The fastest way to find the cause is to check Discord’s status, try the same call over a phone hotspot, then remove VPN, firewall, and network restrictions before changing app settings. These messages do not by themselves prove that Discord is down.
What the two messages mean
“RTC Connecting”
Discord is attempting to establish its real-time voice session but has not completed the connection process.
“No Route”
Discord cannot find or maintain a usable network path to the selected voice server. Voice data uses UDP, so websites and text chat can work while a firewall, router, VPN, NAT device, or managed network blocks voice traffic. See Discord’s voice-connection documentation.
Discord groups both messages with connection interference. “Waiting for Voice Server” is the state more associated with a possible broad service problem, so do not assume an outage from “No Route” alone. Discord’s guidance is summarized in its Voice Connection Errors article.

Fastest diagnosis: follow this order
- Check service status: Visit Discord Status. If it reports a voice or regional incident, wait and monitor it instead of making destructive local changes. An “operational” page does not prove your own route is healthy.
- Restart the session: Quit Discord completely, restart the computer, reboot the modem/router, and try again.
- Run a hotspot test: Connect the computer to a phone hotspot and join the same channel. If it works, the original Wi-Fi, router, ISP, VPN, DNS, or managed network is the likely fault. If it fails there too, investigate the device, app, account/server state, or Discord itself.
- Compare clients: Try Discord in a supported browser. Browser success with desktop failure points toward the desktop installation, cache, or an app-specific security rule.
- Check scope: One server suggests a channel or voice-region issue; every server suggests a device or network-wide problem.
Restart Discord and your network
Discord recommends restarting the computer and network equipment. Quit Discord; on Windows, open Task Manager and end any remaining Discord processes. Restart the computer, unplug the modem and router for about 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait for internet access, and retry the call. This can clear temporary NAT or router state, but it is not a guaranteed repair.
Remove VPN, proxy, and traffic-filter interference
Temporarily disconnect VPN software, system or browser proxies, gaming network optimizers, security-suite network shields, DNS filters, parental-control apps, and corporate tunnels. Discord states that a VPN must support UDP for voice to work (official guidance).
If Discord works only while a VPN is connected, that indicates the normal route may be filtering or mishandling UDP; it does not make a VPN the correct permanent fix. A VPN can also add latency or packet loss. School and workplace users should ask IT to permit voice traffic rather than bypass policy.

Check firewall and antivirus permissions safely
- Open your operating system’s firewall settings and confirm Discord is allowed on the network profile you use.
- For diagnosis only, briefly pause third-party antivirus or firewall protection and retry.
- Re-enable protection immediately. If the test identifies the security product, create a narrow allow rule for Discord instead of leaving protection disabled.
Do not disable Windows Firewall permanently, allow all inbound traffic, or install a random “Discord firewall fix.” Managed computers may prevent you from changing these settings. Discord recommends allowlisting the app or temporarily disabling interference for testing (support instructions).

Change the voice region when one server is affected
If you administer the server, open the affected voice channel’s settings, choose Overview, find Region Override, select another available region, save, leave the channel, and rejoin. Discord also permits region changes for private voice calls.
Ordinary members may not have this permission. Treat the change as a diagnostic workaround, not a guaranteed permanent solution; repeatedly changing regions is unlikely to help when every server fails. Discord’s voice infrastructure is evolving, so avoid assuming that old articles accurately describe fixed server geography; see Discord’s voice-infrastructure explanation.

Windows network repairs (advanced)
Reset Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS
Use this after the basic tests. These commands apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator.
- Run each command in order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns- Restart Windows and test Discord.
netsh winsock resetresets the Winsock catalog used by applications.netsh int ip resetresets TCP/IP configuration.ipconfig /releaseand/renewrequest a fresh DHCP address.ipconfig /flushdnsclears cached DNS results.
DNS flushing can help stale name resolution, but it cannot repair a blocked firewall rule or a network that filters UDP. Microsoft documents this sequence at its Windows connectivity guide.
Use Windows Network reset only as a last resort
On Windows 11 go to Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset. On Windows 10 go to Settings → Network & internet → Status → Network reset. Select Reset now, confirm, and restart.

Microsoft warns that Network reset removes network adapters and settings. VPN clients, Hyper-V virtual switches, and other networking software may need to be reinstalled or configured again. See Microsoft’s Network reset guidance.

- Try Discord in a supported browser, then sign out and back in.
- Update the desktop app.
- If only the desktop app fails, clear its cache or reinstall it from Discord’s official download source.
Discord lists these cache locations in its Troubleshooting Guide:
Windows: %appdata%discordCache
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/discord/CacheDeleting cache may remove local cached data or logged-in sessions. It cannot fix blocked UDP traffic; if both browser and desktop fail on the same network, reinstalling is unlikely to address the root cause.

Mobile-specific checks
- Force-close Discord and update it through the official app store.
- Turn off the phone’s VPN and verify microphone and mobile-data permissions.
- Compare Wi-Fi with cellular data. Cellular success points to the Wi-Fi router or policy; Wi-Fi success with cellular failure points to carrier, device, or VPN settings.
Menu names vary by Android edition, iOS version, and manufacturer.

When IT or your ISP must act
Escalate when a hotspot works but the home, school, office, hotel, or public network does not; multiple devices share the failure; firewall logs show denied Discord traffic; or voice works only through a VPN. Ask the administrator to check whether Discord is blocked, whether outbound and return UDP are filtered, and whether proxy, VPN, content-filter, NAT, or application-control settings interfere.
Discord’s documentation confirms UDP is required, but it does not establish one universal port-forwarding rule for every network. Do not blindly forward ports. Managed networks may intentionally block Discord, making permission—not another local tweak—the proper resolution.
Contact Discord Support with useful evidence
If the issue persists across networks and clients, collect evidence before opening a ticket. Discord’s instructions say to use a PTB or Canary client, join the affected call, open Developer Tools, select Console, and capture the full page including errors. Shortcuts are Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows and Option+Command+I on macOS. Follow the official instructions and submit through Discord Support.
