Chrome Error Code 7 means Chrome could not download an update. The accompanying 0x80040801 value is associated with Google Update’s “no network” condition: the updater could not reach its service, possibly because of a firewall, proxy, VPN, DNS filter, security product, damaged updater, or an administrator policy. Chrome may still browse normally because the browser and its updater do not necessarily use the connection in the same way.
Restart Windows, retry the About Google Chrome page, check network and security filtering, then use Google’s official Windows standalone installer. Reinstall only after protecting locally stored Chrome data.
What Error 7: 0x80040801 means
Google classifies Chrome Error 7 (and Error 12) as an update-download failure. Chromium’s Google Update code associates 0x80040801 with a no-network message involving internet access or firewall access for GoogleUpdate.exe. This is a Chrome/Google Update error, not a Windows Update error. If the message says “system level,” it generally indicates that the machine-wide updater was involved, although the exact wording and installation context matter.
The code does not prove that the whole computer is offline. A web page can load in Chrome while a proxy, VPN, endpoint-security product, captive portal, DNS filter, or damaged updater blocks Google’s update process.

Before changing Chrome
- Check Settings > System > About and confirm the PC runs Windows 10 or later. Google’s current support page lists Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 as unsupported for current Chrome updates.
- Determine whether the computer belongs to a company or school. A policy may intentionally control Chrome updates.
- If you might uninstall Chrome, confirm that important bookmarks, passwords and other data are synchronized to your Google Account or backed up. Data that exists only in a local profile needs separate care, especially when several Windows users share the computer.
- Keep another browser available so you can download an installer if Chrome cannot.
Fix 1: Restart Windows and retry About Chrome
Google recommends a reboot because an interrupted installation can leave Google Update in a temporary bad state.
- Restart Windows and sign in again.
- Open Chrome, select the three-dot menu, choose Help, then About Google Chrome (wording can vary slightly by release).
- Leave the page open while Chrome checks, downloads and installs the update.
- Select Relaunch if Chrome offers it, then return to the About page to verify the update.
Fix 2: Separate a Windows connection problem from an updater problem
Test outside Chrome
Open another browser or application and visit several sites. If multiple applications cannot connect, repair Windows networking first. Reinstalling Chrome will not fix a failing Wi-Fi connection, captive-portal sign-in, or system-wide DNS problem.
If ordinary browsing works but the update fails, focus on controls that can treat background programs differently from browser traffic.
Review proxy, VPN and filtering
- Complete any captive-portal sign-in required by the network.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN and retry, or test on a different trusted network.
- Check whether a corporate or school proxy requires authentication that Google Update cannot provide.
- Review DNS-filtering, parental-control and HTTPS-inspection products.
- In firewall, antivirus and endpoint-security settings, ensure update traffic is not blocked. Google specifically names
tools.google.comanddl.google.comas domains that must be reachable.
Use your security product’s documented, narrow allow-rule procedure. If you pause protection to test, do so only briefly, avoid untrusted sites, and turn it back on immediately. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.

Google does not provide one universal firewall rule because every product has a different interface. Enterprise troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking required update URLs and collecting update logs when escalating: Chrome Browser Enterprise updates technical document.
Fix 3: Install Chrome with Google’s standalone Windows installer
The normal web/bootstrap installer downloads additional files during setup. A standalone installer contains more of the installation payload and is useful when the in-browser updater or bootstrapper cannot complete, although it can still be blocked by policy, permissions, security software, disk space or a damaged installation.
- Open another working browser if necessary.
- Download Chrome only from Google’s official Chrome download page.
- Run the Windows installer and approve the administrator prompt only if you trust the source and have authority to install software.
- Restart Chrome and check Help > About Google Chrome again.
Google specifically recommends trying the Windows standalone installer when the ordinary download or reinstall route continues to fail.
Fix 4: Turn off Windows Compatibility Mode
Compatibility Mode is unsupported by Chrome and can make a supported Windows installation appear incompatible.
- Right-click the Chrome shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Select Apply, then OK, and retry the update.
If the shortcut points to a different Chrome installation, repeat the check for the shortcut you actually use.

