If Messages on your Mac is missing conversations, read status, or green-bubble texts, first identify which message type is affected. Verify that your Mac and iPhone use the same Apple Account, enable Messages in iCloud on both devices, and check the same addresses under Send & Receive. For SMS, MMS, and RCS, also enable Text Message Forwarding on the iPhone. Then update macOS Tahoe, restart, and allow the initial history download to finish.
Identify what is not syncing
- Blue-bubble iMessages missing: Check the Apple Account, Send & Receive addresses, Messages in iCloud, and iMessage activation.
- Old conversations incomplete: Messages in iCloud may be disabled, still downloading, out of storage, or affected by a local database problem.
- Green-bubble texts missing: Check Text Message Forwarding, the iPhone’s connection and power, and carrier or regional support.
- Messages arrive but read status is stale: Treat it as a synchronization issue, but remember that read-state behavior is not identical across iMessage, SMS, MMS, and RCS.
- Only one conversation is affected: Check the recipient’s phone number or email, blocked contacts, conversation filtering, and whether the thread is actually iMessage or a carrier message.
- Sign-in or server error: Follow the activation, date-and-time, network, VPN, and Apple System Status steps below.
iMessage and green bubbles use different paths
Blue bubbles are iMessage, Apple’s internet messaging service. A Mac can use iMessage directly. Green bubbles are SMS, MMS, or RCS messages; they generally reach the Mac through the iPhone and may depend on your carrier, country, or region. Turning on iMessage alone does not guarantee that every green-bubble message will appear. See Apple’s Messages guide for these distinctions.
Quick, safe fix
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest Tahoe update offered. Apple’s update page listed macOS Tahoe 26.6 as the latest release on August 18, 2026, but the available version may have changed.
- Confirm the same Apple Account is used on the Mac and iPhone.
- Enable Messages in iCloud on both devices.
- Confirm the same phone number and email addresses are selected in Send & Receive.
- For green bubbles, enable Text Message Forwarding for the Mac.
- Restart the Mac and iPhone, connect them to a reliable network, and allow time for the history to download.
1. Check Apple’s service status
Before repeatedly signing out or changing settings, open Apple’s System Status page. Look for an incident involving iMessage, iCloud, or Apple Account services. If there is an outage, wait for service to recover; local resets will not repair an Apple-side interruption. Apple includes this check in its Messages troubleshooting guidance.

On the Mac
- Open Messages.
- Choose Messages > Settings, then select iMessage.
- Enable Messages in iCloud (Apple may label the control Enable Messages in iCloud).
- Check the phone numbers and email addresses selected for sending and receiving.
On the iPhone
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Tap See All or Show All, if displayed.
- Open Messages in iCloud and turn on Use on this iPhone. Older iOS releases may call this Sync this iPhone.
Both devices must use the same Apple Account. Apple says the first synchronization can take time; you can continue sending and receiving while older history downloads. Two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain may be required. Follow Apple’s Messages in iCloud setup instructions.

3. Match Send & Receive identities
On the iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive. On the Mac, open Messages > Settings > iMessage. Confirm that the same Apple Account, phone number, and intended email addresses are selected. A Mac can send from an email address while the iPhone uses a phone number, creating apparently separate threads or making messages seem absent.
4. Restore green-bubble SMS, MMS, and RCS messages
- Keep the iPhone powered on and connected to cellular service or the internet.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Text Message Forwarding.
- Turn on the switch for your Mac. If the Mac is not listed, verify that Messages on it is signed in to the same Apple Account and has iMessage configured.
- Send a new green-bubble test message.
SMS, MMS, and RCS support varies by carrier, country, and region. RCS does not necessarily provide the same history, read receipts, reactions, or delivery behavior as iMessage. Text Message Forwarding is separate from Messages in iCloud, so enabling one does not automatically repair the other.
5. Let synchronization complete
Keep the Mac online and, for a large history, connected to power. Leave Messages open, then quit and reopen it if the list does not refresh. Some Tahoe builds show a Sync Now control in Messages’ iCloud settings. If you see it, use it once; its presence and location are not guaranteed on every build. Do not repeatedly switch Messages in iCloud off and on, and do not delete conversations as a test: synchronized deletions can propagate to other devices, and Messages in iCloud is synchronization rather than an independent backup.

6. Fix sign-in or activation errors
- Confirm the Mac can browse the web and receive email.
- Check System Settings > General > Date & Time; enable automatic date, time, and time-zone settings.
- Install all offered macOS and iPhone updates, then restart both devices.
- Temporarily test on another trusted network. If a VPN, firewall, DNS filter, content filter, or security tool is installed, test with it temporarily paused or with an allowed configuration. Re-enable protection afterward; do not permanently weaken security.
- In Messages > Settings > iMessage, sign out of iMessage only. Restart the Mac, sign back in with the iPhone’s Apple Account, reselect Send & Receive addresses, and re-enable Messages in iCloud if necessary.
Apple’s activation guidance also provides an online route at apple.co/IMFT-mac. Sign in, choose Get Started, and follow the prompts. This is for activation or sign-in failures, not a general missing-history reset.
7. If it started after an iOS 26 or SIM change
Apple documents an iOS 26 problem where an inactive SIM containing the same number as the active SIM can block phone-number activation. Symptoms include green messages instead of iMessage, messages sent from an email address, or the same number appearing twice under Send & Receive. Update the iPhone to iOS 26.1 or later, or remove the inactive duplicate SIM. Then return to Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and activate the displayed number. 8. When to escalate
Do not delete files in ~/Library/Messages or rebuild a Messages database as a routine fix. Such steps can be destructive and require a current backup and an authoritative procedure. Contact Apple Support after System Status, account matching, Messages in iCloud, forwarding, updates, network checks, and iMessage re-authentication have all failed. Provide your macOS and iOS versions, Mac and iPhone models, exact error text, affected message type, and whether Messages in iCloud reports a current sync state. Full Apple Account sign-out on the Mac should be a last resort because it can disrupt Photos, iCloud Drive, Contacts, Notes, and other services.

Why are iMessages syncing but texts from Android are not?
Android conversations are usually SMS, MMS, or RCS rather than iMessage. Keep the iPhone on and enable Settings > Apps > Messages > Text Message Forwarding; carrier and regional support still apply.

Does Messages in iCloud need to be enabled on both devices?

How long should the first sync take?
Apple does not promise a fixed duration. Large histories, attachments, network speed, storage, and service load affect it. Keep the devices online and allow the download to finish.

Will signing out delete my messages?
Signing out of iMessage is generally less disruptive than signing out of the entire Apple Account, but read prompts carefully. Do not delete conversations or synchronized data while troubleshooting.
Why does the Mac show older conversations only?
The initial iCloud download may still be running, Messages in iCloud may be disabled on one device, or the Mac may be using a different account or address. Check those items before attempting advanced repairs.

Can a VPN stop iMessage from syncing?
A VPN or network-security filter can interfere with activation or Apple service connections. Temporarily test on another trusted network or with the VPN paused, then restore protection.

Is there a Terminal command to rebuild Messages?
There is no safe, general Terminal fix recommended here. Deleting Messages database files can cause data loss; back up and contact Apple Support for persistent local-database problems.
What if Tahoe is fully updated and the problem remains?
Complete the account, iCloud, Send & Receive, forwarding, network, date/time, and activation checks. If the issue persists, escalate to Apple with your versions, models, error text, and affected message type.
