If Microsoft Edge tabs appear as separate items in Alt + Tab, open Settings > System > Multitasking, find Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab, and select Don’t show tabs. This is a Windows setting, not an ordinary Edge browser setting.
However, Edge tabs shown under the File Explorer taskbar icon, or ghost windows that remain after changing the setting, may indicate a separate Windows Explorer or taskbar problem. Use the symptom table below to identify the right fix.
First, identify where the extra entries appear

Hide Edge tabs from Alt+Tab and snapping
On Windows 11, follow these steps:
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Multitasking.
- Find Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab.
- Select Don’t show tabs.
- Press Alt + Tab to test the change.
Windows exposes Edge tabs through its multitasking integration. Microsoft’s documented control determines whether app tabs, including recent Edge tabs, appear when using Alt+Tab or supported snapping views. Depending on the Windows build, the other choices may include three, five, or 20 recent tabs. Those options do not create new browser windows; they simply expose more recent tabs to Windows task switching.

Choose Don’t show tabs if you want one conventional Edge entry per open window. If you regularly switch directly between many browser tabs, a recent-tab option may be useful, but it will make Edge appear to contain more switchable items.
Microsoft’s Windows multitasking instructions document this setting and its behavior.
If the extra items appear only when you hover over the taskbar
A taskbar hover preview may represent a complete snapped arrangement rather than individual Edge tabs. To disable those Snap-group previews:
- Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Expand Snap windows.
- Clear Show my snapped windows when I hover over the taskbar apps, in Task View, and when I press Alt+Tab.
- Hover over the Edge and File Explorer taskbar icons again.
This setting affects previews from taskbar hover, Task View, and Alt+Tab. It is separate from the setting that controls how many Edge tabs Windows exposes.

Check virtual-desktop settings
Windows can intentionally show windows from every virtual desktop on the current taskbar. If the entries appear after switching desktops, change the taskbar scope:

- Expand Desktops.
- Under On the taskbar, show all the open windows, choose Only on the desktop I’m using.
- If Alt+Tab also shows windows from other desktops, change Show all open windows when I press Alt+Tab to the current-desktop-only option.
Showing windows on all desktops is useful when you want to reach any window immediately, but it increases taskbar and Alt+Tab clutter. Current-desktop-only display keeps each virtual desktop more isolated.

What if Edge tabs appear under File Explorer?
Windows documents Edge-tab integration for Alt+Tab and snapping, but not a normal feature that turns browser tabs into independent File Explorer taskbar windows. If Edge previews are literally shown beneath the File Explorer icon, or if incorrect entries remain after you select Don’t show tabs, treat it as a shell-rendering or taskbar-state problem rather than an ordinary Edge preference.
The interface may be misidentifying or grouping windows; that does not necessarily mean Edge tabs have become File Explorer windows. Similar misidentification was reported in historical Microsoft Edge community discussions, particularly around older Windows and Edge builds. Those reports do not prove that every current Windows 11 installation has the same bug.
1. Restart Windows Explorer
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
Your taskbar and desktop may disappear briefly while the shell refreshes. This is a recovery step, not confirmation that the underlying cause has been fixed. If Windows Explorer is not listed, choose Run new task in Task Manager, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.

2. Restart Windows
After changing the Multitasking, Snap, or desktop settings, restart Windows once. Then check the exact surface where the problem occurred: Alt+Tab, taskbar hover, Task View, or the File Explorer icon.

- Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates.
- In Edge, open
edge://settings/help. - Allow Edge to check for updates and relaunch it if prompted.
Menu wording and update behavior can vary by Edge release channel and device-management policy. Do not assume that a particular Edge version fixes this symptom unless its release notes specifically say so.
4. Temporarily remove possible shell conflicts
Temporarily disable or exit third-party taskbar customizers, Start-menu replacements, shell extensions, and similar utilities. Also test Edge with extensions disabled. These tools can affect taskbar grouping or Explorer behavior, although they are not proven to be the cause in every case.
If you use Edge Beta, Dev, or Canary, reset experimental flags to their defaults as a diagnostic step at edge://flags. Historical reports have mentioned flags such as Tab Hover Cards, but flags are version-dependent and may be renamed or removed. Do not treat an old flag-based workaround as a universal current fix.
5. Repair Windows system files
If incorrect or ghost taskbar entries continue across restarts, open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt as administrator and run:

sfc /scannowRestart Windows after the scan completes. If SFC reports that it could not repair all files, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWhen DISM finishes, run SFC again:
sfc /scannowThese are general Windows system-file repair commands. Microsoft does not describe them as an Edge-tab-specific fix.
6. Test another Windows profile
If only your account is affected, create or test a separate local Windows profile. If the taskbar behaves normally there, the original profile may contain corrupted shell state or user-specific customization. If every profile has the problem, a system-wide Windows build, shell component, or installed utility is more likely.

- Do not keep changing unrelated Edge privacy or appearance settings; the primary control is in Windows Multitasking.
- Do not immediately edit the registry or delete taskbar database files.
- Do not download third-party “taskbar repair” utilities before identifying whether the issue is Alt+Tab, Snap, virtual desktops, or Explorer.
- Do not assume an old Edge flag still exists or behaves the same way.
Registry edits and cache deletion can be disruptive and may remove customizations or create a new shell problem. Use them only with a reliable recovery plan and after the less-invasive steps above.
Is this a Windows 10 or Windows 11 issue?
The steps above target current Windows 11 installations. Windows 10 may use different menu wording and behavior. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 instructions should be treated as legacy and may not match current documentation or fixes.
The practical diagnosis
Use the location of the unwanted entries as the deciding clue:
- Only in Alt+Tab: set Edge tabs to Don’t show tabs.
- Only while hovering over a taskbar button: disable Snap-group previews.
- After changing virtual desktops: limit taskbar and Alt+Tab windows to the current desktop.
- Under File Explorer or as ghost entries: restart Explorer, update Windows and Edge, disable shell customizers, then use SFC and DISM if needed.
The first fix reduces supported Windows exposure of Edge tabs. It does not guarantee correction of an independent Explorer or taskbar rendering error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Edge tabs show in Alt+Tab?
Windows can expose recent Edge tabs through its multitasking integration. Set Settings > System > Multitasking > Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab to Don’t show tabs.
Why do Edge tabs appear under File Explorer?
That is not a documented normal way for Windows to display Edge tabs. It may be a stale taskbar or Explorer state, a shell bug, or an interaction with virtual desktops, Snap groups, or customization software.
Is this a virus?
This symptom alone is not evidence of malware. First distinguish normal Alt+Tab, Snap, and virtual-desktop behavior from incorrect Explorer rendering. Run a security scan if you also notice unrelated suspicious activity.
Do I need to reinstall Edge?
Usually not. The main control is a Windows Multitasking setting, and File Explorer misidentification is more likely to require an Explorer restart or Windows shell troubleshooting than an Edge reinstall.