Fix 5: Reinstall Chrome safely
Reserve a reinstall for persistent installation corruption or when the standalone installer cannot repair the existing copy. It will not bypass an administrator policy, proxy authentication requirement, blocked Google domain, unsupported Windows version or security product restriction.
- Verify Chrome Sync or make a separate backup of locally stored bookmarks and other essential profile data. Do not assume uninstalling always deletes every profile, and do not assume it always preserves local data.
- Close Chrome and uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or the equivalent Apps view in your Windows release).
- Confirm the PC meets Google’s Windows requirement.
- Download Chrome again from Google and reinstall it. Use the standalone Windows installer if the regular route fails.
- Sign in again, allow synchronization to complete, and verify bookmarks, passwords and extensions before deleting any backup.
Chrome’s installer uses Google Update and Windows installation state, including registry data; avoid deleting Google folders, services or registry keys manually unless a trained administrator is following a documented recovery plan. Technical installer details are described by Chromium.

Fix 6: Managed computers and administrator restrictions
On a work or school computer, an update failure may be intentional or enforced. Common examples include a Chrome update policy, configuration-management deployment, lack of administrator rights, endpoint-security controls or a nonstandard software-distribution process.
- If Chrome says updates are disabled by an administrator, do not override the setting.
- Ask IT which Chrome version and update channel the organization supports.
- Provide the exact error, Chrome version, Windows edition/build, network type, proxy or VPN status and any relevant update logs.
- Use the organization’s support channel rather than changing Group Policy, registry values or services yourself.
If the standalone installer also fails
At that point, compare the failure with the likely cause:

Error 7 alone does not prove malware. Investigate it when update domains are redirected, proxy settings change unexpectedly, several browsers lose connectivity, or security software reports tampering.

For escalation, record the complete message, Chrome version, Windows edition and build, whether another browser connects, active proxy/VPN/security software, administrator status and whether the device is managed. Then contact your organization’s IT team or the Chrome Help Community.

- Do not treat
0x80040801as a Microsoft Windows Update code or follow unrelated Windows servicing fixes. - Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall or endpoint protection.
- Do not delete Google Update registry keys, services or folders as a first step.
- Do not use third-party “Chrome repair” or registry-cleaner utilities when Google’s installer is available.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall Chrome on Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 expecting current updates; those systems are outside Google’s current support boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chrome Error 7: 0x80040801 a virus?
No. It is an update-download and Google Update network error. Malware is only one possible explanation when you also see redirects, changed proxy settings, blocked domains or other signs of tampering.
Does this error mean Windows Update is broken?
No. This code belongs to Chrome’s updater. Windows networking, security software or policy can cause it, but Microsoft Windows Update troubleshooting does not decode this Chrome-specific value.
Can I fix it without uninstalling Chrome?
Usually. Restart, retry About Google Chrome, check proxy/VPN/firewall filtering, and try Google’s standalone installer before considering an uninstall.
Will reinstalling Chrome delete bookmarks and passwords?
It depends on where the data is stored and how the uninstall is performed. Verify Sync or make a backup first; do not rely on an assumption that local profiles are always preserved or always removed.

Why can Chrome browse normally while its update fails?
The browser and Google Update can use different processes and be handled differently by proxies, VPNs, DNS filters and security software, so successful browsing does not prove updater access.
Should I disable antivirus to install the update?
Only use a brief, controlled pause as a diagnostic test if your security vendor documents that procedure, then re-enable protection immediately. A narrow allow rule is the proper long-term fix.
What if I still use Windows 7, 8 or 8.1?
Google currently lists Windows 10 and later for current Chrome updates. Upgrading Windows or moving to a supported device is more durable than repeatedly reinstalling Chrome.
Are third-party Chrome repair tools necessary?
No. They are not part of Google’s normal fix path and can introduce unwanted changes. Use Google’s installer and your organization’s or security vendor’s supported controls.
