If Game Base will not open, stays on a loading spinner, or shows no friends and parties, first check PlayStation Network status. If no outage is reported, restart the PS5, test its connection, update system software, and refresh your PSN session. Most cases are caused by a temporary PSN, network, account-session, or local system-software problem—not by an installed game.
Try these fixes in order
- Check PlayStation Network status.
- Restart the PS5.
- Test the internet connection.
- Install any available PS5 system-software update.
- Sign out of PSN, restart the console, and sign back in.
- Restore licenses.
- Use Safe Mode to clear the system-software cache.
- Use Safe Mode to rebuild the database.
- Test another account or network.
- Restore default settings only if necessary.
- Contact PlayStation Support before resetting the console.
What “Game Base not loading” tells you
Game Base is a PS5 system feature connected to PlayStation Network, your internet connection, the signed-in account, and the console’s system software. The symptom can therefore have several causes:
- The Game Base card does not open after pressing the PS button.
- The card opens but remains on a loading spinner.
- Friends, parties, or messages do not appear.
- The PS5 says it cannot connect to PlayStation Network.
- Party features fail while other PSN features continue to work.
- The problem affects only one account or returns after Rest Mode.
- Game Base works in the PlayStation App but not on the console.
- The issue occurs only on one Wi-Fi network or began after a system update.
These distinctions matter. A failure for every account points more strongly to PSN, the network, or the console. A failure affecting only one account suggests a session, privacy, family-management, or account-status issue.
1. Check whether PlayStation Network is down
Open the official PlayStation Network status page and look for incidents involving Gaming and Social, Account Management, friends, messaging, or related services.

If Sony reports an outage, wait for the service to recover. Rebuilding the database, changing DNS settings, or resetting the PS5 cannot repair a platform-wide service interruption. A successful console internet test also does not prove that every PSN social service is operating normally.
2. Restart the PS5 completely
For a normal restart:
- Press the PS button.
- Select Power.
- Choose Restart PS5.
- After the console starts, press the PS button and open Game Base.
If that does not help, choose Power > Turn Off PS5. Wait until the power indicator is fully off, leave the console off briefly, and turn it on again. Do not routinely unplug the PS5 while it is running. Disconnect power only if the console is frozen or unresponsive, and wait until the indicator is off first.
If Game Base works after a full shutdown but fails again after Rest Mode, temporarily avoid Rest Mode while diagnosing the problem. You can also restart the router and then test the console again. This isolates a possible resume or network-session problem without proving that Rest Mode itself is defective.

3. Test the PS5 internet connection
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select Connection Status.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
Record the results for internet access, PSN sign-in, NAT type, download speed, and upload speed. If the test fails, restart the modem or router and try again. If Wi-Fi is unstable, move the console closer to the router or test with wired Ethernet.
A temporary mobile hotspot can also help identify a home-network problem, provided your carrier and data allowance permit it. If Game Base works on the hotspot but not on home Wi-Fi, investigate the router, Wi-Fi interference, NAT, DNS behavior, or ISP routing. Do not start with port forwarding or custom DNS; those changes are unnecessary for many users and can complicate diagnosis.
If Game Base works over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, the problem is more likely related to wireless conditions or the router’s Wi-Fi configuration than to the PS5 account.
4. Update PS5 system software
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Choose Update System Software if an update is available.
Keep enough free storage available for the update. If a normal update fails, retry it before using Safe Mode. Sony also documents a USB update method for consoles that cannot update normally in the interface; use the files and procedure from the official PS5 system-software guide.

Do not assume that an issue appearing after an update proves the update caused it. The timing is useful evidence, but the failure may still be a session, network, or local database problem.
5. Refresh your PSN session
Sign out of the affected PlayStation Network account, restart the PS5, and sign in again. This is especially useful when friends or parties fail to populate, other online features behave inconsistently, or Game Base works for another account on the same console.
Signing in again cannot fix a PSN outage, account suspension, family restriction, or server-side account problem. If the account cannot sign in, use PlayStation’s account-support process rather than repeatedly changing settings on the console.
Check account restrictions
If only one child account or family member is affected, review family-management and privacy settings controlling friends, parties, messaging, and other social features. Also consider an account restriction, suspension, or two-factor-authentication problem. Selective social failures should not automatically be treated as cache corruption.
Record any visible error code and check the relevant entry in Sony’s PS5 error-code directory.
6. Restore licenses
Restoring licenses is a low-risk account-related step. It is most relevant if Game Base problems occur alongside padlock icons, missing digital content, license-confirmation errors, or a recent console-sharing change.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Select Other.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Confirm the operation.
This does not universally repair Game Base, but it can refresh account and entitlement information. Sony documents the procedure in its PS5 license troubleshooting guidance.

