If image thumbnails are missing in Windows File Explorer, first switch the folder to Medium, Large, or Extra large icons. For a OneDrive folder, also confirm that the file is available on this device and that the image meets OneDrive’s preview limits. A format-specific problem may require support from the viewer or an appropriate PowerToys File Explorer add-on.
This guide focuses on Windows File Explorer and OneDrive, the environments covered by Microsoft’s current support documentation. It separates local-folder display settings from cloud availability, unsupported formats, and service size limits so you can test the likely cause without changing the image itself.
Start by locating the failure
Open one image from a normal local folder, such as Pictures, and one image from the folder where thumbnails are missing. Note whether the problem affects every image or only one format, folder, or cloud service.

- Only a OneDrive folder fails: check the folder’s icon view, synchronization state, and OneDrive preview eligibility.
- Local and cloud folders both fail: begin with File Explorer’s view setting, then test whether the affected format is supported.
- Only one format fails: investigate support for that format in the viewer or an installed preview extension.
- Only very large files fail: check the cloud service’s documented size and dimension limits before changing Windows settings.
Cloud-managed paths can behave differently from local folders because the cloud provider may supply the thumbnail data. Microsoft PowerToys documentation makes this distinction explicit for File Explorer add-ons.

1. Change File Explorer to an icon view
Thumbnails are easiest to see when the folder uses icons large enough to contain a preview. In File Explorer:
- Open the folder containing the images.
- Select View on the command bar.
- Choose Medium icons, Large icons, or Extra large icons.
- Wait a moment for the folder to redraw, then test several files.
List and Details views are designed primarily for filenames and metadata, so they may not present a picture preview in the way you expect. Microsoft’s general File Explorer guidance describes the View control as the place to change between icons, lists, and details.
What a successful result looks like
Several supported images in the same folder should display miniature versions of their contents. If changing the view restores previews locally but not in OneDrive, continue with the cloud-specific checks below rather than treating the issue as a general Windows failure.
2. Check OneDrive availability
OneDrive files can be represented by cloud placeholders until their contents are available on the device. For a file that remains without a thumbnail:
- In File Explorer, open the OneDrive folder containing the image.
- Right-click the image (or the folder containing a group of images).
- Choose Always keep on this device.
- Allow OneDrive to finish downloading the file, then reopen or refresh the folder.
Microsoft’s OneDrive support instructions recommend this setting when medium-sized icons or larger do not restore a preview. It is a targeted check for local availability, not a guarantee that every sync error or unsupported file will acquire a thumbnail.

When local availability is the likely cause
If a local copy previews correctly while the cloud placeholder does not, the difference is the file’s availability or the provider’s thumbnail service. If both copies fail, return to the icon-view and format checks.
3. Verify that the file can be previewed
OneDrive does not preview every file. Microsoft’s support guidance states that previews or thumbnails are unavailable for PDFs and for images larger than 100 MB. A separate Microsoft supported-file-types page describes OneDrive.com image previews as available for images under 100 MB and approximately 12,000 × 8,000 pixels.
Those limits apply to Microsoft’s OneDrive surfaces, not to every local Windows folder or every cloud provider. The two Microsoft pages phrase the 100 MB boundary differently (“larger than” versus “less than”), so treat files near exactly 100 MB as borderline and check the service’s current behavior instead of assuming that a file at the boundary is eligible.
Check size and dimensions
- For a local file, open its Properties to see the byte size and image dimensions.
- For a OneDrive file, compare those values with the documented under-100 MB and approximately 12,000 × 8,000-pixel guidance.
- For a PDF, do not expect an image thumbnail from the OneDrive preview feature described above.
Do not re-save or resize an original solely to force a thumbnail until you have confirmed that the service limit is the actual cause; changing the asset can remove metadata or reduce quality.
4. Investigate format-specific support
JPG and PNG are commonly previewed, but a failure limited to SVG, PDF, Markdown, source code, or another specialized type can indicate that the current Windows viewer lacks a handler. Microsoft PowerToys File Explorer add-ons document thumbnail or preview support for selected types, including SVG and PDF, as well as Markdown and source code.

- Identify the exact extension that fails.
- Check whether the viewer or cloud service you are using lists that extension as supported.
- If an official PowerToys add-on supports it, install that add-on from Microsoft’s distribution channel and enable the relevant File Explorer extension.
- Test a small local sample before assuming the same handler will work for a cloud-managed path.
PowerToys is an optional, format-specific route. Its documentation does not make it a universal repair for ordinary JPG or PNG thumbnails, and it notes that cloud paths may depend on previews supplied by the cloud provider.
Choose the next check from the symptom

Troubleshooting when the basic steps do not work
The View menu changed, but no thumbnails appeared
Test the same folder with a known-good JPG or PNG. If none preview, compare it with a local folder. A failure in both locations points to the environment or viewer; a failure only in one cloud folder points back to sync availability or cloud preview rules. The documented guidance does not establish clearing a thumbnail cache, editing the registry, restarting Explorer, or installing a codec pack as a universal fix, so do not assume any of those actions will solve every case.
Only OneDrive placeholders remain
Use Always keep on this device and wait for the download to complete. If the file is already local and still has no preview, check whether it is a PDF, exceeds the documented image size, exceeds the approximate pixel dimensions, or uses a type that OneDrive does not list for preview.
A format works locally but not in OneDrive
This difference is expected when the cloud service supplies its own preview set. A local PowerToys handler does not prove that OneDrive.com, SharePoint, or Teams will generate the same thumbnail. Check the supported-file-type list for the specific Microsoft service.
The image is near 100 MB
Microsoft’s two support pages use slightly different wording for the boundary. Treat the value as approximate, keep the OneDrive context attached to it, and test a smaller derivative only if your workflow permits one. Do not describe the result as a Windows-wide limit.

Nothing previews after installing an extension
Confirm that the extension supports the exact file type and that you are testing a local copy. PowerToys documentation warns that cloud-managed paths may rely on provider-supplied preview data, so an add-on cannot force a cloud service to expose a thumbnail it does not provide.
Keep the diagnosis reproducible
For a team or automated workflow, record four properties for a failing file: storage location (local or cloud), extension, byte size, and pixel dimensions. Test one known-good local JPG or PNG beside it. This small comparison prevents a format problem from being mistaken for a folder-view problem and prevents a OneDrive limit from being generalized to Windows.
When you move a file between local storage and OneDrive, allow synchronization to finish before judging the thumbnail result. Capture the exact service surface as well: OneDrive in File Explorer, OneDrive.com, SharePoint, and Teams do not necessarily expose identical preview support.

Will these steps alter the original image?
No. Changing File Explorer’s view and marking a OneDrive file as available on the device change display or storage state; they do not edit the image pixels.
Can a local preview extension force OneDrive.com to show an unsupported type?
No. A local handler and a cloud service have separate support lists. OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams may depend on previews generated by Microsoft rather than by your Windows extension.
Should I treat exactly 100 MB as guaranteed to preview in OneDrive?
No. Microsoft’s guidance uses both “larger than 100 MB” and “less than 100 MB” wording, so files at the boundary should be treated as approximate and verified against the current service behavior.
