FAILED (Status read failed (No such device)) usually means your computer lost communication with the phone while fastboot was waiting for a response. It does not, by itself, mean the phone is bricked. First check whether it is still detected with fastboot devices; do not repeat a destructive flash or erase command until you know why the connection failed.
First: check whether the phone is still detected
Leave the phone in its current state and run:
fastboot devicesOn Windows, use PowerShell or Command Prompt; on macOS or Linux, use Terminal. Interpret the result before trying another flash:
- A serial number appears and stays visible: the USB link is currently working. If only one operation failed, check the command, image, partition, slot, and required fastboot mode.
- No serial number appears: the computer cannot currently communicate with the phone in fastboot mode. Check the phone’s mode, cable, port, driver, or Linux permissions.
- The serial appears and disappears, or vanishes during a transfer: suspect an unstable USB link, a reboot or mode change, or device-specific behavior. Repeating the same flash is not a diagnosis.
For more detail, try fastboot devices -l. A phone missing from this list before a command is different from one that was detected and then lost: the latter has failed during communication or a state change.
If the phone has returned to Android or recovery, check whether ADB sees it:

adb devicesIf Android is running, ADB is authorized, and you need bootloader mode, you can use adb reboot bootloader. This will not work if Android cannot run ADB or the computer is not authorized.
What the error means—and what it does not
Fastboot talks to a device in a bootloader-related USB mode. This message indicates that a read for a response failed because the host no longer had a usable device connection. AOSP’s device-recovery code treats this status as a bad fastboot response, but the text alone does not identify the underlying cause. AOSP Trade Federation source
The phone may have disconnected physically, reset its USB connection, rebooted, or changed from bootloader fastboot to another mode. A driver or permissions issue can also prevent the host from seeing the interface. Alternatively, the connection may be fine now while a particular command or image is wrong for that device.

That is encouraging, but it does not prove every partition is intact. A failed write may have left its target incomplete, so do not unplug the phone during an operation that is still running. If the command has clearly failed or the phone has already disconnected, stop and inspect its current state before proceeding. The error alone is not enough to call a device either bricked or safe.
Pause before retrying a flash
- Do not repeat the same flash command over and over or erase extra partitions to “make it work.”
- Do not lock or relock the bootloader as a troubleshooting step.
- Do not use an image for a different model, region, storage variant, or Android generation. Verify its checksum if the device maintainer provides one.
- Record the exact command and complete terminal output, including whether the error followed a line such as
Sending ... OKAY. - If Android still boots, back up important data before further modifications.
Bootloader unlocking commonly erases user data. Commands such as flash, erase, and format can cause data loss or prevent a device from booting. fastboot flashing unlock is not a harmless connection test.
Establish a clean baseline
Check which tools you are running and whether the phone is visible in either mode:

fastboot devicesThen disconnect the phone, close Android Studio, OEM flash utilities, and other tools that might be communicating with it. Reconnect it directly to the computer, deliberately enter bootloader mode using the device’s instructions, and run fastboot devices again. Note whether the serial appears and remains stable for several seconds.

Download the current Platform-Tools release. Multiple copies can cause confusion: updating one copy does not help if your terminal invokes another through PATH. Find the one being used:

where.exe fastbootAvoid casually mixing a distribution package, Android Studio copy, OEM flasher, or third-party “minimal” bundle. Confirm the reported version and the executable path before changing anything. Updating is a sensible baseline, not a guaranteed fix.
Fix an unstable USB connection
Try the simplest physical changes first:
- Use a known-good, data-capable cable. A cable that charges or supports file transfer is not necessarily reliable during a sustained fastboot operation.
- Connect directly to a computer port, without a hub, dock, monitor port, KVM switch, extension, or adapter if possible.
- Try another physical port. If available, test a USB 2.0 connection; this is a practical workaround that helps in some setups, not an Android requirement.
- Keep the phone still. A loose handset port or connector that shifts with movement can interrupt communication.
- If possible, try a second computer. This helps separate a host setup problem from a phone-side port or bootloader problem.
Android’s device troubleshooting guidance recommends testing another cable and another Android device to help isolate a connection issue. Android device connection troubleshooting. USB-C-to-A, USB 2.0, and other cable or port substitutions are not universal fixes; behavior depends on the device and host.
Check the platform-specific connection setup
Windows: check the bootloader driver
ADB and fastboot can present different USB identities, so a driver that works while Android is running does not prove the bootloader interface is installed correctly.

