“Failed to fetch” is a generic request error, not a diagnosis: Janitor AI, your browser or network, or a connected AI provider could be responsible. Before refreshing or changing settings, copy any unsent message. Then compare a private window, another device, and another network; if you use a custom API, check its endpoint, key, and model before changing anything else.
Protect your draft, then identify where the failure occurs
Copy unsent text somewhere safe before refreshing, signing out, or clearing site data. Avoid pressing Send repeatedly: retries can create duplicates or worsen a rate limit.
The browser’s “Failed to fetch” message usually means it did not receive a usable response to a network request. It does not, by itself, prove that your internet is down, your API key is wrong, or your chat violated a policy. DNS or routing trouble, HTTPS/TLS problems, blocked requests, CORS, stale session data, an invalid endpoint, provider limits, or a Janitor AI-side failure can all lead to similar symptoms.

The exact cause still depends on the request and its environment. Run a quick isolation test
- Open Janitor AI in a private or incognito window and sign in. If it works there, the normal browser profile is the leading suspect.
- Try a second browser or device. If only one device fails, focus on its browser, app, or network settings.
- Switch networks—for example, Wi-Fi to cellular data. If the second network works, investigate the original network’s DNS, router, firewall, filtering, or ISP route.
- If the site loads but messages fail, test a short message in a new chat or with another character. If only one conversation or character fails, the problem may be specific to that chat, model, or request rather than a site-wide outage.
- Check current official Janitor AI announcements or support channels and, separately, your AI provider’s status information. Community reports can provide clues, but they do not confirm an outage.

Historical community reports describe Janitor AI incidents involving unstable loading and failed requests, but older reports cannot establish whether a current problem is platform-wide. For example, users discussed a possible service incident; treat such reports as observations, not official confirmation.
Fix browser, session, or stale-page problems
Hard-refresh and sign in again
On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl + Shift + R; on macOS, press Cmd + Shift + R. Close duplicate Janitor AI tabs first. If that does not help, sign out and back in, then retry once with a short test message. A community troubleshooting post also recommends closing tabs, logging out, clearing cache, and restarting the app or device; these steps are low-risk compared with changing API settings (community troubleshooting post).
Test extensions without disabling protection permanently
Temporarily turn off ad blockers, tracker or script blockers, VPN browser extensions, anti-fingerprinting tools, or antivirus browser protection, then reload. If the error disappears, re-enable tools one at a time to find the conflict. Only add a site exception if you trust the site and understand what the exception permits; do not leave security tools disabled as a general fix.

Clear only Janitor AI site data
If private browsing works but your usual profile does not, use the browser’s site-information or privacy settings to remove data for the Janitor AI site rather than wiping every site’s saved data. This may sign you out or remove locally stored preferences. Copy drafts first, close all Janitor AI tabs, reopen the browser, visit the site, sign in, and test once.
Unregister a service worker only for persistent stale-page symptoms
If the page repeatedly reloads, remains stuck, or seems to serve stale frontend files, a Chromium-based desktop browser lets you inspect the site’s service worker. Open Janitor AI, right-click and select Inspect, then open Application → Service Workers and choose Unregister for that site. Reload, preferably with a hard refresh. DevTools labels vary by browser and version. This is an advanced step, not a routine cure for every failed request; community reports include it among remedies for persistent loading problems (community troubleshooting post).
Check Wi-Fi, VPN, DNS, and network filtering
Compare the same account on Wi-Fi and cellular data, or on a personal network instead of a work or school network. Test with a VPN off and, if you need one, with a different VPN server. A VPN can cause a routing problem or change a route that was failing, so neither result makes it a guaranteed fix.

