Disney+ Error Code 42 means the app or website is having trouble connecting to the internet or completing its connection to Disney+. It does not, by itself, prove that your broadband is too slow, your account is defective, or Disney+ is down. Disney lists an unstable or slow connection and weak Wi-Fi among the possible causes, and recommends relaunching Disney+ and restarting the modem and router. Disney’s Error 42 guidance

Start with the least disruptive checks: close and reopen Disney+, compare another device or network, restart the affected device, and then restart the modem and router. Those comparisons help identify whether the fault is with Disney+, your home network, or one device before you clear data or reinstall anything.

First, find out whether the problem is Disney+, your network, or one device

Before changing settings, run a quick comparison. Use another device on the same Wi-Fi, then—if practical—try the affected device on a different connection such as a phone hotspot. Check whether other streaming services work, too. An outage-reporting site can help corroborate a wider incident, but user reports are not official confirmation.

What you find Most likely area to investigate
Disney+ fails on several devices and networks A Disney+ service or regional issue, or an account-level problem. Check Disney’s Help Center and retry later.
Disney+ works on cellular data but fails on home Wi-Fi Router, ISP route, DNS, IPv6, filtering, VPN/proxy, or home-network stability.
Disney+ works on another device using the same Wi-Fi The affected device, app installation, stored app data, or device software.
Disney+ fails only in one browser Browser data, extensions, VPN, browser compatibility, or site settings.
Other streaming apps fail as well Home internet, router, ISP, or Wi-Fi rather than a Disney+-only issue.
Only one movie or episode fails A title-specific playback or availability issue may be more likely than a general connection fault.

A working browser, YouTube, or another streaming app does not completely rule out a Disney+-specific routing, DNS, app, or device issue. Likewise, a strong Wi-Fi indicator only shows the device’s wireless link to the router; it does not prove that the router has a stable route to Disney+.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Try these fixes in order

  1. Close and reopen Disney+. On a phone or tablet, open the recent-apps/app switcher and swipe Disney+ away or use the system’s force-close control. On a TV or streaming device, exit the app fully if possible, then launch it again. In a browser, close the Disney+ tab, open a new one, and visit DisneyPlus.com.
  2. Check for a service issue. Look at Disney’s Help Center and, as a secondary signal, outage reports. If reports point to a wider incident or the service fails across devices and networks, wait and retry rather than repeatedly changing local settings. Disney’s subscriber agreement notes that service can be unavailable because of maintenance, technical issues, outages, or content-delivery problems. Disney+ Subscriber Agreement
  3. Restart the affected device. Save or close other work, choose the device’s built-in Restart or Power off/restart command, let it boot fully, and then test Disney+. If it is frozen, unplug it from power for about 60 seconds before reconnecting it.
  4. Restart the modem and router. Turn off or unplug the router and, if separate, the modem or fiber gateway. Wait at least 60 seconds. Power the modem/gateway on first and wait for its service indicators to stabilize; then start the router and allow several minutes for Wi-Fi and internet access to return. This disconnects devices in the home temporarily and will not resolve an ISP outage. Disney specifically recommends power-cycling the modem and router. Disney’s Error 42 guidance
  5. Compare another network. If the device works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, focus on the router, ISP path, network filtering, or Wi-Fi. If it fails on several networks, test another device and check for a service or account issue.
  6. Update Disney+ and the device. Open the relevant app store, search for Disney+, and install an available update. Check for system updates on the TV, streaming stick, console, phone, tablet, or computer, then restart if prompted. Disney requires compatible devices and software, and compatibility can vary by device and change over time; consult its current support information rather than assuming a particular minimum version. Disney+ Subscriber Agreement
  7. Clear app or browser data if the platform allows it. Follow the platform notes below. Try this after the simpler connection checks, since clearing data can sign you out or remove local settings and downloads.
  8. Sign out and back in, then reinstall only if needed. Reinstallation can help if the app installation or stored data is damaged, but it is not guaranteed to fix a network-path problem. It can remove login state and local downloads.

Check Wi-Fi stability, not just the speed-test number

Disney identifies weak Wi-Fi and an unstable or slow internet connection as possible causes, but Error 42 does not establish that you need a faster plan. A speed test is useful, yet a good download-speed result can hide brief dropouts, packet loss, high latency, or a poor route to Disney’s service.

