DISM Error 2 means Windows could not find a file, path, repair source, or component-store payload required by the repair operation. It does not necessarily mean that dism.exe is missing. Start with the standard repair command in an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthIf it fails again, stop repeating the same command. Check Windows Update, then provide a matching Windows 10 installation source and verify its image index, edition, architecture, language, and build.
What DISM Error 2 means
Error 2 is a file-not-found condition. It may appear as “The system cannot find the file specified” and can correspond to Windows error 0x80070002, which represents ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND. In a DISM repair, the missing item might be a source path, install.wim, install.esd, image index, package, or component-store file.

Common causes include:
- An incorrect
/Sourcepath or drive letter. - A missing or incorrectly named
install.wimorinstall.esd. - An incorrect image index.
- Windows Update being unable to provide repair files.
- Installation media from the wrong Windows release, edition, architecture, or language.
- An inaccessible network share or disconnected USB drive.
- Local component-store corruption or pending servicing operations.
0x800f081f is related but not identical: it specifically means that the source files could not be found. Both errors generally require validating the repair source.

Microsoft documents the error-code context and source requirements in its Windows Update repair guidance.
Before you begin
- Back up important documents and other data.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator: search for
cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. - Connect the PC to power and do not close the window or interrupt DISM while it is working.
- Keep an internet connection available if you plan to use Windows Update as the source.
Record your Windows 10 details
Press Windows + R, enter winver, and note the Windows 10 version and build. Also run:
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEditionNote the edition, such as Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education; whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit; the display language; and the full build number. A repair source should match these details as closely as possible. Do not use Windows 11 media to repair Windows 10.
1. Check the image, then run the standard repair
In the elevated Command Prompt, run the quick check:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthThen run the deeper scan:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthCheckHealth quickly checks whether corruption has been recorded. ScanHealth performs a more extensive examination. If DISM says the component store is repairable, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth/Online targets the currently running Windows installation, while /Cleanup-Image and /RestoreHealth inspect and repair its component store. By default, DISM may use Windows Update to obtain replacement files.

A successful operation usually ends with:
The restore operation completed successfully.or:
The operation completed successfully.If the image is reported as non-repairable, do not run /RestoreHealth indefinitely. Move to a matched installation source or an in-place repair installation.

2. Check Windows Update
Restart Windows first, install pending updates if Windows Update is working, confirm internet access, and retry the standard command. If Windows Update is also failing, its cache may be damaged.
In an elevated Command Prompt, run these commands carefully:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauservRestart the computer and retry:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthRenaming these folders makes Windows recreate its update cache. It can help when Windows Update is the broken repair path, but it does not repair every type of component-store corruption. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide documents this procedure.
3. Use a Windows 10 ISO, USB, DVD, or network source
When Windows Update cannot supply the files, use official installation media or a known-good repair source. The source must match the installed Windows 10 edition and architecture, and should match the release, language, and build family as closely as possible.

dir D:sourcesLook for either install.wim or install.esd. Do not assume the media uses WIM; use the command matching the file you actually find.
Find the correct image index
For a WIM file:
DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:D:sourcesinstall.wimFor an ESD file:
DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:D:sourcesinstall.esdThe output lists indexes and editions. Select the index that matches your installed edition. Index 1 is not universally Windows 10 Pro.
Repair from an install.wim source
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:D:sourcesinstall.wim:INDEX /LimitAccessRepair from an install.esd source
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:ESD:D:sourcesinstall.esd:INDEX /LimitAccessReplace INDEX with the correct number. /Source tells DISM where to find repair files; /LimitAccess prevents it from falling back to Windows Update.
You can also use a complete repair-source folder:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessOr an approved network source:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\ComputerNamec$Windows /LimitAccessA network source should come from a computer running the same operating-system version. Managed PCs may also have policies that restrict repair sources; contact IT rather than bypassing those policies.
Check these five things before retrying

| Compatibility | Match Windows 10 edition, architecture, language, release, and build as closely as possible. |
4. Run SFC after DISM succeeds
Once DISM completes successfully, run the System File Checker:
sfc /scannowWait for verification to reach 100 percent. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because SFC relies on the component store for replacement files. Results mean:

- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected-file corruption was found.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and retest the original problem.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: inspect
CBS.logand consider an in-place repair. - Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: retry in Safe Mode or continue with deeper servicing repair.

5. Inspect DISM and CBS logs
If a valid source still fails, inspect:
C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.logFor a shorter SFC report on the desktop, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"Look for the exact missing filename, package name, path, error code, and the point at which the operation fails. These details help distinguish an incorrect path from an inaccessible share, source mismatch, or missing component package.
If the log identifies a specific package, use official Windows media or the Microsoft Update Catalog, matching the Windows build and architecture. Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial websites.
When to use an in-place repair installation
If the standard repair, Windows Update troubleshooting, a correctly matched ISO source, SFC, and log review do not resolve the problem, use an official Windows 10 installation source for an in-place repair installation. Start setup.exe from within Windows and choose the option to keep personal files and applications. Back up first; preservation is an intended option, not an absolute guarantee.
An in-place repair is different from Startup Repair, System Restore, Reset this PC, and a clean installation. Reset may remove applications and settings. A clean installation can erase the Windows installation and is destructive without a separate backup. If Windows cannot boot reliably, use the appropriate recovery environment option instead of assuming an in-place upgrade will work.
