If DISM reports “DISM does not support servicing Windows PE with the /Online option,” it is usually targeting the wrong Windows environment—not proof that your Windows 10 installation is beyond repair. In normal Windows, use /Online. From WinRE or WinPE, point DISM at the installed Windows folder with /Image: and the correct drive letter.
Why DISM Error 50 happens
/Online tells DISM to service the operating system that is currently running. In ordinary Windows, that is your Windows 10 installation. But when Command Prompt is opened from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), a recovery drive, or Windows installation media, the running system is the recovery or preinstallation environment. DISM can then return Error 50 because it does not support servicing Windows PE with /Online.
For an offline Windows installation, use /Image:<path> instead. Microsoft documents the distinction between DISM’s /Online and /Image: options.
Error 50 is not a universal diagnosis for every DISM failure. Compare the full error text, and check where the command prompt is running. If you see the ordinary desktop, Start menu, and taskbar, you are likely in normal Windows. If you opened Command Prompt through Troubleshoot > Advanced options, Automatic Repair, or a Windows recovery/install USB, you are in a recovery environment. A prompt beginning with X:WindowsSystem32 is another common sign of WinRE; X: is typically the temporary recovery environment, not the installed Windows partition.

If Windows 10 starts normally
Open an elevated Command Prompt: open Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Then run the repair sequence:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow/CheckHealth quickly reports whether the image has already been flagged as corrupted. /ScanHealth performs a more thorough scan; it can take longer. /RestoreHealth is the repair operation. After it completes, run SFC to check and repair protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because SFC may rely on a healthy component store; see its DISM and System File Checker instructions.
Allow the operation to finish; it may take several minutes. Do not close the window or shut down while it is working. If DISM succeeds, restart if appropriate and run sfc /scannow if you have not already done so.
If you are in WinRE or WinPE
Do not use /Online to repair the installed copy of Windows from this prompt. First identify the Windows partition. Recovery environments can assign different drive letters than normal Windows, so do not assume it is C:.
1. Find the installed Windows drive
At the recovery Command Prompt, run:
bcdedit | find "osdevice"For example, if the output says partition=E:, check that drive:

dir E:WindowsYou should see the installed Windows directory and normally folders such as System32, WinSxS, and Servicing. If the command does not give a useful result, try likely letters:
dir C:Windows
dir D:Windows
dir E:WindowsUse the letter that contains the actual Windows installation. The E: examples below are placeholders, not a universal answer.

2. Create a scratch directory and repair the offline image
Choose a writable drive with free space. If Windows is on E:, create a temporary working folder and run DISM against that installation:
md E:Temp
dism /Image:E: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /ScratchDir:E:TempThe trailing slash in /Image:E: identifies the root of the offline Windows image. The scratch directory gives DISM a place for temporary working files; it must be on an accessible drive with adequate free space.
3. Run SFC against the offline Windows installation
After DISM completes, run offline SFC using the same verified drive letter:

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=E: /offwindir=E:WindowsDo not substitute plain sfc /scannow at a WinRE prompt if your goal is to check the installed Windows copy: without offline paths, SFC may target the running recovery environment. Microsoft Q&A describes this offline SFC pattern and the need to identify the Windows partition in recovery mode.

For an online repair, DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable or damaged, provide a known-good source using /Source; /LimitAccess tells DISM not to contact Windows Update.
For example, if C:RepairSourceWindows is a suitable Windows directory:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessFor an offline installation on E:, a source directory on D: could be specified like this:
dism /Image:E: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:D:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessDo not point DISM at an arbitrary Windows folder. The source should be compatible with the target, particularly in Windows version/build, architecture (such as x64), language, and edition (such as Home or Pro). Microsoft’s guidance on repairing component corruption and using a repair source warns that source compatibility matters.

Windows installation media may store its image as install.wim or install.esd, rather than as a ready-to-use Windows folder. For a WIM, inspect its available editions and indexes first:
dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:D:sourcesinstall.wimThen use the index that matches the target edition. For example, only if the matching edition is index 6, an offline repair could use:
dism /Image:E: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:sourcesinstall.wim:6 /LimitAccessIndex 6 is an illustration, not a default. Check the actual media and its index; syntax and source handling can differ for ESD media. Do not assume a Windows 11 image or a different-language or different-architecture image is an appropriate Windows 10 repair source.

- Wrong target drive: Recheck
bcdedit | find "osdevice"and confirm the candidate withdir <letter>:Windows. A wrong letter can make DISM or offline SFC target the wrong volume or report that files are missing. - Insufficient scratch space or an unwritable drive: Put
/ScratchDiron a writable volume with free space. If necessary, use another accessible drive and update the path. - Source files unavailable: Verify that the source path exists and that its edition, language, architecture, and build are suitable. For WIM media, inspect the index rather than guessing.
- A pending reboot or update: If Windows can start, restart normally to finish pending servicing work, then retry the repair. Do not use
/RevertPendingActionsas a general-purpose Error 50 fix; Microsoft documents that it is not supported against a running OS or a Windows PE/Windows RE image. - Disk or file-system trouble: Repeated read/write errors, disappearing partitions, a volume becoming read-only, very slow access, or SMART warnings point beyond an environment mismatch. Back up important data before repeatedly running repairs.
- Windows still will not boot after DISM succeeds: DISM repairs the component store; it does not repair every bootloader, driver, disk, or hardware problem. Use the relevant recovery options and preserve data before considering reset or reinstallation.
If SFC says “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations,” it found no protected-file integrity problems. If it says it repaired corrupt files, restart and check whether the issue is resolved. If it found files it could not fix, or could not perform the requested operation, confirm that it targeted the correct Windows installation and review the logs.

In normal Windows, DISM writes its log to %windir%LogsDISMdism.log, and SFC details are recorded in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. These can help identify a source, servicing, or file-repair failure.

In WinRE, %windir% may refer to the temporary recovery environment, not the Windows installation you targeted. If the installed system is on E:, inspect its logs at E:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log and E:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Microsoft’s servicing troubleshooting guidance also points to these logs for more detail.
When to stop and protect your data
Error 50 by itself does not indicate a failing drive. But if you also see repeated read/write errors, a missing or unstable partition, unusually slow disk access, or drive-health warnings, prioritize copying important files or seeking data-recovery help before running repeated repair operations. DISM and SFC can address some Windows image and protected-file problems; neither is a substitute for recovering data from failing hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will DISM Error 50 delete my personal files?
The commands described here are servicing and system-file repair operations, not a reset or reinstallation. Still, back up important data first if the drive shows signs of failure or the files are irreplaceable.

WinRE assigns letters to volumes independently of the usual Windows session. Identify the installation with `bcdedit | find “osdevice”` and confirm it with `dir
Can I use a Windows 11 ISO to repair Windows 10?
Do not assume it is a suitable repair source. Use installation media or a source compatible with the target Windows version/build, architecture, language, and edition.
What if DISM appears stuck at a percentage?
A percentage that does not change for a while does not by itself establish failure; servicing can take time. Allow it to finish, and if it ultimately returns an error, use that exact message and the DISM log to diagnose the source or target.
Does DISM success guarantee Windows will boot?
No. `/RestoreHealth` repairs the component store, not every boot, driver, disk, or hardware problem. If Windows still fails to start, use recovery options and protect your data before reset or reinstallation.
