If Facebook or Instagram links no longer embed in WordPress, the usual cause is the end of WordPress’s old unauthenticated integration—not a broken post. The simplest current fix for a single public post is the official Meta Embeds plugin, which says it needs no app, API key, or access token. It supports specified public Facebook and Instagram content, but not Instagram Stories.

Why Facebook and Instagram embeds stopped working

WordPress’s former built-in Facebook and Instagram embedding relied on Meta oEmbed endpoints that Meta closed to unauthenticated use. WordPress documented the change in 2020: “Due to Facebook’s decision to close the oEmbed end point for embedding Instagram links, the block will not work anymore after October 24, 2020.” Afterward, the general WordPress Embeds documentation said a developer account, app ID, and authentication token were required for the authenticated route. See WordPress Embeds documentation.

That is why an Instagram URL can produce “Sorry, this content could not be embedded.” WordPress’s Instagram guidance describes the native workflow as applying to public posts, while Facebook’s guidance says the post must be public and excludes pages, events, and groups from that block. See WordPress Instagram embed documentation and WordPress Facebook embed documentation.

Fix a single public post with Meta Embeds

The official Meta Embeds plugin is the lowest-setup option for embedding supported public URLs. Its WordPress.org listing says it uses Meta’s tokenless oEmbed APIs and does not require creating an app or supplying an access token or API key. It registers endpoints for Instagram, Facebook posts, and Facebook videos. The listing states WordPress 5.9+ and PHP 7.4+; check the current compatibility details on the Meta Embeds plugin listing before installing.

  1. Back up your site, and confirm the post or profile you want to embed is public.
  2. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, search for Meta Embeds, then install and activate it.
  3. In the Block Editor or Classic Editor, paste the supported Facebook or Instagram URL on its own line. You can also insert the plugin’s dedicated block if available in your editor.
  4. Update the post, then open the published page to verify the embed. An editor preview alone may not show the final result.

Which URLs and content types can embed?

The plugin listing describes support for public Instagram image and carousel posts, reels, and profiles, along with public Facebook posts and reels. It explicitly says Instagram Stories are not supported. Private or otherwise inaccessible content cannot be treated as a supported public embed. Consult the plugin’s supported-content details if a URL type behaves differently.

Embedding also involves external services: Meta Embeds says it makes server-side requests to Meta graph endpoints and loads Meta embed scripts in the visitor’s browser. The resulting display is subject to Meta’s privacy policy and platform terms, so consider that behavior when deciding whether to embed content on a page.

Troubleshoot embeds that still fail

  • Check visibility and format: verify that the source is public and is one of the supported post, reel, or profile types.
  • Use a clean URL: paste the canonical URL alone on its own line. If the provider rejects a link containing tracking parameters, remove those parameters and retry.
  • Check the live page: publish or update the post and test it in a browser, not just in the editor.
  • Clear caches: purge page, object, and CDN caches after installing or changing the plugin.
  • Isolate conflicts safely: on a staging copy, temporarily disable optimization, consent, security, or HTML-filtering plugins, then re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict.
  • Check server and browser errors: if the official plugin is active, inspect requests to Meta’s endpoint, PHP errors, REST or outbound-request restrictions, and JavaScript console errors.

When to choose a feed plugin instead

A single-post embed and a managed Instagram feed are different needs. If you want connected accounts, multiple-account feeds, galleries, or styling controls, Smash Balloon Social Photo Feed is designed for that broader job. Its listing says version 2.5 added support for powering Instagram oEmbeds because official WordPress core support is no longer available. The WordPress.org listing shows 1+ million active installations, a directory figure rather than a guarantee of suitability or compatibility: Smash Balloon Social Photo Feed.

Another directory option, oEmbed Plus, describes support for Facebook and Instagram posts in both the Block Editor and Classic Editor. Before choosing any third-party plugin, check its current maintenance, permissions, and compatibility information: oEmbed Plus.

Developer fallback: respect WordPress’s embed security

WordPress limits which providers can be embedded through a core whitelist. Developers can register an oEmbed provider with wp_oembed_add_provider() or a custom non-oEmbed handler with wp_embed_register_handler(). WordPress’s oEmbed handbook also explains that discovered HTML and video content is filtered and sandboxed. Those protections are a security boundary; bypassing them casually can expose a site to unsafe markup or scripts. See the WordPress oEmbed handbook.

Do not put access tokens in page source or theme code. For custom API integrations, keep secrets server-side and follow Meta’s and WordPress’s security guidance.
