If HBO Max keeps buffering, first find out whether the trouble follows one title, one device, or your whole connection. The usual causes are unstable Wi-Fi, household network congestion, a misbehaving app or browser, or a temporary service or title issue. The service’s U.S. support pages now use the name Max, though your app or account may still show HBO Max.
Work through the checks below in order. They start with quick tests and avoid changing settings or buying faster internet until you know what is failing.
Start with these quick checks
- Play a different movie or episode in Max.
- Try another streaming app on the same device.
- Open Max on a second device connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- Check the connection speed near the time buffering happens.
- Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, video calls, and other streams.
- Restart the streaming device, modem, and router.
- Update Max and the device software.
- If possible, test Ethernet or a different network.
- Clear the app cache where the device supports it; reinstall Max only if the problem seems isolated to that device.
- Turn off a VPN or proxy temporarily and test again.
These tests matter because the best fix depends on the pattern. Reinstalling an app will not solve a household-wide connection problem, and upgrading an internet plan will not fix a corrupted app.
Use the symptoms to narrow it down
| What you see | More likely cause | Best next check |
|---|---|---|
| One title buffers, but other Max titles play | A title-specific or temporary playback problem | Try another episode or title, then test the problem title on another device. |
| Only one TV, stick, or phone buffers | That device’s app, software, Wi-Fi signal, or local storage | Update and restart it; test closer to the router or over Ethernet, then clear cache or reinstall. |
| Max buffers on every device, but other services work | A Max-specific service, account, session, or routing issue | Try a different title and network, sign out and back in, and check Max’s official support information. |
| Several streaming services and devices are slow | Home network, router, ISP congestion, or an outage | Pause other activity, restart network equipment, and run a wired speed test if possible. |
| HD plays but 4K buffers | Insufficient sustained bandwidth, Wi-Fi instability, or unsupported 4K setup | Reduce competing traffic, test Ethernet, and verify the title, plan, device, and display support 4K. |
| It works on a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi | Home router, Wi-Fi signal, congestion, or ISP connection | Test near the router or over Ethernet and contact the ISP if the wired connection is also poor. |
A hotspot is useful as a short diagnostic, not necessarily a practical permanent fix: cellular data limits and coverage can make it unsuitable for regular streaming. If you use an Xbox, Max’s support guidance also points users to the Xbox service status page when a console issue may be involved.

Check speed and stability—not just the speed-test number
Max says a download speed of at least 5 Mbps is needed for HD streaming and recommends 50 Mbps or more for the best 4K experience. These are guidance figures, not guarantees of smooth playback. A connection can meet them in a speed test and still suffer from brief dropouts, high latency, Wi-Fi interference, or congestion.
Run the test on the same network as the affected device and as close as possible to the time the problem occurs. A phone’s result does not prove that a TV in another room has a strong Wi-Fi connection. If practical, compare a wired test with Wi-Fi at the same time of day. A wired result can help separate a weak wireless signal from a problem with the internet service itself.
Several people streaming, gaming, uploading files, downloading updates, or joining video calls all share the household connection. Pause those activities briefly and see whether Max improves before considering a faster plan. If the speed fluctuates sharply, multiple devices disconnect, or every service buffers, the ISP or home network is a more likely place to investigate.

Improve Wi-Fi and restart the network properly
- Move the router closer to the TV or streaming player, if possible.
- Keep it in an open location rather than inside a cabinet, and reduce obstructions between it and the device.
- Pause large downloads, backups, updates, and other streams while testing.
- Connect the TV or player to the router with Ethernet if both have a suitable port. A wired connection can avoid weak or interfered-with Wi-Fi, though it cannot correct an ISP or service problem.
For a full power cycle, turn off the streaming device. Unplug the modem, router, and other network equipment from power for 30 seconds. Reconnect the modem first and allow about a minute for it to reconnect; then reconnect the router and wait for it to come back online. Turn the streaming device on and try Max again. Simply closing the app is not the same as restarting the network equipment.
Fix the Max app or streaming device
If other apps work on the same device and Max works elsewhere, focus on the affected device. Update Max and the device’s operating system, sign out of Max and back in, then fully restart the device. If the issue continues, clear the app cache where that option exists. Clearing app data or storage is more disruptive: it removes local app information and normally requires signing in again. Reinstalling is a later step for a problem that appears limited to one device.
iPhone or iPad
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, or try another Wi-Fi network. If playback improves on Wi-Fi, the cellular connection may be the limiting factor.
- Turn Airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then turn it off.
- Update Max in the App Store and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Sign out, power the device fully off for at least 10 seconds, restart, and sign back in.
- If Max still buffers while other apps and devices are fine, delete and reinstall Max.
Android phone or tablet
Update Max and Android, then restart the device. To clear cache, open Settings, search for Max, open its app settings, and choose Storage & cache or Storage > Clear cache. If the problem persists, Clear storage or Clear data may be available in the same area. Menu names vary by Android version; clearing storage/data resets local app information and usually signs you out. Reopen Max and sign in again.

