For Minecraft: Java Edition, “Failed to verify username,” “Invalid session,” and “Invalid token” usually mean the server could not authenticate your account. First close Minecraft and every launcher, then reopen the official Minecraft Launcher and sign in to the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition. Don’t switch an Aternos server to cracked mode just to bypass a temporary login or service problem; that setting disables normal account verification.
What the error means
An Aternos server in normal authenticated mode asks Minecraft’s authentication services to verify the account joining it. A stale login session, the wrong Microsoft account, a recent profile-name change, a shared account, an unauthenticated launcher, or a temporary service outage can prevent verification. The message alone does not mean the Aternos world or server hardware is broken. Aternos lists these errors and common causes.
Start by working out whether the problem affects one player or everyone. If it is one legitimate account, refresh that player’s session and check the account. If several players suddenly see it, consider an authentication-service outage before changing server settings.

Quick fix for a legitimate Java Edition account
- Exit the game and close Minecraft.
- Quit the Minecraft Launcher completely. Close any other Minecraft launcher that may be open, including third-party launchers.
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher and confirm it is signed into the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition.
- If the error persists, sign out of the launcher, close it, reopen it, and sign back in to the correct account.
- Launch the Java Edition version used by the server and try again. If needed, restart your computer and retry.
Aternos recommends closing Minecraft-related programs and reopening the game; Minecraft’s Java multiplayer troubleshooting also recommends restarting Minecraft and signing out and back in.

Check the account and license
Being signed in to Microsoft is not enough if it is the wrong Microsoft account. In the launcher, check that the selected account is the one that owns Java Edition—not a family member’s or friend’s account. On Windows, Minecraft says the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app may need to use the same licensed account. See Minecraft Launcher support and its license troubleshooting guidance.
If the launcher shows Demo Mode, that account cannot join multiplayer servers; use an account with a Java Edition license. Minecraft explains Demo Mode here. If you are trying to use an old Mojang account, note that the official migration period ended on December 18, 2023; consult Minecraft’s migration information rather than expecting to migrate it now.
If you recently changed your Minecraft username
Close Minecraft and the launcher, then sign out of the Microsoft account in the launcher and sign back in. Start the game and reconnect. If the error remains, restart the Aternos server and wait until it has fully started before trying again. Aternos specifically identifies a recent username change as a possible trigger for this error.

If several players get the error at once
A simultaneous failure across multiple authenticated players points more toward a temporary Minecraft authentication-service issue than a problem with one account. Wait and retry later; a client-side session reset cannot repair an outage. If possible, have one affected player test another authenticated multiplayer server and check official Minecraft service-status channels. Once service is available again, restart the launcher and, if needed, the Aternos server.
Do not enable cracked mode as an outage workaround. It does not restore authentication services, and it removes the normal check that a player owns the account name being used.
If you use a third-party launcher
A player who owns Minecraft but uses Prism, MultiMC, Technic, or another launcher should first test the server from the official Minecraft Launcher. If that works, the issue is likely tied to the third-party launcher’s account integration, cached credentials, or session handling. Close it, refresh its account sign-in if supported, and troubleshoot or update it separately. A paid account does not need a cracked server setting simply because a third-party launcher is involved.

If you do not own a legitimate Java Edition account, an authenticated server cannot verify that account. The legitimate solution is to use a licensed account with a supported sign-in flow. Aternos has a separate option for owners who deliberately want to accept unauthenticated clients, but it comes with security trade-offs.

When cracked mode is intentional
On Aternos, the cracked-player option is for a server owner who has decided to allow clients that cannot be authenticated. To change it, stop the server, open the server’s Options page, enable the current Cracked option (or the equivalent cracked-player setting shown in the interface), save, and start the server again. Wait until startup completes before reconnecting. Follow the current Aternos label because interface wording can change. See Aternos’ cracked-player setup guidance.
Security warning: In cracked/offline mode, the server does not verify that someone owns the Minecraft username they claim. Another person may impersonate a name, so names are not reliable proof of identity and player data may be confused or abused. Authentication plugins may add safeguards but are not an equivalent replacement for Mojang/Microsoft account verification. Use this setting only if the owner deliberately accepts the risk—not as a routine fix for a legitimate player’s invalid session.

If the basic fix does not work
Test a clean Java profile
Create a fresh Minecraft Java installation for the exact server version and test without mods, custom clients, or unusual JVM arguments. If vanilla works, add the mod loader, mods, and other customizations back gradually to identify whether the profile or launcher is involved. This is a later diagnostic step, not the first thing to try for an authentication message. Minecraft’s launcher guidance covers creating a new Java installation.
Check the connection only if account login works elsewhere
If the account can authenticate and join other servers but fails on the current computer or network, temporarily test without a VPN or proxy, check that firewall or antivirus software is not blocking the launcher or Java, and try another network such as a phone hotspot. Restart the router if other online services are failing too. These are secondary checks: they are less likely to help when the same account fails everywhere. Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance covers VPN, firewall, router, and network checks.
Consider account sharing
Aternos notes that verification errors can occur frequently when a Minecraft account is shared. Have each player use their own account rather than sharing a login, which can also create conflicting sessions.

Match the server setting to the player

| Bedrock Edition player | Check the Bedrock connection method and compatibility separately; this is primarily a Java Edition authentication error. |

Fixes that usually miss the cause
- Turning on cracked mode immediately: This may permit unauthenticated clients, but it does not repair a stale session, a wrong account, or an outage—and weakens identity verification.
- Assuming Aternos is broken: The error identifies an authentication failure, not a damaged world or server. The cause may be the player’s account, launcher, network, authentication service, or server mode.
- Reinstalling Minecraft first: Fully closing launchers and refreshing the account login are more direct first steps. Try a clean profile later; reinstall only if there is evidence of a damaged launcher or profile.
- Changing the username again: A new name is not a general fix. If a name change preceded the issue, refresh the launcher session instead.
When to contact Aternos
Contact Aternos if the server’s authentication setting is correct, the issue persists after account and launcher checks, and there is no apparent service outage. Include the full error text, server address, Minecraft version, whether one or several players are affected, and the steps already tried. Follow Aternos’ support-request guidance for any additional details or support token it asks for. Never send anyone your Microsoft password, session token, or launcher files.
