“DHCP Lookup Failed” means your Chromebook connected to the Wi-Fi signal but could not obtain the IP address and other network settings needed to use the connection. The router, modem-router, mesh system, extender, captive portal, or network policy is often responsible—not necessarily the Chromebook.
The fastest way to identify the cause is to connect the Chromebook to another network, such as a phone hotspot. If it works there, troubleshoot the original Wi-Fi network. If it fails everywhere, focus on ChromeOS, the Chromebook’s Wi-Fi hardware, or a school/work management policy.
What “DHCP Lookup Failed” means
DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, assigns a device an IP address and supplies related settings such as the network gateway. Without that information, the Chromebook may see and associate with a Wi-Fi network but cannot reliably reach the internet.
This is different from a DNS error. DNS translates a website name such as example.com into an IP address after the device already has network connectivity. Changing DNS servers will not normally fix a Chromebook that cannot obtain a DHCP lease. Use Google’s DNS troubleshooting steps only when the actual error is DNS-related.

ChromeOS treats DHCP and DNS failures as separate network errors, as shown in Chromium’s ChromeOS network error strings.
First determine whether the Chromebook or Wi-Fi network is at fault
Do this before resetting the Chromebook or changing advanced settings.
- Connect the Chromebook to a phone hotspot or another trusted Wi-Fi network.
- Test another device on the affected Wi-Fi network.
- If you use mesh Wi-Fi or an extender, test close to the main router and, if possible, with the satellite or booster temporarily turned off.
- If the router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try both.

Other devices working does not prove that the router is healthy. They may have existing DHCP leases, be connected to another mesh node or band, support a different security mode, or already be allowlisted.
Quick fixes that do not erase your data
1. Toggle Wi-Fi and restart the Chromebook
- Select the time in the lower-right corner.
- Turn Wi-Fi off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again.
- Restart the Chromebook.
Google lists re-enabling Wi-Fi and restarting as basic connection troubleshooting steps in its ChromeOS network guidance.
2. Forget and re-add the Wi-Fi network
A damaged or outdated saved profile can prevent a successful connection. Forgetting a network removes that saved Wi-Fi information; it does not erase the Chromebook.
- Open Settings.
- Select Network, then Wi-Fi.
- Open Known networks.
- Select the affected network’s More menu.
- Choose Forget.
- Join the network again and enter its password.
Menu names can vary slightly by ChromeOS version, device model, and administrator policy. Google documents this process in its guide to managing saved networks.
3. Restart the complete network path
Perform a normal power cycle, not a factory reset:
- Shut down or restart the Chromebook.
- Restart the Wi-Fi extender or mesh satellite, if you have one.
- Restart the router.
- Restart the modem or fiber gateway.
Wait until the modem and router show that service has returned, then try the Chromebook again. A restart preserves the router’s settings. A factory reset erases them and may require you to reconfigure the Wi-Fi name, password, ISP credentials, and mesh devices.

An overlooked or malfunctioning booster can cause a DHCP failure that appears to affect only one device. A Google Chromebook Community report describes this type of situation; treat it as an anecdotal troubleshooting lead rather than a universal diagnosis.
4. Move close to the router and try another band
Test next to the main router to eliminate weak signal and roaming as variables. If separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks are available, try the other one. Change one setting at a time so you know which change mattered.
Older or specialized Chromebook hardware may have Wi-Fi compatibility limitations. Google specifically documents that ChromeOS devices using certain Marvell Wi-Fi chipsets do not support WPA3. This does not mean that all Chromebooks lack WPA3 support; check the device and router documentation before changing security settings.
5. Complete a captive-portal login
Hotel, airport, café, library, apartment, and some school networks may require terms-and-conditions approval or a browser sign-in. That usually produces a portal or restricted-access problem rather than a pure DHCP failure, but public networks can combine address assignment, authentication, and redirect issues.

- Open
http://example.com, rather than only an HTTPS website. - Complete the sign-in or agreement page.
- If the page does not appear, try an Incognito window if permitted.
- Temporarily disable extensions if the device allows it.
- Disconnect and reconnect after signing in.

Run ChromeOS Diagnostics
Diagnostics will not repair a broken router DHCP service, but it can show whether the Chromebook received an IP address and gateway and can provide useful evidence for support.
- Select the time.
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Select Diagnostics.
- Open the Connectivity section.
Google documents Diagnostics for ChromeOS version 90 and later. It can test Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular connectivity, and Google Services connectivity, and display IP information. Review or save the test details, especially:

- Whether an IPv4 address appears.
- Whether a gateway appears.
- Whether the network name and signal are visible.
- Whether the issue affects Wi-Fi only or Ethernet as well.
- Any diagnostic error text.