  • Move the TV, stick, or console closer to the router, or test with Ethernet if available.
  • If the router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks, test the other band. The better choice depends on distance, walls, interference, and the device.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, or other heavy network activity and retry.
  • Compare performance at a less congested time and on a cellular hotspot if practical.
  • On hotel, dorm, office, guest, or public Wi-Fi, check for a captive portal, bandwidth limit, firewall, or traffic filter that may interfere with streaming.

Do not use a single Mbps result as proof that the route is healthy. One secondary troubleshooting guide gives broad streaming-speed guidance, but it is not a Disney+ Error 42 threshold or an official Disney requirement. CableTV’s general Disney+ troubleshooting guide

Clear data only where your device supports it

  • Android, Google TV, or Fire TV: Look in the device settings under Apps, select Disney+, and check Storage or Cache. The labels and available controls vary by model and software.
  • Web browsers: First try a private/incognito window or another supported browser. If that works, clear site data or cookies for DisneyPlus.com and retry. Temporarily disable extensions that filter, block, or reroute traffic, such as VPN, privacy, or ad-blocking extensions.
  • iPhone or iPad: iOS generally does not provide a universal per-app cache-clear control. Offloading or deleting and reinstalling the app may be the available alternative.
  • Roku, Apple TV, many smart TVs, and consoles: A user-facing cache-clear option may not exist. Restarting the device or removing and reinstalling the app may be the platform’s practical equivalent.

General troubleshooting coverage also recommends cache clearing and reinstalling when simpler measures fail; treat these as later steps rather than the first response. CableTV’s general Disney+ troubleshooting guide

Test VPNs, proxies, and network filters conditionally

If Disney+ works on cellular data but not through a particular Wi-Fi network, temporarily turn off any VPN, proxy, smart-DNS service, corporate tunnel, parental-control filter, or security product that intercepts traffic, then retry. If the error disappears, that service or network configuration is implicated; it does not mean every VPN causes Error 42.

Disney’s subscriber agreement prohibits using technology to obscure or disguise location when accessing the service. Do not use a VPN or similar tool to evade location restrictions. Disney+ Subscriber Agreement

Advanced network checks: DNS and IPv6

Consider these only when Error 42 is isolated to one network and the ordinary app, device, and router steps have not helped. Disney’s official Error 42 guidance does not direct users to change DNS or disable IPv6; these are diagnostic possibilities, not established universal fixes.

  1. Restart the router first, then retry with its existing settings.
  2. If you recently set a custom DNS server, restore DNS to automatic and test again.
  3. If you understand the router or device network controls, you may temporarily test a reputable public DNS provider. Do not change settings you cannot restore.
  4. As a temporary diagnostic experiment only, test with IPv6 disabled if the problem is limited to that network. Record the original setting and restore it if there is no improvement.

Router settings differ, and a DNS or IPv6 change can affect the whole household, including parental controls and smart-home devices. A secondary troubleshooting article discusses these as possible causes, but it is not an official Disney technical bulletin. KeepStreams’ discussion of Error 42

When the message may point to a different problem

  • One title fails while others play: Retry another title and check whether the problem is title-specific or related to availability in your location. Disney notes that access to content can vary by location, rights, device, and service tier. Disney+ Subscriber Agreement
  • You cannot sign in at all: Treat a sign-in or password message as a separate account-access issue. Error 42 is not primarily a password or billing code, so a password reset or subscription change is not a sensible first fix unless support identifies an account problem.
  • The app reports device compatibility or instability: Check supported-device and software information; Error 83 is commonly discussed in connection with compatibility or instability, but error codes are not a complete official diagnostic taxonomy. CableTV’s general Disney+ troubleshooting guide
  • The issue happens only with downloads: Use Disney’s separate download troubleshooting guidance rather than treating an offline-download error as ordinary streaming Error 42. Disney+ download troubleshooting

When to contact Disney+ or your ISP

Contact Disney+ support if Error 42 continues after comparisons across devices and networks, if the service appears unavailable across your household while other services work, or if you suspect a regional or account-level problem. Tell support the device and app/browser involved, when the error began, whether other titles work, and the results of the same-Wi-Fi and alternate-network tests.

Contact your ISP or router provider when multiple services or devices have connection problems, or when Disney+ consistently works on cellular data but not on the home connection after a router restart. Do not upgrade your internet plan or buy new hardware until tests indicate a speed, coverage, or equipment problem.
