bundler or framework. Use the form appropriate to the project’s module interop and existing application code, then run the actual build as well as the install. The 1.5.3 package manifest identifies dist/jspdf.min.js as its main entry and includes browser and Node builds, but that does not guarantee a given old integration will work unchanged with a newer toolchain.

Yarn-managed project

The 1.5.3 documentation also gives a Yarn installation path. Pin the desired release rather than letting the project select a different version:

yarn add [email protected]

Keep the Yarn lockfile under version control. If Yarn reports a Git or SSH fetch failure, apply the same executable, network, and credential checks as for npm; changing package managers does not remove the GitHub dependency in the 1.5.3 manifest.

CDN script for a browser page

If your page does not use npm or a bundler, the versioned documentation lists a CDN script option using jspdf.debug.js. Follow the exact script URL in the jsPDF 1.5.3 documentation and load it before code that uses jsPDF. This avoids installing the npm package in that page’s environment, but it is a different delivery and dependency-management choice: your application still needs a reliable way to load the script at runtime.

Webpack and framework projects

For a bundled app, use the project-local toolchain and a Node.js release compatible with the project’s dependency set. The webpack guide recommends a fresh/current Node.js LTS as a starting point and cautions that a globally installed webpack can lock a project to a version that conflicts with its own dependencies. For a legacy jsPDF package, do not treat “latest Node” or “latest webpack” as proof of compatibility: install reproducibly, run the project build and tests, and change one variable at a time when diagnosing failures.

When pinning an older jsPDF is a reasonable fallback

Community answers to the reported 1.5.3 Git dependency failure cite jsPDF 1.5.2 or 1.4.1 as workarounds. A downgrade may be useful if organizational policy prevents Git dependencies or the build environment cannot access the referenced repository and no approved route is available. It is not a universal repair: another version may change behavior your app relies on.

  • Used Book in Good Condition

Before changing the pin, assess these trade-offs:

  • Network policy: Can the build environment reach the needed host, or is access deliberately restricted?
  • Transport and credentials: Does the failure show SSH, and does the runner have the required key or an allowed alternate route?
  • Reproducibility: Will the chosen version and its transitive dependency tree be recorded in the lockfile?
  • Integration compatibility: Does the app depend on behavior involving html2canvas, autotable, or other integrations that must be retested after a downgrade?
  • Delivery method: Is the project actually using npm/Yarn and a bundler, or would the documented CDN script be a better fit?

If you select a fallback, pin it explicitly, update the lockfile intentionally, and test the application’s PDF output and relevant integrations. Avoid removing or overriding a transitive dependency merely to force installation unless you have verified that the resulting package tree is compatible.

Troubleshooting common errors

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
spawn git ENOENT Git is missing or not visible to the process running npm. Install Git in that workstation, container, or runner; verify git --version in a fresh shell and confirm the executable is on PATH.
An SSH fetch of FileSaver.js.git fails SSH egress is blocked, credentials are absent, or the key lacks access. Use the transport named in the log to investigate. Check runner keys and network rules; ask about an approved HTTPS route or mirror if SSH is disallowed.
Git is installed, but npm still cannot fetch The build host cannot reach GitHub or cannot authenticate over the selected transport. Run the relevant connectivity/authentication check from the same environment as the install. Check firewall and CI secret configuration rather than only your local machine.
The install succeeds locally but fails in CI The CI image may lack Git, network access, credentials, or the committed lockfile. Compare the local and runner environments. Add Git and approved access to the CI setup, then install from the committed lockfile.
Install succeeds but the bundler cannot import jsPDF The import form, module interop, or bundler configuration may not match the application. Try the documented import style appropriate to the project, then verify the actual build. Do not confuse a compile-time import error with the earlier Git fetch failure.
A downgrade installs but PDF behavior changes The application may depend on version-specific behavior or integrations. Retest PDF generation and related html2canvas/autotable use; keep the fallback only if the application’s requirements remain satisfied.

Or skip the browser setup

If your task is to capture a web page as an image or PDF—not to repair a jsPDF dependency—ScreenshotNeo offers a separate website screenshot API. It does not fix npm’s Git fetch; it is an alternative for browser capture workflows. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot (replace the example target URL as needed):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server exposes screenshot and PDF-capture tools to AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