Review Console Sharing and Offline Play only when relevant
If the issue is tied to shared purchases or a particular console configuration, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. If appropriate, disable it, restart the PS5, and enable it again.

It will not fix a PSN outage and should not be the first response to a general Game Base loading problem.
7. Clear the PS5 system-software cache
Sony identifies cache clearing as a Safe Mode option for system-feature problems and performance drops. It is a non-destructive step in this troubleshooting sequence.
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- Wait until the power indicator is off.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose Clear System Software Cache.
- Let the PS5 restart, then test Game Base.
Cache clearing cannot repair an active PSN outage or an account restriction. If it changes nothing, continue to the database repair option rather than repeating it indefinitely.
8. Rebuild the PS5 database
If clearing the cache fails, enter Safe Mode again using the same procedure and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database.

It may help when local indexing or system-feature data is damaged or inconsistent. It is not equivalent to a factory reset and does not mean every game must be reinstalled.
The duration depends on the amount and condition of data on the console. Do not turn off the PS5 during the operation. Database rebuilding cannot fix a server outage, a suspended account, or a network that cannot reach PSN.

9. Test another account or network
These tests help identify the failing layer:
| Result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Game Base fails for every account | PSN, network, console software, or hardware | Check status, test the network, update, and use Safe Mode |
| Only one account is affected | Account session, privacy, family settings, or account status | Sign out and in; review restrictions and contact account support if needed |
| It works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi | Router, ISP, NAT, DNS, or Wi-Fi conditions | Try Ethernet, restart the router, and investigate the home connection |
| It works in the PlayStation App but not on PS5 | Console session, local software, or console-specific service path | Restart, update, sign in again, and use Safe Mode |
| It fails with license or padlock messages | Account entitlement or console-sharing configuration | Restore licenses and review Console Sharing and Offline Play |
Do not create a new account simply to bypass the issue. Purchases, subscriptions, trophies, saves, and friends are tied to the original account.
10. Restore Default Settings—without resetting the PS5
Use this advanced step only after checking PSN status, restarting, testing the network, updating, refreshing the account session, restoring licenses, and trying Safe Mode repairs.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Select Reset Options.
- Select Restore Default Settings.
Sony states that Restore Default Settings does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data, but it changes selected console settings. You may need to configure network, display, and other preferences again. See Sony’s Restore Default Settings guide before confirming.
- Restore Default Settings: changes selected settings without deleting user or game data.
- Reset PS5: deletes user data and is not a routine early fix.
- Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): deletes user data and removes the system software, requiring Sony’s official reinstallation files and procedure.
Back up important data before any data-erasing operation, and contact PlayStation Support before choosing either reset option.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact Sony if Game Base remains unusable after cache clearing and database rebuilding, if the PS5 cannot connect to PSN while other devices work, or if the same account fails across multiple networks or consoles. Escalate sooner if:
- An error code appears repeatedly.
- The issue began after a failed system update.
- The PS5 freezes, shuts down, overheats, or reports storage errors.
- Multiple system features—not just Game Base—are failing.
Prepare the PS5 model, system-software version, PSN online ID, exact symptom, error code or message, network type, steps already attempted, and the date and time of failed attempts. Sony’s support guidance asks for detailed descriptions, reproducible steps, error messages, and timestamps.
Quick Recap
What not to do first
- Do not factory-reset the PS5 before checking PSN status and trying non-destructive repairs.
- Do not delete or reinstall games: Game Base is a system-social feature, not a game installation feature.
- Do not treat a successful internet test as proof that PSN social services are working.
- Do not change DNS settings or configure port forwarding unless testing establishes a network-specific problem.
- Do not assume restoring licenses fixes every Game Base failure.
- Do not unplug a running console as a routine restart method.