- Look under Android Device, Other devices, Universal Serial Bus devices, and any entry with a warning icon.
- Install the correct driver for the phone manufacturer, then reconnect in bootloader mode and check that Windows recognizes its fastboot or bootloader interface.
Google devices use Google’s USB Driver on Windows; other manufacturers supply their own drivers. Use the manufacturer’s source rather than a generic driver-pack download site. Google USB Driver instructions and OEM USB driver links.

Linux: check USB permissions and device events
On Ubuntu and similar systems, check your group membership:
idGoogle’s setup guidance identifies membership in plugdev and the appropriate udev rules as part of device access on Ubuntu. If needed, add your login user to the group, then log out and back in:
sudo usermod -aG plugdev $LOGNAMEOn Ubuntu/Debian-based systems, the commonly used Android rules package can be installed with:
sudo apt update

To see whether Linux detects a USB connection at all, use:
lsusb
dmesg --followStart dmesg --follow and reconnect the phone. Repeated disconnects, resets, enumeration failures, or a new vendor/product ID when the phone changes mode can help distinguish a transport or mode issue from permissions. If lsusb sees the device but fastboot devices does not, investigate the fastboot interface and access rules. Avoid making broad, world-writable USB permission rules: they weaken system security.

macOS: test the tool path and direct connection
macOS generally does not require a separate Android USB driver. Check the executable and version, then test a direct connection:

fastboot devicesTry another cable or Mac port, avoid a dock, and replace old third-party ADB/fastboot copies with the current Platform-Tools package. When the serial remains visible, try non-destructive queries first:
fastboot getvar product
fastboot getvar current-slot
fastboot getvar max-download-sizeNot every bootloader implements every query, and some fastboot versions print results to standard error. A missing or oddly formatted result is not by itself proof of a USB failure.

Sending ... OKAYand then fails: this indicates that one transfer stage returned OKAY; it does not prove the partition write completed. The phone may have reset or switched modes, the link may have failed, or the operation may have encountered a device-specific problem. fastboot flashing unlockorunlock_criticalfails: do not repeat it as a test. Confirm the exact model’s unlock eligibility, prerequisites, and instructions; unlocking can erase data.
Keep the operation subordinate to the official device instructions or the maintainer’s guide for the exact model. A generic command list cannot establish a device’s partition layout or unlock policy.
Check whether the phone changed fastboot modes
Modern devices may support both bootloader fastboot, implemented by the bootloader, and fastbootd, a userspace fastboot environment. Devices with dynamic partitions may require userspace fastboot for some operations. A transition between modes can make the phone disappear briefly or enumerate as a different USB device. Where the device supports the command, fastboot reboot fastboot can request userspace fastboot; fastboot reboot bootloader requests a return to bootloader mode. fastboot reboot recovery may also be supported. These commands are not interchangeable or universal: use the device-specific guide to choose the required mode. If the phone returns to Android or recovery instead, the host may see it through ADB rather than fastboot.
Android’s general documentation describes fastboot as a tool for interacting with the bootloader and flashing images; the command and mode required depend on the device and operation. AOSP: Running and testing builds
Recovery images, partitions, and slots
Do not assume that every Android phone has a traditional standalone recovery partition. On many A/B or dynamic-partition devices, recovery may be integrated into boot, vendor_boot, or another device-specific layout. Blindly running fastboot flash recovery twrp.img can target a partition that does not exist or is not meant for that image.
Some supported devices and recovery images can be tested with fastboot boot twrp.img, which boots an image temporarily rather than permanently writing a partition. That is only appropriate when the image developer and device maintainer explicitly support it; it is not a universal substitute for flashing. Likewise, do not switch A/B slots at random. You can query fastboot getvar current-slot if supported, but changing the active slot without knowing which images are installed can make the phone unbootable. Only use slot commands as part of a device-specific recovery plan.

Stop issuing flash commands and consult the phone manufacturer, device maintainer, or a qualified repair service if:
- The exact image, target partition, slot, or required fastboot mode is uncertain.
- The phone repeatedly disappears during the same operation despite a direct connection, known-good cable, and current tools.
- Multiple computers cannot detect it, or the USB port appears physically loose or damaged.
- The phone shows no display or response and cannot enter a known bootloader, recovery, or charging state.
- The device is carrier-locked or region-specific and its bootloader may not support the requested operation.
If no computer detects a USB device at all, software commands cannot repair a physical connection or an unresponsive bootloader. Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific recovery or service procedure rather than guessing at more partitions. For supported Google devices and prebuilt builds, Android Flash Tool is an alternative to manually entering commands, not a cure for an unstable cable, driver, permission setup, or phone port.