Web browser on a computer
- Update your browser. Max recommends current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows, or Safari.
- Try a private or incognito window. If playback works there, an extension or saved browser data may be involved.
- Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, or media add-ons. If your browser configuration blocks third-party cookies, allowing them for Max may help; you do not necessarily need to enable them everywhere.
- Clear the browser cache and cookies, sign out of Max, and restart the computer.
- Try another supported browser, then test Ethernet if the computer is on Wi-Fi.
Fire TV
- Highlight the Max app tile, press the remote’s Menu button, and choose More Info > Update if an update is available.
- Check for Fire TV updates under Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update.
- Check the connection under Settings > Network; on supported menus, press the remote’s Play button to inspect network status.
- To clear local app data, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, select Max, then choose Clear Cache. If needed, choose Clear Data, knowing you may need to sign in again.
- Restart Fire TV at Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. Reinstall Max or try Ethernet if the issue remains limited to this device.
Fire OS menu names can differ by version.
Roku
Update the Max channel by highlighting it and pressing the remote’s Star button; labels and options can differ by Roku interface version. Update Roku at Settings > System > Software update > Check now, and test the connection at Settings > Network > Check connection. Restart Roku and the modem/router. If Max alone still fails on Roku, test another device and then consider reinstalling the channel.

Update Max through the App Store and Apple TV through Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. Sign out of Max, restart Apple TV and network equipment, then test again. Compare a speed test from a computer on the same network or a suitable speed-testing app. If your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port, test a wired connection. Reinstall Max if playback is normal on your other devices.

Game consoles and other devices
Install available Max app and system updates, restart the console, and compare Max with another app and device on the same network. If the console is the only device affected, reinstalling Max may help. If multiple services are affected, focus on the network and console connection instead. For an Xbox, check Xbox service status if other signs point to a console service problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If only 4K buffers
4K playback needs more sustained bandwidth than HD, and weak Wi-Fi is more likely to show up at higher bitrates. Max recommends 50+ Mbps for the best 4K experience, but that connection is shared with the rest of the household. Pause competing activity, try Ethernet, and verify that the title, plan, device, and display support the resolution you want.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMax’s U.S. plan information lists 4K Ultra HD on Premium where available; Basic with Ads and Standard are listed at Full HD 1080p. Availability also depends on the title and playback setup. Moving to a plan that permits 4K can enable that feature, but it cannot fix an unstable connection or weak Wi-Fi.

Check VPNs and browser add-ons
A VPN, proxy, corporate network, or privacy-routing service can interfere with playback or location checks. If you see a VPN warning or suspect one of these services, disconnect it temporarily, close and reopen Max, and test on your normal home connection. Do not use a VPN to bypass geographic restrictions. On a work, school, hotel, or public network, contact its administrator if playback is restricted. If the warning persists without a VPN, contact Max, your ISP, or the VPN provider as appropriate.
For browser playback, a private-window test is a useful way to identify extension conflicts. If it works there, disable extensions one at a time and retest instead of leaving every privacy or security setting changed.
When the problem may be on Max’s side
If several devices on your home network play other services normally but Max fails across multiple titles, try Max on a different network if available. If it fails on both networks and devices, the cause may be service-, account-, or routing-related rather than your TV or router. Check Max’s official support information and any relevant platform or provider status page; a third-party outage report alone does not confirm an outage. If only one title fails after these comparisons, tell Max support which title and episode are affected.
When to contact your ISP or Max
Contact your ISP if speed is below Max’s 5 Mbps HD minimum, speeds fluctuate substantially, multiple devices lose connection, all streaming services buffer, or even a wired test is poor. Repeated modem/router disconnects are also a reason to contact the provider.
Contact Max support if other services work but Max fails on multiple devices or networks, a particular title remains unplayable after testing, or updates, restarts, and app troubleshooting have not helped. If an error appears, record its exact wording or code. Before contacting support, note:
- Device make and model, and app or browser used.
- Whether one title or all Max titles are affected.
- Approximate times and how often playback stops.
- Whether you are on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular, a VPN, or a work, school, hotel, or public network.
- Your speed-test result and whether it was taken near the affected device.
- The exact error message or code, if shown.
That information helps support distinguish a device problem from a connection or service issue without asking you to repeat basic tests.
