SU-42481-9 means the PS4 system-software update failed. Start with the non-destructive fixes: restart the console, connect it to your router by Ethernet, delete the failed download from Notifications, and retry. If the PS4 cannot complete an online update, use Safe Mode and Sony’s standard USB update file. Reserve Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) for last, because that option erases data stored on the console.
Sony’s official guidance is available on the SU-42481-9 support page.
What SU-42481-9 means
Sony defines error code SU-42481-9 as a failed PS4 system-software update. The code does not, by itself, prove that the hard drive, Blu-ray drive, motherboard, or network service is defective. It can appear after a failed download, during an update loop, or when the console falls back to Safe Mode.

Deleting an incomplete update download is not the same as deleting games or saved data; a full system-software reinstallation is the step that erases local content.

Fixes that normally preserve your data
1. Restart and switch to Ethernet
- Turn the PS4 fully off, then start it again.
- If possible, connect the PS4 directly to the router with a LAN/Ethernet cable. This removes Wi-Fi signal and interference as variables; it cannot repair a damaged update file or failing hardware.
- Retry the update once the console has restarted.
Wi-Fi remains acceptable when Ethernet is unavailable, but Sony specifically recommends a wired connection where possible.
2. Delete the failed download
If the console reaches the home screen:
- Open Notifications from the PS4 function area.
- Highlight the failed system-software update.
- Press the controller’s OPTIONS button and choose Delete.
- Open Settings > System Software Update and try again.
These are Sony’s menu paths for removing the incomplete download and starting a fresh attempt: PS4 system-software instructions.
3. Check service status before repeated online attempts
If the failure began suddenly and other PlayStation devices or accounts are also affected, check Sony’s live PlayStation service status. It is a current-status page, not a permanent diagnosis of SU-42481-9.

Update from Safe Mode
Use Safe Mode when the PS4 cannot reach the home screen or normal updating continues to fail.
- Turn the console completely off.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep.
- Connect a DUALSHOCK 4 controller with a USB cable that supports data communication, then press the controller’s PS button. A charge-only cable may not work.
- Select Update System Software.
- Try the internet update first. If it fails again, use the standard USB procedure below.
Safe Mode instructions are documented by Sony at Update PlayStation system software using Safe Mode.
Update PS4 system software from a USB drive
Use this route when downloads fail repeatedly or the console cannot obtain the update reliably. Download only from Sony’s official PS4 system-software page.

- On a PC or Mac, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- In the USB drive’s root, create a folder named
PS4. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Download Sony’s clearly labeled standard update file.
- Place it in the
UPDATEfolder with this exact name:PS4UPDATE.PUP. - Insert the drive into the PS4 and start Safe Mode (hold the power button until the second beep).
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
The required layout is:
USB root/
└── PS4/
└── UPDATE/
└── PS4UPDATE.PUP
Do not turn off the console during installation. Sony also advises against starting an update immediately before or after a power outage.
If the PS4 cannot find the USB update file
Check each item before downloading again:
- The drive uses FAT32 or exFAT.
PS4andUPDATEare folders, not files, and are nested exactly as shown.- The file is inside
UPDATE, not in the USB root. - The filename is exactly
PS4UPDATE.PUP, in uppercase. Remove accidental endings such as.PUP.pup,.PUP.zip, or.PUP.txt. - You downloaded the standard update file from Sony, rather than the separate reinstallation file.
- The controller is connected to the PS4 by a USB data cable while Safe Mode is running.
- As practical troubleshooting, try another USB port or another compatible drive if the structure and file are correct.
Standard update file versus reinstallation file
Sony supplies two different downloads, and both use the filename PS4UPDATE.PUP:
| Download | Use it for | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Standard update file | Normal updating or Safe Mode’s Update System Software | Intended to update the existing installation without the factory-reset process |
| Reinstallation file | Safe Mode’s Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes data stored on the PS4 |
Select the download associated with the procedure you are performing. Do not substitute the reinstallation file merely because a normal update failed.

Last resort: reinstall PS4 system software
Warning: Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) erases local games, saves, screenshots, settings, and other data stored on the console. It is not an ordinary update. If the PS4 still reaches the home screen, back up important data first; a backup may be impossible when the console is trapped before startup, and cloud-save access depends on your account and service setup.
Consider reinstallation only after restarting, deleting the failed download, trying Ethernet, using Safe Mode updating, and trying the standard USB update. Sony’s procedure is:

- Select Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) and follow the prompts.

When every update method fails
Stop repeating identical downloads once the official online, Safe Mode, and standard USB paths have failed. Possible contributors include an unstable network, damaged update media, incorrect USB structure, an incompatible or damaged drive, a failing internal hard drive, or another storage fault; SU-42481-9 alone does not identify which one.
- If the console remains usable, preserve any data you can before further destructive steps.
- Verify the live service status page if the failure appears widespread.
- If reinstallation also fails, contact PlayStation Support or use Sony’s regional repair diagnostic path. Availability, warranty coverage, and repair terms vary by country, model, and date.
A persistent failure accompanied by freezes, corruption, Safe Mode loops, or storage-related messages makes hardware service more plausible, but replacing the hard drive should follow Sony’s support diagnosis rather than the error code alone.
Quick decision guide
| What you can access | Next action | Data risk |
|---|---|---|
| Home screen | Ethernet, delete the failed notification, retry in Settings | None from these steps |
| Safe Mode | Connect controller by USB; choose Update System Software | None from the standard update option |
| USB file not detected | Check FAT32/exFAT, exact folders, uppercase filename, official file, cable, port, and drive | None |
| Update loop after all non-destructive attempts | Back up if possible, then consider the reinstallation file | Reinstallation erases local data |
| Reinstallation fails | Contact Sony Support or repair | Do not keep trying random firmware files |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SU-42481-9 prove that my PS4 is broken?
No. Sony defines it as a failed system-software update. Hardware or storage trouble is only one possible explanation after the official update and reinstallation procedures fail.
Will deleting the failed update delete my games or saves?
No. Deleting the incomplete item from Notifications removes that download; it is separate from initializing the PS4.
Can a USB update work without internet on the PS4?
Yes. The computer needs internet to download Sony’s file, but the PS4 can install the standard file from USB through Safe Mode.
Should I replace the hard drive immediately?
No. The code does not diagnose a failed drive. Try Sony’s documented update paths first, then seek support if installation still cannot complete.
