CE-41807-0 is best treated as a game-data or storage-access problem, not proof of a failed hard drive. Sony does not currently publish a clearly verifiable dedicated explanation for this code. Start with a full restart, check storage, and determine whether one game or several are affected. If the game is on USB extended storage, test it from internal storage before considering destructive resets.

Start with the symptom

Note the game and edition, your console model, whether the title is physical or digital, its storage location, and when the code appears.

What happens Most useful next step What it may indicate
One digital game fails Update, then delete and redownload that game Damaged or incomplete installation
One disc game fails Inspect the disc, reinstall the game, and test another disc Disc, installation, or title-specific problem
Several games on one USB drive fail Shut down, disconnect the drive, and test internal storage External drive, cable, port, or storage-index issue
Several games on internal storage fail Back up saves and contact PlayStation Repairs Possible internal-storage or system problem
Error occurs during download or update Check free space, network stability, and retry Network, account, or installation issue

These symptoms are more useful than assigning a definitive meaning to the code. Sony’s public error-code pages do not provide a dedicated, verifiable CE-41807-0 definition: PlayStation error-code support.

Try the non-destructive fixes first

  1. Fully restart the console. Close the game, choose the normal power-off command, wait until the power indicator is completely off, wait briefly, and turn the console on again. Do not unplug a running console or one displaying a storage-repair screen.
  2. Check free space. On either platform open Settings > Storage and inspect the location containing the game. Delete unnecessary games or media if the drive is nearly full; updates can require temporary space in addition to the installed size.
  3. Update the game. Highlight it on the Home screen or in the Library, press Options, choose Check for Update when shown, install the update, and retry.
  4. Update system software. Install any pending PS4 or PS5 system update before repeating the test.

Test USB extended storage

Community reports describe CE-41807-0 when games are on an external drive and sometimes report success after reinstalling internally. That is anecdotal evidence, not an official Sony diagnosis.

Avolusion T1 Series 1TB USB 3.0 Portable External Gaming Hard Drive - White (for PS4 / PS5 Pre-Formatted) - 2 Year Warranty (Renewed)
  • Built-in 1TB Capacity USB 3.0 External Gaming Hard Drive
  • Stylish Design, Expand your game console storage instantly!
  • Easy Installation without open Game Console case
  • Works for PS4 Pro, Slim, Original (Gen1) & PS5
  1. Shut the console down normally.
  2. Disconnect the USB extended-storage drive only after the console is fully off.
  3. Start the console without the drive attached.
  4. If an internal copy exists, test it. Otherwise reinstall the affected title to internal storage and test it before reconnecting the drive.
  5. If needed, try another compatible USB port or cable. A cable change does not repair already-corrupted data.

On PS5, USB extended storage can store and play PS4 games, but PS5 games must run from the console’s internal SSD or a compatible internal M.2 SSD. Sony also says not to connect extended storage through a USB hub or connect two extended-storage drives simultaneously: Sony’s PS5 FAQ. Formatting an extended-storage drive erases the games and other data stored on it.

For the external-storage reports, see the community discussion; treat it as troubleshooting evidence rather than confirmation of the code’s cause.

Reinstall the game without deleting saves

Game/application files and saved data are separate. Back up saves first if possible using PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB backup. Then delete only the application, not the saved-data category.

PS5

  1. Open Settings > Storage.
  2. Select the storage location containing the title, then Games and Apps.
  3. Select the game and choose Delete.
  4. Reinstall from the Game Library, PlayStation Store, or the disc.

You can also highlight the game on the Home screen, press Options, and choose Delete. Publisher guidance confirms that this removes the game installation rather than requiring deletion of saves: Bandai Namco’s PS5 instructions.

PS4

  1. Open Settings > Storage > System Storage > Applications.
  2. Highlight the affected game, press Options, and delete it.
  3. Reinstall from the disc or your Library.

Do not enter saved-data management unless you specifically intend to manage saves. See the PS4 troubleshooting instructions for the same separation.

Use Safe Mode when storage or indexing is suspect

Sony’s current Safe Mode procedure is the same on PS4 and PS5:

  1. Turn the console off by holding the power button for three seconds.
  2. After it is off, press and hold the power button again.
  3. Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
  4. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

Option names and consequences are documented by Sony’s Safe Mode guide.

PS5 order

  1. Repair Console Storage for an apparent storage problem. Sony identifies this as non-erasing.
  2. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache for system-feature or performance symptoms.
  3. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database for an inconsistent content index.
  4. Update System Software if the console is not current or an update may be damaged.

Rebuilding creates a new index of stored content. It can correct missing icons or indexing problems, but it does not replace missing game files or repair a physically failing drive. Do not turn the console off during the operation.

PS4 order

  1. Choose Rebuild Database.
  2. Choose Update System Software if needed.
  3. Retest the game.

When the error occurs during downloading or updating

  • Restart the router or modem and retry.
  • Use a wired LAN connection if Wi-Fi is unstable.
  • Confirm enough free space exists for installed data and temporary update files.
  • For a disc title, clean and inspect the disc and test another disc if available.

These network and installation checks are also recommended in the publisher’s PS4 guidance.

Do not initialize too early

Initialize PS4 and Reset PS5 delete user data. Their reinstall-system-software variants also remove the console’s system-software installation. Back up saves and exhaust the restart, storage test, reinstall, and Safe Mode options first. On PS5, Restore Default Settings is different: Sony says it does not delete games, applications, screenshots, video clips, or saved data.

If a clean internal-storage reinstall fails, several unrelated games fail, the console repeatedly enters storage repair, or Safe Mode operations cannot complete, stop repeatedly deleting content and use PlayStation Repairs. Replace an external drive only after confirming the problem follows that drive and backing up anything recoverable; buying storage cannot repair corrupted data or a failing console.

Disc and digital cases

Digital game

Delete only the application, sign in to the purchasing account, and download it again from the Game Library or PlayStation Store.

Disc game

After deleting the installation, insert the disc again to reinstall. Inspect the disc if only that title fails.

What not to do

  • Do not delete saved data when you intend to remove only the game.
  • Do not unplug USB storage while the console is writing to it.
  • Do not format an external drive before recovering needed data.
  • Do not assume Rebuild Database guarantees a fix.
  • Do not buy a new SSD or hard drive before testing the game on internal storage.

The Bottom Line

Start with a full restart and a storage check, then isolate the game from USB storage and reinstall only the affected application. Use PS4/PS5 Safe Mode cautiously, and reserve initialization or hardware replacement for cases that survive a clean internal-storage test or affect multiple games.
