If HBO Max/Max keeps buffering, freezing, or dropping picture quality, first check whether the problem affects one title, one device, or every streaming service. That quick comparison helps distinguish a title or app fault from weak Wi-Fi, household congestion, or a wider service issue—so you can try the fix that fits instead of buying new equipment. The service is generally called Max in current help pages, though some devices and markets may still show HBO Max or different menu labels.

Start with these quick checks

  1. Try another title. If just one episode or movie stalls, test a different title before changing network settings.
  2. Try another device on the same network. If Max plays normally there, focus on the first device, its app, or its Wi-Fi connection.
  3. Try another streaming service. If that buffers too, investigate your internet connection or home network. If only Max is affected, continue with Max-specific checks.
  4. Check for a known Max problem. Visit Max’s troubleshooting and support page. If a problem appears widespread and local checks do not help, wait and try again rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
  5. Update Max and your device. Install available app and operating-system updates, then close and reopen Max.
  6. Test the connection where playback happens. Run a speed test on the affected device or nearby, at the time lag occurs if possible. Pause other high-bandwidth activity and try Ethernet if available.
  7. Restart the streaming device and network equipment. See the safe restart sequence below.
  8. If only the Max app is affected, clear its cache where supported or reinstall it from the device’s official app store.

Max’s guidance lists 5 Mbps download speed as the minimum for HD and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K on relevant device-specific pages. These are speed thresholds, not guarantees: a fast test does not rule out Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, latency, congestion, or a device problem. See Max’s buffering guidance.

Use the symptom to narrow down the cause

What you notice Most useful first checks
Loading spinner or repeated pauses Test another service and device; check Wi-Fi stability, household traffic, and speed at the affected location.
Picture gets blurry or quality drops Check connection stability and competing network use. A brief speed test alone may miss fluctuations.
Video stutters but audio continues Compare another title and device. If other services also stutter, investigate the network; if not, update or reinstall Max.
Audio and video fall out of sync Close and reopen Max, restart the device, then test another title. If it happens only on one device, focus on its app or software.
Menus respond slowly, app freezes, or Max crashes Restart the device, update its software and Max, check available storage, then clear cache or reinstall. Faster internet may not fix a sluggish device interface.
One title or episode has the problem Try another title and test the affected one on another device. If other playback is normal, report the title-specific issue to Max.
Downloaded title lags Reconnect to the internet, check whether the download expired, and try streaming the same title. Delete and download the copy again if it appears damaged.

Check the connection, not just the speed number

Run a speed test on the same network as the affected device; testing at the TV or in the room where you watch is more useful than testing beside the router. Repeat it while the problem is happening, particularly if it tends to occur during busy evening hours. A speed test measures throughput at a moment in time. It does not fully show whether Wi-Fi is dropping packets, experiencing high latency, or fluctuating between tests.

Its powerful Integrated chipset ensures compatibility with a wide range of HDMI output devices. Easily switch between landscape and portrait modes for a versatile viewing experience. • App Limitations: Please be aware that certain apps with "HDCP" protocol, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, Hulu, Comcast TV, Xfinity, Vudu, Sky Go, BT Sport, may not be supported due to copyright protection.
  • Move the device closer to the router for a test and reduce obstructions where practical.
  • If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other one. The best result depends on distance, obstacles, and local interference.
  • Pause other heavy network use, such as 4K streaming, game downloads, cloud backups, video calls, large file transfers, or simultaneous streams.
  • Try Ethernet on a compatible TV, streaming box, computer, or console. If it fixes the problem, Wi-Fi coverage or interference is a stronger suspect.
  • Check that Ethernet and coaxial cables are firmly connected.

A strong Wi-Fi icon does not guarantee a clean, stable connection. If Ethernet is impractical, test another device in the same spot before considering new networking hardware. Max recommends a wired connection where practical; see its network troubleshooting steps.

Restart the modem, router, and streaming device

A power cycle can clear a temporary connection or app issue. It is not the same as resetting a router to factory settings.

  1. Close Max and turn off or unplug the affected streaming device.
  2. Unplug the modem and router from power.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Plug in the modem and wait about one minute for it to reconnect.
  5. Plug in the router and wait for the Wi-Fi network to return.
  6. Turn the streaming device back on, reopen Max, and test the same title.

Do not factory-reset the router as an early troubleshooting step. A factory reset can erase custom Wi-Fi names, passwords, and other settings. Use it only if simpler steps fail and you know how to restore the configuration.