- If only a filtered, work, or school network fails, a firewall, content filter, or network policy may be blocking the request.
- If the error includes a DNS resolution failure, confirm the hostname and compare another network or DNS resolver. Changing DNS can help with name resolution, but it will not repair a dead provider, invalid key, unavailable model, or server-side failure.
- If an antivirus product performs HTTPS inspection, test briefly with that feature disabled only if you can do so safely, then restore protection and investigate the specific rule.
Verify a custom API, provider, or proxy
If the site opens but message requests fail while using a custom API, check the configuration before replacing a working setup. Provider model names, endpoints, account permissions, and proxy availability can change; an old tutorial is not proof that a value is still valid.
Check the API key and account
- Confirm the complete key was entered in the key field without extra spaces and belongs to the selected provider.
- Check whether it was revoked or expired, whether the account has remaining balance or quota, and whether the key can use the chosen model.
- Do not share the key in a public post or support screenshot. Redact it before sharing anything.
Regenerating a key is appropriate only when evidence points to a missing, invalid, expired, revoked, or restricted key; it is not a universal failed-fetch fix. Community setup reports discuss checking API keys and model selections, but configuration details may be provider- and date-specific (community setup discussion).
Check the endpoint and model identifier
- Use the provider’s documented HTTPS endpoint and required path. Check for a truncated, duplicated, malformed, or mistyped URL.
- Confirm that the provider supports the API format Janitor AI expects; a provider’s own working interface does not guarantee that a particular browser integration or proxy route works.
- Use the provider’s current model ID exactly, and confirm it is available to your account, region, endpoint, and plan. An outdated or unavailable model can produce a not-found or no-endpoints response.
- Do not copy an API or proxy URL from an unverified social post. An unofficial proxy can disappear, mishandle data, impose costs, or expose credentials. Community reports describe malformed or unreachable proxy URLs and model-availability errors (proxy discussion; model setup discussion).
Check the provider’s own incident information, usage limits, and model availability before topping up, changing keys, or switching endpoints. If the provider works directly but the browser integration fails with a CORS message, that points to a cross-origin configuration problem rather than a reason to disable browser security. Community users have reported CORS and integration-side failures, but those reports do not establish the cause of a particular incident (community report).

Find the underlying error in DevTools
On desktop Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, open the chat, press F12 or right-click and choose Inspect, then select Network. Send one short test message and inspect the failed request for its domain, status, and response text. Check Console for CORS, DNS, TLS, or blocked-request messages. Do not share authorization headers, full request bodies, API keys, or message text: these can expose credentials and private conversation content.

Status codes are clues, not guarantees: providers can use different responses for similar conditions. If a short message works but a long draft fails, copy it, try a shorter version or a fresh chat, and compare another model. That is an isolation test, not proof that length caused the problem.

Troubleshoot the mobile app separately
- Force-close the app, reopen it, and retry once.
- Install an available update from the official app store.
- Compare Wi-Fi and cellular data, and temporarily test without a device VPN or DNS-filtering profile.
- Sign out and back in if you can safely do so.
- On Android, clear the app cache before considering storage. Clearing storage can remove local data or settings.
- On iOS, do not reinstall until you have considered whether important unsynced data is stored locally.
- Open the regular website in a browser. If it works there, the issue may be app-specific; if both fail, continue with network, provider, and incident checks.
Some users have reported that the website worked when the app did not, but that is an anecdotal comparison rather than proof that both use identical backend paths (community app-versus-browser report).

When waiting is the sensible next step
Wait rather than repeatedly changing settings when the same failure occurs across devices and networks, a provider status page reports an incident, or the request returns a server or gateway error such as 500, 502, 503, or 504. Look for current official updates where available; community posts and third-party monitoring can lag or report unconfirmed symptoms. A third-party outage discussion notes that monitoring pages may not immediately reflect incidents (Roborhythms’ outage discussion; StatusGator listing).
- Keep a copy of unsent text and avoid repeated sends.
- Wait 10–30 minutes, check for an update, then try one short message.
- During a confirmed incident, do not regenerate keys or replace settings that were working.
Report a failure without exposing private data
If the problem persists, send support enough detail to distinguish a browser, network, provider, and platform failure. Use the official support route linked from the site or app you trust; similarly named domains are not interchangeable, so verify the address before signing in or sharing account information.
