The red “Failed to Send” message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can come from a weak or filtered connection, an outdated or stuck app, low storage, a Snapchat outage, a changed friendship or contact relationship, or an account restriction. Start by checking whether the failure affects one recipient or every conversation, then work through the least disruptive fixes below.
Start with a two-question diagnosis
Does it fail for one person or everyone?
Send a short test message to another friend. If every Chat and Snap fails, prioritize your connection, Snapchat’s service, the app cache, storage, or an account-level problem. If only one conversation fails, investigate the friendship or contact relationship, the recipient’s account status, and the recipient’s app.
What failed?
Chat messages, photo or video Snaps, Stories, Spotlight uploads, Snapchat for Web, and the “Could not refresh messages” error can have different causes. A Snap working does not prove Chat is working, and a successful Chat does not prove media uploads are healthy. Snapchat’s separate guidance covers Chat problems, Snaps that will not send or load, and message-refresh failures.

Do not keep tapping Send while testing. A network or server delay can make a message appear failed and then deliver later, creating duplicates.

Fixes that solve most sending failures
1. Change networks
- Confirm that another app can load a webpage or send a message.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi and retry on cellular data.
- Turn off cellular data and retry on a trusted Wi‑Fi network.
- On public Wi‑Fi, complete the browser sign-in page or use another network.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or other network filter.
- Retry with a short text before sending a large video.
Wi‑Fi or cellular bars only show that the phone sees a network; they do not prove Snapchat can reach its servers. Snapchat specifically recommends switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data or moving to a location with better service (Snapchat support).
2. Update Snapchat on both devices
Install the latest Snapchat release from the iOS App Store, Google Play, or Amazon Appstore where applicable. Ask the recipient to update too. Snapchat’s guidance for failed Snaps says both people should use the latest version; do not rely on an old version number because the current release changes.
3. Fully close and reopen the app
- Leave the conversation.
- Open the phone’s app switcher or recent-apps view and dismiss Snapchat completely.
- Reopen Snapchat, return to the conversation, and try once.
Simply switching to another app is not the same as force-closing Snapchat.

4. Restart the phone
After closing Snapchat, restart the device. For Snaps, Snapchat’s support instructions specifically say to turn the device completely off for one full minute before turning it on again (Snap troubleshooting).
5. Clear Snapchat’s in-app cache
Snapchat says clearing its cache can help and does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats (cache instructions).
Current iOS path
- Open Snapchat and tap your Profile icon.
- Tap the gear icon.
- Open App & Privacy, then My Privacy & Data.
- Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache.
- Tap Clear to confirm.
Current Android path
- Open Profile, then tap the gear icon.
- Go to App & Privacy → My Privacy & Data.
- Tap Clear Data → Clear Cache, then confirm.
Menu wording can differ by operating system, language, and staged app version. Look for Clear Cache in Snapchat’s privacy or data settings. Do not substitute the phone’s generic Clear Storage or Clear App Data; that broader action can sign you out and remove local app data.

6. Check free device storage
A nearly full phone can interfere with capturing, processing, caching, and uploading media. This explains cases where text sends but a long video fails. Check iOS or Android storage, back up important media, then remove or move large files and retry. Snapchat recommends freeing storage as part of Chat troubleshooting.

If only one person is affected
Test another friend before assuming you were blocked. A failed label alone is not proof of blocking.
- The person may no longer be an accepted friend or may have changed contact settings.
- The account may be deleted or temporarily unavailable. Snapchat notes that a deleted account can remain visible until the app is refreshed by logging out and back in (friend-adding troubleshooting).
- The person may have blocked contact, but Snapchat does not publish a universal “Failed to Send” code that confirms this.
- The recipient may be using an outdated app or have a connection problem.
Snapchat’s current contact choices are Friends and Friends and Contacts; “Everyone” is generally limited to Creator and business accounts (contact settings). Messages to non-friends have additional restrictions, and Snapchat says users must be at least 18 to send or receive messages from non-friends (non-friend messaging). If you can reach the person elsewhere, ask them to update Snapchat and review their contact settings.

If Snapchat itself may be down
When Chats, Snaps, Stories, and message loading fail together, suspect a service or server-connection problem rather than one conversation. Try another conversation, switch networks, and check Snapchat’s official status information or support notices. Snapchat says “Could not refresh messages” can occur when the app cannot connect to its servers (server-connection guidance).
Widespread reports elsewhere are only a secondary signal. Do not repeatedly resend while an outage is possible; wait, reopen the conversation, and check whether the original eventually appeared. Snapchat does not promise a restoration time.

When an account warning changes the diagnosis
An ordinary failed message does not establish that your account is locked. Escalate this possibility only if Snapchat also shows a login warning, suspicious-activity notice, lock message, device-ban notice, or broad access failure.

Snapchat lists Community Guidelines or Terms violations, suspicious activity, suspected compromise, login from a banned device, and unauthorized third-party apps, tweaks, or plugins among lock causes (account-lock guidance). Temporary locks may offer an in-app or Accounts Portal unlock route. Eligible permanent-lock appeals are handled in the in-app appeal flow, and not every lock is appealable (permanent-lock information).
Remove modified clients, automation tools, “unlockers,” and plugins. They can expose your account and are specifically identified by Snapchat as possible contributors to account locks. Use only Snapchat’s official support and account portals.
Escalate without risking your account
Reinstall only as a later step
Reinstallation is not a first-line fix for connection or cache problems. Before uninstalling, confirm that you know your login details and that important Memories are backed up. Reinstalling can sign you out and will not resolve a server outage or account lock.
Report the bug in Snapchat
- Open Snapchat and tap the Profile icon.
- Tap the gear icon.
- Under App & Privacy, tap Support & Safety.
- Tap Bugs and Suggestions → Report a Bug.
- Follow the prompts. If enabled, you can also use Shake to Report; Snapchat may attach a screenshot.
Include the exact error text, whether Chats, Snaps, or both fail, whether one recipient or everyone is affected, your iOS or Android version, phone model, Snapchat app version, when the issue began, and whether Wi‑Fi and cellular data were tested. Remove private information from screenshots. Snapchat notes that it may not respond to every report (bug-report instructions).