Update Max, your device, or your browser

Outdated software can cause playback faults or compatibility problems. Update Max through the device’s official app store, then check for an operating-system or firmware update for the TV, streaming player, computer, phone, tablet, or console. Restart Max after updating. Menu labels vary by model and software version; use these as examples rather than universal paths:

  • Android: Play Store → search for Max → Update.
  • iPhone or iPad: App Store → search for Max → Update.
  • Fire TV: Highlight Max → press Menu → More Info → Update, if offered.
  • Roku: Highlight the Max channel → press Star → check for update.
  • PlayStation: Highlight Max → Options → Check for Update.
  • Samsung TV: Home → Apps → Settings icon → Updates.
  • Apple TV: App Store → search for Max → Update.

Install Max only from the official store for your device. Max says unofficial sources for the Android app are unsupported; check its supported-device information if an older device cannot find or update the app.

Fix Max in a web browser

For Max.com, Max recommends current versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows, and Safari. Update your browser, close and reopen it, and try another supported browser. If the second browser works, the cause is likely local to the first browser rather than your internet plan.

  1. Open a private window as a temporary diagnostic test. If Max works there, a cookie, extension, cached site data, or browser setting may be interfering.
  2. Disable extensions one at a time, starting with ad blockers or extensions that alter playback or page scripts. Test Max after each change.
  3. Check that cookies needed for site sign-in and playback are allowed. Private browsing is not a permanent fix if it blocks cookies or authentication.
  4. If the problem continues across browsers, test another device on the same network and compare another streaming service.

Do not permanently weaken browser security just to troubleshoot. If a browser fix is temporary, check whether extensions re-enable themselves, cookies are automatically deleted, or security software is filtering traffic.

Clear cache or reinstall the Max app

Start with a cache clear if the platform offers it. Cache controls vary, especially on televisions. Clearing app data is more aggressive: it can remove local preferences and sign you out, so be ready to log in again.

Android phone or tablet

  1. Open Settings and search for Max.
  2. Open Max’s app settings, then choose Storage & cache or Storage.
  3. Select Clear cache and reopen Max.
  4. If that does not help, Clear storage or Clear data, then sign in again.

Amazon Fire TV

  1. Open Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications.
  2. Select Max → Force Stop → Clear Cache.
  3. If needed, choose Clear Data; this may sign you out.
  4. Reopen Max and test playback.

If playback fails only in Max, the app crashes, or clearing cache does not help, reinstall the app:

Device Checks to try
Fire TV Update Max and Fire TV; check network; clear cache (and data if necessary); restart; reinstall.
Roku Update the Max channel and Roku software; use Settings → Network → Check connection; compare playback on another device.
Apple TV Update Max and tvOS; try Ethernet if available; reinstall Max; compare with another device.
Android TV or Google TV Update Max and device software; try Ethernet; reinstall Max from Google Play.
Samsung TV Update Max and TV firmware; test network; try Ethernet; reinstall from Samsung’s app store. Cache controls vary by model.
VIZIO TV Check Max and TV updates; run Network Test or Test Connection; pause other network activity.
Hisense VIDAA Update Max through the VIDAA App Store; check firmware and connection speed on the same network.
PlayStation Update Max and system software; test the network; reinstall Max; compare on another device.
Provider-supplied device, such as Xfinity or Cox Restart the box and network equipment, then test Max on another supported device to see whether the box is the issue.

If menus are sluggish across the TV’s home screen and other apps, the television may be low on storage, overloaded, overheating, or struggling with its operating system. Restart it fully, update firmware, close background apps if possible, and compare another app. A separate supported streaming player may help if the TV itself is the limitation, but it will not fix an unstable internet connection.

If a downloaded show or movie lags

Downloaded playback is separate from streaming and can have its own failure modes. Check whether the download has expired; some expired downloads need an internet connection to renew. Reconnect, close and reopen Max, then retry. If the downloaded copy still stutters, delete it and download it again, or stream the same title to compare. Max’s download help covers expired downloads and related troubleshooting.

When to contact Max or your internet provider

Contact Max if the issue persists only in Max after testing another title, device, and supported browser, or if you see a recurring error. Contact your ISP if multiple services and devices struggle, especially when a wired test is also poor or performance repeatedly falls during busy periods. Avoid upgrading your internet plan or buying a router based on one playback failure.

Before contacting support, record:

  • Device make and model, and its operating-system or firmware version.
  • Max app version or browser name and version, if available.
  • The title, season, and episode; approximate time of failure; and any on-screen error code.
  • Speed-test result and whether you tested near the affected device.
  • Whether another Max title, another device, another streaming service, or Ethernet changes the result.

Keep the error message or code rather than repeatedly retrying without noting it. Max’s error troubleshooting page recommends trying another device and providing error details when contacting support.
