If the body contains only one copy, look at the theme, site template, and plugins for a second image output. Remove or disable just one source, then check both the post and the archive or grid where you want the featured image to remain.
Why a featured image can appear twice
WordPress stores a featured image separately from images placed in the post content. A theme may display that featured image on the single-post page, in listings, or both; how it is used depends on the theme, as WordPress’s featured-image documentation explains. The post body, a site template, or a plugin can also render the same picture, creating an apparent duplicate.
The image is in both the post body and the featured-image field
An Image block in the post body is independent of the featured-image setting. If both refer to the same picture, the theme may display the featured image while the post content displays its own copy. A WordPress support example found this was resolved by removing the image from the content while keeping the featured image for listings: WordPress support discussion.
A theme and a plugin or page-builder template both output it
A theme may add the featured image to a single-post layout while an event plugin or page-builder template adds another copy. WordPress support discussions describe these overlapping outputs, but the controls vary by setup: WordPress support discussion.

A Featured Image block was added in addition to the theme output
A theme can display the featured image automatically, while a Post Featured Image block in the post body or template displays it again. The block can also be managed in a site template when the active theme supports the Site Editor. See WordPress’s Post Featured Image block documentation.
Find which layer is showing the extra copy
- Inspect the post body. Open the duplicated post in the editor and look for an Image block or Post Featured Image block showing the same picture. Check page-builder content as well as the standard block editor. If the image is in the body and should remain the featured image for listings, remove the body copy and preview the post.
- Check the single-post template. If the post body has no extra image, inspect the active theme’s single-post layout. If your theme supports the Site Editor, open the relevant template and look for a Post Featured Image block. WordPress’s block documentation describes this template use; themes without Site Editor support will have different controls.
- Check plugin and page-builder templates. Look for a setting or template that adds the featured image to the post page. Compare its output with the theme’s layout; if both render the same image, one needs to be disabled or changed.
- Change one thing at a time. Disable one duplicate output through the relevant theme or plugin setting, or edit the applicable template. There is no universal off switch or dashboard path established for every theme and plugin, so use the controls available in your own setup.
- Preview both destinations. Check the single post and an archive or grid where the thumbnail should appear. The goal is to remove the extra copy from the post without unintentionally removing the featured image from listings.
Choose the fix that matches the source
| Where the second image comes from | What to change | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Image block or page-builder content in the post | Remove the redundant image from the post body. | The featured-image field can remain in place for archive or grid use. |
| Theme single-post layout | Change the theme’s relevant single-post setting or template. | Featured-image behavior varies by theme. |
| Post Featured Image block in a Site Editor template | Edit the applicable template and remove or adjust the extra block. | This approach applies when the active theme supports the Site Editor. |
| Plugin or page-builder template | Change that template or its featured-image setting. | Check whether the theme also outputs the image. |
| Unclear or overlapping output | Identify the theme, plugins, and template controlling the post layout before making another change. | Make one change at a time so you can identify which layer caused the duplicate. |
Why CSS should be a last resort
CSS can hide an image, but a selector suggested for one theme or plugin is not a universal WordPress fix. It may hide the intended image, affect other pages, or stop matching after a theme change. Diagnose the source first and use a theme or plugin setting, or edit the relevant template, when possible. If you do use CSS, verify that it targets only the unwanted output and recheck the post and archive views.

If the duplicate is still there
If the post body, theme template, and plugin or page-builder template do not reveal the second output, note the active theme, relevant plugins, and whether a Site Editor template or page builder controls the post layout. Those details are needed to identify a specific control; the right setting depends on that combination.