If the Chromebook works elsewhere, fix the network
If a hotspot works but the original Wi-Fi does not, stop treating this primarily as a Chromebook problem. Router administration generally requires the administrator password.
Confirm that DHCP is enabled
In the router’s administration interface, look for labels such as DHCP Server, LAN DHCP, IPv4 Address Distribution, Network Settings, or Local Network. The exact path differs by manufacturer.
Check that:
- The DHCP server is enabled.
- The address pool is not exhausted.
- The pool belongs to the same subnet as the router’s LAN.
- The router has not reached a client limit.
- No second device is also distributing DHCP addresses.
Look for duplicate routers or DHCP servers
Duplicate network services are common after installing a new ISP gateway, router, mesh kit, or extender. Possible causes include a modem/router and separate router both operating in router mode, a mesh system connected incorrectly, or a second router connected in the wrong LAN-to-LAN or LAN-to-WAN configuration.
Identify which device is actually acting as the router and DHCP server. If the network was recently upgraded, check the installation guide or ask the ISP or equipment manufacturer before changing operating modes.

Some networks allow only registered devices. Confirm that the router’s allowlist contains the current Wi-Fi MAC address shown by the Chromebook, not an old address copied from a previous setup. ChromeOS displays network information, including MAC and IP details, from the Wi-Fi network information panel. Google also documents administrator controls for restricted networks in its network management guidance.
Privacy or MAC-randomization features can make a router treat a device differently from a previously registered address. Do not assume that an old router entry matches the address currently shown by the Chromebook.

Inspect mesh nodes and extenders
Temporarily turn off satellites and boosters, connect close to the primary router, and test the primary SSID. If the Chromebook works only when a particular node is disabled, restart or reconfigure that node and check the manufacturer’s firmware and DHCP guidance.
Check Wi-Fi security and bands
Try another band if available. For diagnosis, an administrator may temporarily test a simple WPA2-compatible network, but avoid weakening a production network permanently. Google’s chipset-specific WPA3 limitation is described in its Chrome Enterprise network documentation.

School, work, and managed networks
A school or work Chromebook may need a certificate, a particular EAP/802.1X configuration, an approved SSID, administrator allowlisting, or a device policy. A network can also restrict ChromeOS hostnames or require the device to remain enrolled.
Contact the administrator instead of removing certificates, enabling Developer Mode, or Powerwashing the device. Google advises administrators to verify hostname allowlisting when Chrome devices alone cannot connect after ordinary troubleshooting. Its enterprise network documentation also covers DHCP reservations, network policies, and synchronized Wi-Fi settings.
IPv6 is an administrator-level compatibility consideration, not a normal home-user fix. ChromeOS uses SLAAC for IPv6 and does not support DHCPv6 in the same way some networks expect, according to Google’s ChromeOS IPv6 documentation. Do not change IPv6 settings just because this message appears.

Google documents this path in its ChromeOS update instructions. There is no established universal ChromeOS version bug behind this message, so do not roll back or switch update channels as a routine fix.

Try a hardware reset only if it fails on multiple networks
If the Chromebook fails on several known-good networks after the earlier steps, a hardware reset is a reasonable intermediate step. For most Chromebook laptops:
- Turn off the Chromebook.
- Press and hold Refresh.
- Tap Power.
- Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
The procedure differs for some tablets and older devices. A hard reset can affect files in the Downloads folder, so follow Google’s hardware reset instructions and back up important local files first.
Powerwash is a last resort
Powerwash can remove a corrupted local profile or network configuration, but it cannot repair an exhausted router DHCP pool, a disabled router DHCP service, a duplicate DHCP server, a defective extender, MAC filtering, a captive portal, or a school certificate problem. If the Chromebook works on other networks, Powerwash is usually the wrong first move.
Powerwash erases local user data, including files in Downloads. It does not erase files already stored in Google Drive or external storage. Back up local files before continuing.
- Sign out of the Chromebook.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.
- Select Restart.
- Select Powerwash.
- Select Continue.
- Complete setup again.
Follow Google’s Powerwash instructions. A work- or school-managed Chromebook may require an administrator to approve or complete the reset.
When recovery or repair is appropriate
ChromeOS recovery reinstalls the operating system and is more destructive than Powerwash. It can permanently erase the Chromebook’s internal drive, so back up data and exhaust less invasive troubleshooting first. See Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.
Contact the administrator, manufacturer, or repair service when:
- The Chromebook fails to connect to every known-good network.
- Diagnostics reports a connectivity or hardware problem.
- Available Wi-Fi networks disappear entirely.
- A USB Ethernet adapter works but the internal Wi-Fi does not.
- The problem began after liquid exposure, a drop, or other physical damage.
- Powerwash or recovery does not change the behavior.
For a final diagnosis, provide support with the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, networks tested, Diagnostics results, whether other devices connect, and whether the failure occurs near the main router or only through a mesh node.
Avoid these common wrong turns
- Changing DNS too early: DNS is downstream from DHCP and is relevant only when the Chromebook already has network connectivity.
- Assuming the router is fine because phones work: phones may have valid leases, use a different band, or be allowlisted.
- Factory-resetting the router immediately: restart it first; a factory reset erases configuration.
- Installing unsupported Crosh commands or enabling Developer Mode: Google’s ordinary guidance uses Settings, Diagnostics, updates, and support instead.
- Powerwashing a managed Chromebook without permission: contact the school or workplace administrator.
Useful built-in destinations include chrome://settings/ for Settings and chrome://network-errors/ for Chrome network error information. ChromeOS does not provide a universal, ordinary-user “reset DHCP” command that should be used for this problem.
