A greyed-out Apple Music track can mean a catalog song is no longer available, a restriction blocks it, a purchase belongs to another Apple Account, or a local file has not synced correctly. The right fix depends on whether one song or many are affected, which devices show the problem, and where the music came from. Start by checking the message and the song’s source; don’t delete your library or reset Sync Library as a first step.
First, narrow down the cause
Before changing settings, check four things:
- How many tracks? If only explicit songs are grey, check content restrictions. If many songs are affected, look at the account and Sync Library.
- Which devices? A song that plays on your Mac but not your iPhone points toward a sync or device setting. If it is unavailable everywhere, check its catalog availability or ownership.
- What kind of music is it? Apple Music catalog tracks, iTunes Store purchases, and imported files have different fixes.
- What message appears? “This song is not currently available in your country or region” and “No Longer Available” suggest checking the current catalog before troubleshooting sync.
Also consider whether the problem began after changing Apple Accounts or regions, replacing a device, changing Screen Time settings, or turning Sync Library on or off. Apple’s greyed-out song troubleshooting guide covers these causes and their fixes.
Try these checks in order
- Confirm the Apple Account. Make sure the device uses the account associated with the Apple Music subscription. For a purchase, check the account that bought the song; it may differ from the account used for a family subscription.
- Search Apple Music for the song. If it appears in the current catalog, the library may contain a stale entry. If it does not, it may have been removed or may not be licensed in your region.
- Check restrictions. If explicit tracks are affected, allow explicit music in content restrictions.
- Check whether the song is hidden. Unhide it in your Apple Account or Music account settings, then return to the library.
- Check Sync Library. Confirm that it is enabled on every device where you expect the library to appear, and that those devices use the same account.
- Update the Cloud Library and inspect Cloud Status on the Mac or Windows computer that holds the source library.
- Only then consider a Sync Library reset. Read the data warning below first.

If the song is unavailable in your country or region
Search for the song or album directly in Apple Music while signed in to your current account and region. If a playable version appears, remove only the greyed-out library entry and add the available version. A fresh search that finds the song is a useful clue that the library entry may be stale, though it does not guarantee that re-adding will resolve every sync issue.

A VPN, reinstall, or repeated sign-in cannot restore catalog access that is genuinely unavailable under regional licensing. Don’t change your account region just to test a track: a region change can affect subscriptions, purchases, and other services.

If explicit songs are greyed out
Check the device’s Screen Time or content-restriction settings and allow explicit music. Menu names vary by operating-system version; if you cannot find the option, search Settings for “Content Restrictions” or “Music.” If clean versions play but explicit versions do not, a restriction is a more likely explanation than a broken Sync Library.
If it is an iTunes Store purchase
A purchase is tied to the Apple Account that made it. Confirm that account on the device; on a Mac or Windows computer, authorize the computer to play iTunes Store purchases. If the song is missing, look in the purchased-music section and redownload it. Also check for hidden purchases before assuming you need to buy the track again. A subscription may provide access to Apple Music, but it does not transfer a purchase from another account.
If the song is hidden
Look in your Apple Account or Music account settings for hidden purchases or hidden music, then unhide the track. Hiding a purchase is not the same as deleting it. Once it is visible again, return to your library and try playing or downloading it.

If songs are not syncing between devices
Sync Library is available with an Apple Music subscription or iTunes Match. Check that every device is signed in to the same relevant account, Sync Library is enabled on each one, and each device has an internet connection. Allow the computer with the original library to finish its cloud update before judging whether other devices are missing tracks.
On a Mac, open Music, choose File > Library > Update Cloud Library. In Apple Music for Windows, open Sidebar Actions at the top of the sidebar, choose Library, then select Update Cloud Library. Labels and switch locations can vary with app and operating-system versions. Apple currently calls the feature Sync Library; older instructions may call it iCloud Music Library.
Use Cloud Status to diagnose computer-library problems
On a Mac or Windows computer, open the Music app or Apple Music for Windows and select Songs in the sidebar. Use the table or view options to display Cloud Status and Cloud Download. These columns can show whether a track matched, uploaded, is waiting, has an error, is unavailable, or cannot be located. Use the result to choose the next step rather than treating every grey track as a subscription problem.

A cloud-download icon is not the same as grey text: it generally indicates that a track can be downloaded but is not stored locally. Interface symbols can differ, so check the track’s status and whether it actually plays.

If an imported or local file is missing
A CD rip or a track added from a folder may exist only on your computer; it is not necessarily an Apple Music catalog item. Search the computer for the original audio file, including any external drive that normally holds your library. If you find it, drag it into Music on Mac or Apple Music for Windows, wait for the app to process it, and update Cloud Library. Check Cloud Status again afterward.
Do not delete the original file just because the app shows a grey library entry. The entry can remain even when its audio file has been moved, renamed, or disconnected with an external drive. Keep the source file until you have confirmed the repaired track is accessible where you need it.

iPhone and iPad checks
- Confirm the Apple Account used for Apple Music and, for purchases, the account that bought the song.
- Check that Sync Library is enabled in the device’s Music settings. The exact path and label can vary by iOS or iPadOS version; search Settings for “Sync Library” if needed.
- If only explicit tracks are affected, allow explicit content in Screen Time restrictions.
- If a catalog song is available in a fresh search, remove the stale library version and add the current one.
- Once the library entry is fixed, download the song again if you want an offline copy.
Mac and Windows checks
- Update Cloud Library using the app-specific steps above.
- Show Cloud Status and Cloud Download in the Songs view to identify an upload, location, or availability issue.
- For purchases, verify the purchasing Apple Account and authorize the computer.
- For imported tracks, locate and preserve the original file, re-import it if necessary, and check its cloud status.
Reset Sync Library only as a last resort
If the account, restrictions, catalog availability, local files, and Cloud Status all check out, turning Sync Library off and back on may prompt a resynchronization. It is not a guaranteed fix, and it should not be the first troubleshooting step.
Before you do it, preserve imported music and confirm that the original audio files still exist on the Mac or PC. Apple warns that Apple Music is not a backup service; turning off Sync Library removes downloaded music from devices. This does not necessarily erase original files stored on a computer, but those files still need to be protected separately. Use a reliable internet connection and allow time for a large library to rebuild. See Apple’s guidance on greyed-out songs and Sync Library before proceeding.
Avoid deleting the entire library or removing many tracks at once. That can discard local references or metadata, create duplicates, and make the original problem harder to identify. Test changes on one affected song first.

When Apple Music cannot restore the song
If a track has been removed from the catalog or is not licensed in your region, Apple Music may not be able to restore that version. Look for another available release or, if offered, a legitimate store purchase. If you already purchased it, verify the purchasing account, hidden-purchase status, and computer authorization before buying it again. If you own a local copy, preserve the file and add it to your library from the computer that stores it.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if a confirmed purchase cannot be redownloaded, authorization repeatedly fails with the correct account, Sync Library will not activate, or a large library continues to show cloud errors. Support is also a reasonable next step after a recent account or region change or when devices disagree about which account owns a track.
If many songs become unavailable suddenly, check Apple System Status before making destructive changes; a service issue may be temporary.
