If Firefox saves only the visible viewport, open the page, choose Take Screenshot from the right-click menu (or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS), then select Save full page. If that command is missing, restore the Screenshot button via Menu > More Tools > Customize Toolbar. Pages built with framesets, independently scrolling iframes, Firefox’s own internal screens, or special-permission sites can still defeat a full-page capture; the Developer Tools and Web Console fallbacks below usually identify or work around the problem.
Use Firefox’s built-in full-page capture first
- Load the target page in a normal Firefox tab and wait for its content to finish rendering.
- Right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot. You can instead press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- In the screenshot panel, select Save full page, not Save visible.
- Download the image to Firefox’s default download folder or use the panel’s copy-to-clipboard action.
“Save full page” asks Firefox to capture the document beyond the current viewport, so you do not need to drag the page manually. It is an integrated feature and does not require an extension.
When the Screenshot command is missing
Restore the toolbar button
- Open the Firefox application menu.
- Choose More Tools, then Customize Toolbar.
- Find Screenshot in the available controls and drag it to the toolbar.
- Choose Done, then click the new Screenshot button and select Save full page.
If the context-menu item and toolbar control are both absent, continue with the Developer Tools method rather than repeatedly reinstalling extensions.
Check whether the page itself prevents a complete capture
Test a simple, publicly accessible HTML page. If that page works, the original site’s structure or permissions are more likely than a broken Firefox installation.

Known exceptions
- Firefox internal pages: Home, Preferences and other browser-owned screens are not ordinary web documents and may not be capturable.
- Special-permission pages: Mozilla documents restrictions on sites such as addons.mozilla.org.
- HTML framesets: Legacy
<frameset>layouts can prevent a reliable top-level full-page image. - Independently scrolling iframes: The outer document may be captured while content that scrolls inside an iframe is omitted or clipped. The iframe is a separate document with its own scroll area.
Capture an iframe separately
Scroll the pointer over the embedded frame and try the screenshot command there. If Firefox still captures only the parent page, open the frame’s URL in a new tab when the site permits it, then run Save full page on that tab. For an application whose frame URL is not exposed or requires a session, use the Developer Tools element capture described below, or capture the parent and frame as separate assets.
Do not assume that a very tall page is automatically broken. Mozilla does not publish one universal maximum pixel height for all Firefox versions, so a failure at an extreme document height should be diagnosed by testing shorter pages and another Firefox profile rather than by relying on an undocumented limit.
Developer Tools fallback
Firefox Developer Tools has its own full-page screenshot control and can work when the normal panel is unavailable.
- Open Developer Tools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (use Command+Option+I on macOS).
- Open Developer Tools Settings (the gear icon).
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Close Settings. Click the camera/screenshot icon in the Developer Tools toolbar.
- Firefox saves the resulting image to the Downloads folder. Check the filename and dimensions before using it in documentation or a bug report.
This route is still built into Firefox and is useful when a customized toolbar, context menu, or screenshot panel has stopped appearing.

Web Console command-line fallback
For repeatable captures, open the Web Console and run:
screenshot filename.png --fullpage
- Open the target page.
- Open Developer Tools and select the Web Console tab.
- Enter the command, replacing
filename.pngwith the name you want. - Press Enter and inspect the saved PNG in Firefox’s Downloads folder.
The --fullpage flag requests the entire page rather than only the visible viewport. A console error, a missing file, or a visibly short image is useful evidence for the troubleshooting branches below.
Diagnose failures after a Firefox update
Rule out extensions and profile customisation
Choose Firefox’s Troubleshoot Mode (also called Safe Mode in some support wording) and repeat the capture on a normal public page. This temporarily disables extensions and selected customizations. If full-page capture works there, re-enable extensions one at a time until the conflicting add-on or setting is found.
Check the screenshot component preference
In the address bar, open about:config, acknowledge the warning, and search for screenshots.browser.component.enabled. Record its current value before changing anything. If it is disabled, restoring the default enabled state and restarting Firefox can bring back the component. Enterprise policies or profile management may override this preference; in that case, test a fresh profile or ask the administrator rather than forcing a policy change.
Use a clean profile as a confirmation
Create or launch a temporary Firefox profile and test the same public page. A working capture in the clean profile points to profile data, toolbar customisation, an extension, or a policy in the original profile—not to the page itself.
Choose the right workaround
| Method | Best use | Output and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Context menu or shortcut | Fast everyday capture | Download or clipboard from the screenshot panel; affected by restricted pages and complex frame layouts. |
| Customize Toolbar | The Screenshot command disappeared | Restores the same built-in panel without an extension. |
| Developer Tools button | Main UI fails or you need a separate control | Saves to Downloads; available after enabling the toolbox button. |
| Web Console | Repeatable or script-like manual work | PNG requested with screenshot filename.png --fullpage; still subject to page permissions and rendering. |
| Separate iframe capture | Content scrolls inside an embedded document | May require opening the frame URL or producing multiple images. |
Make the capture reliable
Wait for lazy content
Scroll through the page once before capturing when images or sections load on demand. Confirm that charts, fonts and below-the-fold images are visible. A screenshot cannot include pixels the page has not rendered yet.
Check the rendering state
- Dismiss consent dialogs, newsletter popups and chat overlays if they cover the content you need.
- Wait for network activity and animations to settle; pause a video or carousel when its exact frame matters.
- Use a normal public URL for diagnosis before testing authenticated dashboards or browser-owned pages.
- Verify that the saved file opens and that its bottom edge contains the expected footer or final section.
Respect sensitive content
Full-page images can include account names, tokens displayed in a dashboard, personal data and content below the fold. Redact those areas before sharing a file or uploading it to a ticket.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, so a server or script can capture a URL without configuring Firefox.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The service can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. You can turn each cleanup step off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed as clean shots; response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
For automation, its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Options include full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors/delays/network idle, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTL, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

Test Troubleshoot Mode, inspect screenshots.browser.component.enabled, and try a clean profile. These steps distinguish an extension or profile issue from an installation-wide problem.
The bottom of the page is blank
Wait for lazy content and network requests, then retry. If only one site fails, test its frames, permissions and scripts; compare it with a simple public HTML page.
An embedded document is cut off
Capture the iframe’s own URL or use element capture in Developer Tools. A top-level screenshot does not necessarily include an inner scrolling document’s full height.
The image is missing after a console command
Confirm that the command ran in Web Console, that the filename is writable, and that you are checking Firefox’s Downloads folder. Run it again with a simple filename such as page.png and inspect any console error.

Can I capture Firefox’s New Tab or Settings page?
Those are internal browser pages, not ordinary web documents, and Firefox may refuse to capture them. Use a normal public HTML page to verify that the screenshot feature itself works.
Does full-page capture include content hidden behind a page’s own scroll container?
Not reliably. Content in an independently scrolling iframe or nested scroll area may need a separate capture of that element or document.
Is there a documented maximum height for Firefox screenshots?
Mozilla’s public documentation does not specify one universal pixel-height ceiling for every Firefox version. Treat extreme-height failures as a rendering or page-structure issue first and compare with a shorter test page.
Is an extension required?
No. The Screenshot panel, Developer Tools button and Web Console command are built into Firefox.
